Of course he feels godlike. He's lost 96 games a year for 3 straight years and got a 2 year contract extension. I'd be feeling pretty damn smug an immortal too.

Major League Baseball has approved a padded cap designed to protect pitchers from potentially dangerous line drives.

After testing a number of prototypes from various companies, a cap manufactured by the 4Licensing Corporation subsidiary isoBlox will be made available to pitchers at all levels when they report to Spring Training. Use of the equipment will be optional. Since the caps need to be fitted, players who are interested will be provided with contact information for the company.

There are no plans to require Minor League players to wear the product.

MLB, which will continue to work with other companies that are developing products to enhance safety, alerted all teams of the development Tuesday morning after consultation with the Major League Baseball Players Association.

"We're excited to have a product that meets our safety criteria," MLB's executive vice president for labor relations Dan Halem told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" on Tuesday. "MLB is committed to working with manufacturers to develop products that offer maximum protection to our players, and we're not stopping at all."

McCarthy has already said he wont'wear it, because he claims it doesn't do enough. He's also working w/some company, apparently, to provide something better.

Lance Berkman retires. HOFer? Seems to be tough for those Astros to get in.

If Larry Walker isn't in, it's hard to argue that Berkman should be.

hmmm, this group of players falls into what I call the Joe Mauer conundrum.  Players that put up good numbers during their careers, however, playoff games, World Series appearances, and certain other intangibles just seem to be missing to put them into Cooperstown.  I realize some people consider Mauer a first ballot HOF guy.    IMO, he presently falls short of HOF status.  If he could put together another solid five seasons and perhaps add another batting title to his resume, even I would probably give him consideration.  But the Larry Walkers, Lance Berkmans and even the Chris Biggios of MLB are marginal HOF players IMO.

Well, at least not first ballot HOF players.

Ron Darling got a little controversial and funny on MLB Network last night.

He and Al Leiter were revealing their Top 5 current RH starting pitchers one by one. They weren't agreeing on the first couple revealed, but after Leiter revealed his #3 and Darling knew his #3 was going to be the same, Darling said "Al, I'm guessing you're a Republican, and I'm a Democrat, but we finally have something we agree on. I also have King Felix at #3."

Leiter almost fell over laughing.

Take that crap to the political thread, Mister.

If Ron Darling can get away with it successfully on the MLB Network, I'm gonna go ahead and say posting it on TalkVikes is OK.

I woulda pegged Darling as a Republican though.

Leiter? That was an easy one.

Except Mauer has performed well in the Postseason.

and by the time his career is truly over, he will have career numbers that clearly justify his inclusion in the HOF.

First Ballot?  that remains to be seen.  but he's certainly on the right path.

I'm not sure about "performed well".

eye of the beholder and it should be 11 hits and 2 2Bs.

And you can't blame Mauer for Gardenhire's stupidity in pitching changes.  Wetting his pants against the Yankees, etc.  for "TEAM RECORD stat is pointless.
And posting his HOME RUN totals?  Really?  Mauer's never been a Home run hitter.  RBIs are dependent on guys on base in front of him etc.  I would be interested to see how many opportunities he had w RISP in those games.

Can you conjure up those stats?

That is what I thought.  Mauer has pretty much sucked in playoff appearances.

Why would anyone look at 35 AB and use those to judge whether a player should be in the HOF or not?

Mauer is currently the 12th best C in history:

1 Johnny Bench
2 Gary Carter
3 Ivan Rodriguez
4 Carlton Fisk
5 Mike Piazza
6 Yogi Berra
7 Bill Dickey
8 Mickey Cochrane
9 Ted Simmons
10 Gabby Hartnett
11 Thurman Munson
12 Joe Mauer

Simmons and Munson are not in the HOF. Piazza is not, but should be. Pudge will get in unless he was a confirmed roider (can't remember).

Looks like Joe has a little work to do.

And he actually finishes his catching career in 12th. He really shouldn't be able to move any higher up this list since everything he does from this day forward is not as a C.

But remember most of these players moved to other positions too. Fisk to DH, for example.

As long as Mauer stays in the game for another 6-7 years and sustains a high AVG/high OBP while a 1B/DH, he will get in the HOF.

I'm willing to place a modest wager with anyone that doesn't think Mauer gets in the HOF. I need to live long enough to collect it or they can just pay Matt.

Fine. Then just ignore everything but 10 hits in 9 games with 1 XBH and more Ks than BBs.

Even if you give him the extra double, its hardly a memorable playoff career to this point.

Personally, I think it is pathetic that we have to put up with a team that has a marquee player that people argue about whether they are HOF worthy. A HOF player should pretty much be idolized or appreciated by most knowledgeable fans of a sport. There really should not be a question whether they make the grade. This is the primary reason the Twins are so terrible. We are fed a border-line star player and what we get in return is a crap overall product.

Why do people need to say Mauer is a HOFer NOW? He still has plenty of work to do.

Given how fragile he is I'd say it is far from a done deal

Mauer can hit a double down the line and the umps can **** it up and the bullpen can blow the game through managerial idiocy and it's all Mauer's fault.

BULL and SHIT.

There are a number of players in the HOF that never played in the postseason.  HOW did they get in?

There are plenty that went to the postseason and shit the bed.  HOW did they get in?

How does Greg Maddux go to the HOF?  He only won ONE world series and was notoriously average in the postseason especially the WS.

Is that how Jim Rice got into the HOF by winning all sorts of...hmmmm

I don't think your theory holds water.

Do we have a bet? I don't see the argument.
The team sucks. We have a HOF player that is finding very little team success.
