Caught parts of it........two amazingly talented individuals who would have been HOF players had they not let substance abuse overtake their lives.

There was an old book called Highpockets by John R. Tunis. Highpockets was a super talented outfielder who only cared about his own stats. Never was a team player. After a game where his home town celebrates him as a player and gives him a car, he hits a kid who is severely injured. The accident changes Highpockets and he becomes a team player.

When Daryl Strawberry came into the league, my connection was always Strawberry with Highpockets.

Next CBA negotiation they should shut it down for as long as it takes until the union agrees to non guaranteed contracts. Like the NFL system. You perform or you get cut. Blow it up. I don't care if they shut down MLB for three years. I'll watch the Saints.

Guaranteed money is becoming more and more common in new NFL contracts. Von Miller's offer from the Broncos calls for 70 million in guaranteed money....he has yet to sign.

As long as the owners continue to make as much as they do, as long as fans continue to go the park and watch / listen to broadcasts, the money won't change in baseball.

If players take a cut in the next CBA, then I would hope we see an end to public financing of ballparks. The owners will have enough money to pay for their own damn stadiums. And get the owners to pony up money to pay the infrastructure costs of roads etc. when ballparks are built.

I will never say the players don't deserve the money as long as the fat cat owners are likewise sitting on the pile of money they presently have.

I'm all for owners being forced to spend just as much money on salaries as they are now, just no more guaranteed contracts. Or else no more than three years. The years are always more devastating than the money.

I would be fine with a cap on the number of guaranteed years for a contract. No guaranteed contracts beyond 4 years.

I'll give a guy a seven year deal, but years 4-7 are all team options.
And there will be no such thing as a "no trade" clause either. I'm gving you a shit-ton of money, and a nice long contract, you will accept the risk of being traded.

Caught about half of it as I was struggling for sleep last night. As a baseball card collector in the mid to late 80s, I was very familiar with the stars of the show. Great memories for me. Maybe not so great for Doc and Straw. I once traded away my Doc Gooden rookie card for a Jerry Rice 2nd year card. I remember the day I did it. Probably the biggest decision I had made in my life at that point, and I'm dead serious. That turned out pretty well for me. Still need to cash in though.

Pretty amazing, really, in this day of "everyones fighting to be .500"

Unfamiliar territory for Bronx Bombers

The Yankees dropped to 44-45 with Friday night's 5-3 loss to the Red Sox. Elias Sports Bureau reports this is the first time that the Yanks have been below .500 after the All-Star break since September 1995.

This is pretty awesome ...

The Pirates, in DC to play the Nationals, are holding their fourth annual Fathers Weekend. In all, 18 dads (including Lorenzo McCutchen, Vince Harrison, and Mark Cole) made the trip, which features tickets for all three games, '79 throwback jerseys, and - as is always the case with family - a little bit of dysfunction. "It's like revisiting Little League but backwards," says skipper Clint Hurdle, whose 82-year dad (Clint Sr.) is on the trip, "Because now we've got to follow our fathers around and make sure they don't leave stuff behind."

With the collective bargaining agreement set to expire in December and negotiations for a new CBA underway, officials from Major League Baseball and the players’ union are discussing the length of the regular-season schedule, reports David Lennon of Newsday. Specifically, the idea of streamlining from 162 to 154 games is picking up steam, per Lennon, as it would be less taxing on the players than the current format. The American League previously switched from a 154-game schedule to 162 in 1961, while the National League followed suit in 1962.

Less games, less pay

The Houston Astros signed 32-year-old Cuban defector Yulieski Gurriel to a five-year, $47.5 million contract on Saturday, bringing one of the biggest stars of 21st century international baseball into their organization just in time for the pennant races. There’s just one problem. They might not have anywhere to play him.

5 years 9 mill/year for a 32 year old infielder.

This summer's edition of the National Baseball Congress World Series, a tournament mostly for college baseball players, will include one team made up almost entirely of ex-MLB players, including 53-year-old Roger Clemens.

Of the 25 members of the Kansas Stars, 24 are former big leaguers, including Adam LaRoche and ex-Marlins pitchers Brad Penny and Josh Beckett, according to The Wichita Eagle. The outlier is Clemens' son Koby.

The team was organized by LaRoche and Nate Robertson, a former Detroit Tigers pitcher.

"I put out a feeler, a text message, and I was blown away at the response," LaRoche told The Wichita Eagle. "And I mean, right away, guys responding and were really excited about it, wanting more and more information. I think something about being out of the game, whether it's for a couple months or a couple years, not having that competition is what guys so excited to get back out and play the game."

LaRoche abruptly retired this offseason after the Chicago White Sox attempted to limit the time his son was spending in the clubhouse.

This influx of talent into the league means the Seattle Studs, the defending NBC World Series champs, have officially been put on notice.
