We could start by yanking the guys who didn't play shortstop for the bulk of their career.

No, I'm counting Banks, A-Fraud and Yount.

A-Fraud especially, since he was the better man (imagine that!) and allowed the lesser SS at the time (Jeter) take the spot on the field that was rightfully A-Fraud's. Had to be hard to watch the Jetes try to play SS at a level so much lower than A-Fraud would have played it.

Wrong on including Banks/ARod/Yount.

Not wrong that Jeter should have moved to third.

Better shortstops than Jeter:

Ripken

I want to isolate on this one.

How is it Ripken is better? Please tell

JAWS:
Ripken 76
Jeter 57

WAR:
Ripken 96
Jeter 72

HR:
Ripken 431
Jeter 256

Ripken was also a much better defensive SS.

Don't think I can rank Ozzie over Jeter. Ozzie was the best fielding shortstop of all time, of that there is no doubt -- but I'll take the better balance of Jeter. Close call, though.

Larkin? Please. Great player, but injured all the time.

For the most part, I have no use for "all time " lists but since you went there...

Jeter's career average is .313. Cal hit .276. Jeter had a much better on-base percentage (.374 to .340) and, believe it or not Jeter out-slugged Ripken, .465 to .447

Jeter was in seven World Series and batted .321/.384/.449 compared to Cal's one Series in which he hit .167/.286/.167

I'm not seeing how Ripken can be called "better"

They are different players. I'd rather have Jeter as my shortstop, captain and leadoff hitter than have Ripken and his ironman legacy playing for me.

Where are you getting those SLG numbers???? Jeter only slugged .446, which is lower than Ripken. And it will only sink further this year.

I'd rather have Jeter as my shortstop, captain and leadoff hitter than

Almost anyone
And certainly most on that "list"

He was, is, and always will be a WINNER

I'm sure he has a horrible WAR number
In fact, I HOPE he does.

Jeter AVG: .312
Ripken AVG: .276

Jeter OBP: .381
Ripken OBP: .340

Interesting how OBP and batting average ceases to matter when Mauer isn't part of the discussion

Sorry to disappoint, but Jeter's WAR numbers are excellent.

I'm surprised Mauer hasn't been brought into the slopestyle discussions yet...

Am I hearing that Jeter was a better player than Ernie Banks? You would pick Jeter over Banks if those were your only two choices when starting a team? I'm not comprehending that one.

Again,

Jeter WAR 72

Could not agree more. Good luck explaining that to the saber-twats. I've always just laughed at idiot Minneaotan's booing guys like Jeter and AJ. So clueless and ignorant. The same idiot fans who a few years ago couldn't stop patting themselves on the back for giving Zumaya a standing ovation when he broke his arm.

It's not Jeter's fault 90% of New Yorkers are assholes. I think a lot of the Jeter hate has to do with that.

A few years ago the Yankees acquired a Shortstop of considerable skill at the position, But didn't move Jeter.

That Shortstop could play rings around Jeter defensively...but they didn't move Jeter.

That shortstop was also reknowned for tearing the cover off the ball...but they didn't move Jeter.

Jeter should have moved to 2B.  Instead they moved ARoid to 3B.  Worked out ok for them...but anyone who thinks Jeter was the better SS at the time is fooling themselves.

ARoid, before the Roids, is the SS I would have taken a million times over before Jeter.

The Jeter love in here if funny.  Guys a HOFer to be sure...but come on.

He's not even the best Shortstop of his era.

There are a few in here saying they would take Jeter over anyone all time.

He's great, but come on, that's preposterous.

I know this may be hard for you to accept, but advanced statistics say Jeter is awesome.
