Surely someone in this group could play for the Twins.......

While the Cardinals’ compilation of outfield talent is enviable, it nonetheless presents real difficulties to the team’s front office, Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes in a piece that is well worth a full read. Indeed, that is precisely how GM John Mozeliak described things. “When you look at depth in baseball, it’s a good problem to have,” he said. “But I think we’re starting to get to the point where it might become a problem. So even though it’s a nice thing to have true depth in your system, at some point you’ve got to be able to play the depth.”

The club’s big league outfielders are off to a somewhat underwhelming start, combining for just a 95 wRC+. A group of four primary options – Matt Holliday, Allen Craig, Peter Bourjos, and Jon Jay – is responsible for most of that line. Meanwhile, a trio of well-regarded younger options has gathered at Triple-A, with top prospects Oscar Taveras and Stephen Piscotty joined by offseason trade acquisition Randal Grichuk (whose big numbers in his first Triple-A campaign make the Bourjos and Grichuk for David Freese and Fernando Salas deal look even better for St. Louis.)

And away we go. The Cardinals called up prized prospect Oscar Taveras on Saturday, and already, he's being compared to Albert Pujols. "There's definitely a high level of anticipation and excitement," Mozeliak said. "When you take the time and invest heavily in the international market, you're looking to someday maybe getting a return like this." Taveras, their best hitting prospect since, well, Pujols, hit .325 at Class AAA-Memphis this season with seven home runs and a team-leading 40 RBI. He has been on fire the last 10 games, hitting .462 with a .488 on-base percentage and .641 slugging percentage. The Cardinals planned to be patient and keep him in the minor leagues, but after losing four out of five games entering Saturday, the thinking changed.

Twins lose 4 of 5, or worse, and then give up on the last day of a road trip because it's too exhausting for 2 starters coming off the DL to fly to the west coast, then back to MN>

Tavares had a lost season in 2013 with a high ankle sprain that eventually needed surgery. Hope if Buxton ends up with a lost 2014 season it ends up just the same type of blip on his course to the majors ala Taveras and it is just a one year detour on the way to greatness. Good/unlucky omen maybe...knock on wood.

Chipper blew out a knee running to first and landing on the 1st base bag awkwardly right before he was set to start his MLB career. Cost 1 year at the start.
Joe tore his meniscus sliding at the Dome trying to catch a pop foul. Cost him 1 year at the start.

Happens to others too.

Another big shot coming up. A pot smoking bigshot. Astros didn't give him a Scarlett letter though.

The Astros have informed Jon Singleton he will be promoted from Class AAA Oklahoma City for tomorrow's game.

Sad I missed Stewart. May have to make a return trip to CR. Trying for a New Britain trip in 2 weeks.

Stewart just K'd the last out of Top of the 2nd on 3 pitches. All change ups. 2 swinging and strike 3 watched down the middle.

If Stewart can master the change-up that would be huge. It is THE strikeout pitch. If you have a good one you can be successful with 2 pitches and a so-so 3rd. Fastball, change-up combo is a great foundation.

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the Astros have signed first base prospect Jonathan Singleton to a five-year contract with three club options. The historic deal carries $10 million in guaranteed money and can be worth up to $35 million if all the options and incentives are triggered.

Singleton gives up one year of FA with this deal. If Astros pick up all three options, he’s still on the market at 30 years old.

Great deal. Similar to what the Pirates were trying to do with Polanco, but he turned it down.

I'm always in favor of signing stud prospects that you believe in to longterm deals early to save millions and gain extra years of control. Evan Longoria's deal is the best in the sport and has been for a long time. If I were on the agent/player side, I would almost never sign a longterm deal early with a young stud prospect.
