Mattingly is probably the best manager ever that was also a great player.

Lots of good teams in the regular season have gone down in the wild card series.
And teams can't complain one and out.
Three game series.

Omaha and all of Baseball lost one of the all time greats today. RIP Mr. Gibson.

My thing was winning,” Gibson said in his autobiography, “Stranger to the Game,” written with Lonnie Wheeler and published in 1994. “I didn’t see how being pleasant or amiable had anything to do with winning, so I wasn’t pleasant on the mound and I wasn’t amiable off it.”

“For my money, the most intimidating, arrogant pitcher ever to kick up dirt on a mound is Bob Gibson,” Tim McCarver, the Cardinals’ catcher and a longtime broadcaster, recalled in his 1987 memoir, “Oh, Baby, I Love It!”

“If you ever saw Gibson work,” McCarver said, “you’d never forget his style: his cap pulled down low over his eyes, the ball gripped — almost mashed — behind his right hip, the eyes smoldering at each batter almost accusingly.”

Profiling Gibson for The New Yorker in September 1980, Roger Angell told how after his 17-strikeout game against Detroit, a reporter asked if Gibson had always been as competitive as he seemed that day.

“He said yes,” Angell wrote, “and he added that he had played several hundred games of tick-tack-toe against one of his young daughters and that she had yet to win a game from him. He said this with a little smile, but it seemed to me that he meant it: he couldn’t let himself lose to anyone. Then someone asked him if he had been surprised by what he had just done on the field, and Gibson said, ‘I’m never surprised by anything I do.’”

Pack Robert Gibson was born on Nov. 9, 1935, in Omaha, Neb., the youngest of seven children, and grew up in a housing project there. His father, Pack Gibson, died a few months before his birth and his mother, Victoria, worked in a laundry. His brother Josh, a graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, became his mentor and introduced him to recreational programs he oversaw. Bob Gibson became an all-city basketball player in high school and played several positions on an American Legion baseball team that won a city title.

His favorite sport was basketball, and he became the first Black athlete to play basketball and baseball at Creighton. He averaged more than 20 points a game for his collegiate basketball career and pitched, caught and played several other positions for the baseball team.

So if MLB was in such a hurry to blast thru the postseason....no off days, blah blah blah. Why haven't there been any games 2 days in a row?

Yanks crushing it so far

Ummm, when your pitchers give up 4-5 runs a game, score 9
That plan does work, ya know.

(for everyone wanting to scrap our recent improve-the-lineup plan)

Its not like fans have to be allowed to prepare
Fly the teams in and play

Twins need their hitting coaches to be able to fix. Not just muddle along

HAD the ability last year

Lacked it badly this year.

Gotta keep hitting.

Tampa Bay reliever Shane McClanahan became the first pitcher in baseball history to make his big league debut in a postseason game

Seems unreal.

* are fortunate that the fans haven't been able to fully unleash their fury at them.

Hopefully many will remember next year.

Or whenever fans can attend games again.

Brian Kenny from MLB tried hard, he railed Springer with some questions, and it didn't go well for Springer
They get that whole "can't believe youre going there" look to them
Kenny said afterwards, "heck with it, gotta be said"
Loved it
They deserve to squirm.

Braves hitting the long ball. 11 hits/7 runs so far.

Hitting is a post season mystery to the Twins.

I see the media ripping the Yankees for being too cute with their pitching early.

Happ moaned he wasn't comfy coming in the second inning.

Meh, You didn't do your job bud.

Oakland is a mess. pitching is getting lit up.

Its so different watching the Yankees
The impatient people around here should be big Yankee fans
Because there is no second thought or second guess
They see trouble, they move. Its a reactionary franchise, on and off the field.
You won't see them waiting for shit to happen, they make the move before it needs to be made at times.
Fun to see the differences. Boone has a lot of weight on those shoulders. But he's a good man for the job.
Liked him as a player, loved him as an analyst, really like him at manager.
Theres only about 5 people in the game that can manage there, he's one.

Love seeing all these guys with long hair up there throwing gas
Every teams got a couple
The TB kid was really solid last night
And their pen was lights out at times.
SD has some long lanky arms, have no idea how these guys keep making contact on everything they throw
The game has quickly evolved … you cannot sneak a 100 mph ball past anyone anymore on these good rosters
They talked about it at length last night, Yanks for one have some guys you look at and say "slow power hitter" but in reality their hands are lightning quick
Its a different game than it was even 10 years ago

Yet the Twins are smarter than everyone going on spin rates vs gas.

Truly Alcala and May were the only real flame throwers in the pen. Duff and Rogers hit 94, occasionally 95, but the gas wasn't their out pitch.

And the MN hitter seemed really slow at the dish. Kept seeing stuff down the middle missed.

That's huge Ed
Tight games like last night, NO ONE misses stuff on the plate on these rosters
The evolving game …
Used to see 4-5 guys in a lineup that were outs
None of these lineups have as easy out really
Wears staffs out
I credit NY for that, they were the first to realize the importance of wearing pitchers down from start to finish

Rowson started it there. They had competent coaches continue it.

Rowson started it in MN. This year was a complete failure for the Twins.

Going to regret letting Rowson go I'm afraid
He apparently has a thing going
And we let it walk
Thinking Roccos success had a lot to do with a couple real good assistants.
I still believe in Rocco tho
His TB background will be helpful in improving what happened this year (I hope)

Keep it going, Rays! I don't want to root for the Astros to go to the WS.
