Veteran southpaw Mike Dunn announced that he is finished with his playing days, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today conveyed via Twitter. The 34-year-old says he’s ready to spend more time with his family.

I can't believe this guy is only 34 years old. I swear I remember him pitching for the Pirates when I was in middle school.

I can't believe he didn't come to the Twins, so that Wes Johnson could fix his career.

Paxton out 3-4 months after a cyst removal

Per team, he “underwent a microscopic lumbar discectomy with removal of a peridiscal cyst . . . His approximate timeline to return to Major League action is 3-4 months.”

Missing 3-4 months for a cyst?

That seems long.

Discectomy is surgery to remove lumbar (low back) herniated disc material that is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord.

It tends to be done as microdiscectomy, which uses a special microscope to view the disc and nerves. This larger view allows the surgeon to use a smaller cut (incision). And this causes less damage to surrounding tissue.

Before the disc material is removed, a small piece of bone (the lamina) from the affected vertebra may be removed. This is called a laminotomy or laminectomy. It allows the surgeon to better see the herniated disc.

Removal of cysts from lumbar disks has a long recovery time. My sister had it done about 2 months ago and just got cleared to ride in the car down to Arizona. It's pretty painful.

Jessica Mendoza quit as Mets special advisor, and she is also out of the Sunday Night Baseball booth. This has to be related to the backlash on her comments about Mike Fiers being a snitch.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28653997/jessica-mendoza-signs-extension-espn-resigns-mets-adviser-role

Jessica Mendoza has signed a multiyear extension with ESPN and will no longer continue in her role as baseball operations adviser to the New York Mets, it was announced Friday.

Mendoza, 39, will become the first woman to serve as a solo analyst on national baseball telecasts when she does weeknight games for ESPN this season. She also will become the first woman to serve as a World Series game analyst on national radio this season.

Mendoza's increased appearances on ESPN led her to resign as an adviser to the Mets and general manager Brodie Van Wagenen.

Dodgers now at 42 on their roster after their trades.
Pederson May still be a goner.

Probably got a better offer from another team....Joc and Stripling are really reasonable contracts.

If the LAD want to give you some talent you take it; but be patient. I really liked the haul for Dozier.

Savage Boston Sports 🇺🇸🍀❄️☃️
@SavageBoston
1. John Henry’s Fenway sports group is worth 6.6 billion.

2. The Red Sox made 550 million dollars in revenue in 2018

3. A Red Sox game for a family of 4 costs on average 500 dollars

4. A 12 oz Bud Light costs 12 dollars

5. They “can’t afford” to sign Mookie Betts

Lol. Cubs are also claiming financial restrictions.

Good one.

If I remember correctly Henry was the Marlins owner first and traded that ownership for Boston ownership. Gutted Marlins too if I remember correctly.

I thought Wayne Huizenga was the guy who gutted the Marlins right after winning the World Series.

Henry entered Major League Baseball with his purchase of a small interest in the New York Yankees in 1991. Henry became the sole owner of the Florida Marlins in 1999, purchasing the club from Wayne Huizenga for a reported $158 million. In January 2002, Henry sold the Marlins in a multi-franchise deal to Jeffrey Loria, then owner of the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals).

Silly. Hoops guys will probably like it.

---------------------------------------------------------

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Major League Baseball is planning radical changes to the playoffs to begin in 2022. The changes, summarized:

Seven playoff teams in each league, up from five
Team with best record in each league gets first-round bye
Two division winners and best wild card team host best-of-three series against bottom three wild cards
Division winner with second-best record gets to pick first-round opponent from three wild cards
Division winner with third-best record gets to pick first-round opponent afterwards
MLB would host a reality TV-esque show on the Sunday night of the day the regular season ends in which teams select their playoff opponents. Sherman likens it to the NCAA selection show.

Unsurprisingly, the motivation for this change has a lot to do with enticing broadcasters for a new TV deal. The changes would add more games of intrigue late in the regular season and the shorter playoff series would increase the importance of each game.

As Sherman mentions, the MLBPA has to sign off on this for the changes to take effect. The suggested changes do, on the surface, get more teams into the mix which could allay the union’s concern over the increasing rate of tanking across the league. That being said, increasing the playoff field to 14 teams is almost half the league. As The Athletic’s Tim Britton points out, the 2014 Mets — who went 79-83 — would have been a playoff team under this system. At a certain point, teams wouldn’t even have to feign trying to be competitive and could still luck into a playoff berth and hoist that banner proudly while still slashing payroll.

At any rate, we’re all going to be talking about this for a while, which helps divert attention away from the whole Astros thing.
