Piazza was a great hitter that happened to play catcher.

He wasn't particularly good at it.

I am willing to bet his pitch-framing was substandard...

But man could that guy rake.

After months of being linked to power left-handed arms for the bullpen, the Cubs have landed the hardest-throwing pitcher in the game, reportedly agreeing to acquire Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees in exchange for four players, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports (via Twitter). Shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres will head to the Yankees as the centerpiece of the deal, and the Yankees will also be reunited with right-hander Adam Warren, who is being included as part of the return for Chapman as well. Additionally, the Yankees will land top outfield prospect and former first-round pick Billy McKinney.

Since 2010, Aroldis Chapman has 1,513 pitches at 100 MPH or faster, more than next 18 pitchers on list COMBINED.

That seems to suggest either or both that there wasn’t a huge amount of appetite on the market to carry Upton’s salary and that both clubs put a fairly high value on the rights to the high-ceiling Rodriguez.

7:11am: The Blue Jays have officially struck a deal to acquire outfielder Melvin Upton from the Padres. Young righty Hansel Rodriguez constitutes the return to San Diego, along with undisclosed cash considerations.

Tommy Stokke of FanRag Sports broke the news that Sale "cut the jerseys up so no one could wear them," and the White Sox announced a five-day suspension for the pitcher Sunday.

Sale made his first public comments about the incident Monday, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com:

When I saw that there was something in the way of that 100 percent winning mentality, I had an issue. I tried to bring it up and say, 'Hey listen, these are my thoughts and concerns,' and they got pushed away because of the business deal that was set in place. I'll never understand why we need to do something on the business side on the field that might impede us winning a game.

[The '76 uniforms] are uncomfortable and unorthodox. I didn't want to go out there and not be at the top of my game in every aspect that I need to be in. Not only that, but I didn't want anything to alter my mechanics. ... There's a lot of different things that went into it. Looking bad had absolutely zero to do with it. Nothing.

Merkin noted Sale was told about the decision to wear the 1976 throwbacks the day before his scheduled start against the Detroit Tigers. Sale reportedly told the clubhouse manager and pitching coach Don Cooper he would rather wear the 1983 jerseys, and he discussed the issue again with Cooper and manager Robin Ventura on Saturday.

Sale then reportedly cut up the jerseys when "he did not get the answer he wanted," per Merkin. The left-hander issued perhaps his most telling quote Monday when discussing his manager, suggesting Ventura did not seem to have his back, per Merkin:

Robin is the one who has to fight for us in that department. If the players don't feel comfortable 100 percent about what we are doing to win the game, and we have an easy fix -- it was as easy as hanging up another jersey and everyone was fine. For them to put business first over winning, that's when I lost it.

It's understandable for a player to put winning over the business side of baseball, even if the throwbacks are fan favorites and may encourage more people to come to the ballpark or watch a game.

But Sale has had a few issues with management this season. In spring training, he said executive vice president Ken Williams lied to him and his teammates following Adam LaRoche's retirement, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. LaRoche elected to retire after Williams told him he had to reduce his son's time in the clubhouse.

Sale's relationship with the front office may come into play again before the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline if the team deals him with an eye toward the future.

She came home from work yesterday and said ... "Who's the prick who cut up his teams uniforms? WTH is that guys problem?"

We have to wear uncomfortable FR clothing and protective gear at my job.
Try walking around cutting up everyone's stuff and see how it goes.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale has apologized for the jersey-cutting incident that resulted in his five-day suspension, saying that he regrets having to miss games but that he does not regret standing up for what he believes in.

Sale was fined and suspended for five days after being scratched from his scheduled start for cutting up the team’s throwback jerseys as a protest over being forced to wear them against his will.

“I have regret, because I play 33 times a year at most in the regular season,” Sale told MLB.com on Monday. “So I put a lot of emphasis on when I play and I take a lot of pride in work that I do. When I can’t or don’t do that, yeah, I have disappointment in myself for not being there for my guys.”

Sale thought the team’s 1976 collared throwback jerseys were “uncomfortable and unorthodox,” and he told MLB.com he thought the team was giving “PR and jersey sales” more importance than winning because he thought the jerseys might alter his mechanics.

“Do I regret standing up for what I believe in? Absolutely not. Do I regret saying business should not be first before winning? Absolutely not.”

Sale will return from his suspension on Thursday to start against the Chicago Cubs, presuming he is not traded by then, as he has been subject of several trade rumors ahead of MLB’s Aug. 1 trade deadline.

The White Sox have a 49–50 record and are in third place in the AL Central.
