Major League Baseball has acknowledged that it incorrectly interpreted the new home-plate collision rules when it overturned an "out" call at the plate on a controversial play in Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Russell Martin's play at home plate was incorrectly interpreted by the umpires, MLB admitted.

The play took place in the third inning of the Pirates' 11-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds had the bases loaded with one out. Umpires on the field originally ruled that Pittsburgh pitcher Stolmy Pimentel's throw to catcher Russell Martin was in time to force out Cincinnati's Devin Mesoraco at home.

However, that call was overturned after the play was reviewed by officials in the Replay Command Center in New York, and Mesoraco was ruled safe, because Martin was deemed to have illegally blocked the plate with his foot.

After the game, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle phoned MLB's executive vice president of baseball operations, Joe Torre, to discuss the play. And on Thursday, Torre issued a statement saying replay officials hadn't properly applied the rule to the circumstances that govern a force play at the plate.

Torre said the play "was one of the most difficult calls that our umpires have faced this season, given that the positioning of the catcher at home plate was necessary to record the force out. After evaluating the play and the details of the review, we recognize that this play was not the type that should have resulted in a violation of Rule 7.13."

"The goal of Rule 7.13," Torre's statement went on, "is to prevent egregious home-plate collisions, and despite how challenging these situations can be, we have made important progress in accomplishing that goal."

Managers, catchers and baserunners have all expressed confusion this season about differing interpretations of the new rule. But until this week, forceouts at the plate hadn't been part of that confusion. Hurdle continued to maintain Thursday that Martin did nothing wrong.

"It's a force play, so his foot has to be on the plate," the Pirates manager told reporters in Pittsburgh. "It's not the same as creating a lane for a runner sliding. Once the ball's in his glove and his foot's on the plate, he's out. Wherever the runner is, he's out. And [Martin] did everything humanly possible to get out of the way to clear the lane with a back roll, and the runner slid completely across the plate with no obstruction. He made the play he was supposed to make."

Yep. You should still be able to call interference if the catcher is blocking the plate w/o the ball. That call can always be made.

After the game, Ortiz had the following to say,

“What is he watching?” Ortiz said afterward. “He's not watching the same ballgame that everybody's watching, I guess.”


“People are supposed to have your back at home, and it never happens,” said Ortiz, who hit his 16th homer in the 10th inning, the first of back-to-back shots that won the game. “It's always like that. I've been here more than a decade and the scorekeepers here are always horrible. This is home, man.”


“Got to make it clear,” Ortiz said. “It's not my first rodeo, man. You know how hard it is to get a hit, man?”

And Torre didn't take too kindly to this. Here was his response, which came in an official Major League Baseball press release:

"Official scorers have a job to do, and by their very nature, their decisions don't make everyone happy. But everyone in our game deserves respect. I hope that David will meet that standard going forward, because I don't share the same views that he expressed.

"Official scorers should never give any benefit of the doubt to the home team. We want their best judgment, based on the rules. We have a process to review the decisions that our scorers make. Even when there are inevitable disagreements, we expect everybody to act professionally and respect the game and the integrity of our scorers."

Pretty funny cold shoulder treatment afterwards, if you saw it.


Pearce's drive made it 5-1 in the fifth, and Hardy went deep off Jose Ramirez in the eighth for his 159th career homer and first since Sept. 5, 2013, against Jose Quintana of the Chicago White Sox.
"We like hitting home runs," Jones said.
Back in the dugout, Hardy got the silent treatment. He threw sunflower seeds on himself and was doused with water by Cruz.
The two-time All-Star shortstop has hit at least 22 home runs five times, including a career-high 30 with Baltimore in 2011.
"Normally I just put my head down and run. This time I kind of watched a little bit to make sure that it got up," Hardy said. "As I was rounding third, I looked into the dugout and no one had moved. So I kind of knew that they were going to sit there."

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Addison Reed said he is quitting smokeless tobacco following the death of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn.

Diamondbacks closer Addison Reed claims he has quit chewing tobacco after learning of Tony Gwynn's death from mouth cancer.

Reed, who played for Gwynn at San Diego State, threw away seven cans of smokeless tobacco from his locker, and another two from his car, before Saturday night's game against the San Francisco Giants, according to MLB.com.

"It's one of those things where I've done it for so long it's just become a habit, a really bad habit," Reed said Saturday. "It was something I always told myself I would quit, like next month, and the next thing you know it's been six or seven years."

Gwynn, who played for the San Diego Padres during his 20-year career, died on Monday after battling cancer. He was 54.

Gwynn was diagnosed with cancer of a salivary gland in 2010, and publicly stated he believed it was caused by his smokeless tobacco use throughout his career.

Reed said he first tried smokeless tobacco in his junior year of high school.

"It started to get bad my first year in pro ball and it's one of those things where I've always done it," Reed said. "I'd come to the field and throw one in and have multiple ones. I'd have one on the ride home, one on the way to the field and it was one of those things where I always had one with me."

That is one ugly hat. Let's hope it's not something we see very often. If everyone started wearing those, there would be no kids following or playing baseball at all anymore. It would be the death of the sport.

In terms of impact bats on the trade market, teams could do a lot worse than Josh Willingham, if the Twins part with the slugging outfielder. Like Seth Smith, Willingham is at the end of his contract and would bring value because of his potential to deliver major power, though he has missed over 30 games due to injury in 2014.

The larger question is whether the Twins are selling after the acquisition of Kendry Morales. Apparently, the organization believes it can make a run with its roster as is, but the coming weeks may change that belief. By July 31, Willingham will show whether he can be consistent at the plate while the Twins will know whether they can keep up the AL Central. Expect Willingham to go as soon as he gets hot.

70% chance on that one I'd go.

When you don't have solutions in-house in the upper minors the devil you know looks awfully inviting.

Yeah sure. players get in excess of $20 mil a year to play this sport. I am sure there will be plenty of parents willing to subject their kids to terrible display of baseball fashion for the chance that their kid can make that kind of coin.

Besides, as time goes on the Petrified diaper will see significant design changes and will look more cool.

What will cause the death of baseball, is the greed of the owners, players, and coaches. The slow pace of the game, and the rising popularity of other sports like Football, Basketball and Soccer.
