Tony Dungy compared Wilson to a young Joe Montana a couple of weeks ago, and the hyperbole-prompted snickers were everywhere. But what about Wilson isn’t Montana-like? Shorter guys. Don’t put up gaudy stats. Teammates love them. Coaches love them. Tremendous internal drive to win. Both 25 when they won their first Super Bowl. And, most important, they play big in the big games.

Wilson has gone head-to-head with the game’s luminaries seven times. Seven games against Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers. The tale of those seven games:

W-L Avg. Margin Comp.Pct. Yards TD Int. Rating
Wilson 7-0 14.4 points 64.5 1,491 14 1 113.0

One interception: a tipped pick on Sunday, deflected by Aqib Talib and intercepted by Chris Harris. One pick, no losses in seven games.

That’s a team record,” Wilson said by phone from the bowels of CenturyLink. “When we play against the best, like we did today, it’s a humbling experience. I want to be up there with those guys one day. It’s a thrill to be able to play in games like this, against guys like Peyton, and I just want to excel when we play them. It can’t get any better than a game like this today.”

I want to be up there with those guys one day.

I'm not in "Russell's camp" as far as putting him with these guys and Luck, though I do like him, but this is impressive, even with the respective defenses that he's facing vs. what his competitors are facing (SEA):

With Sunday's victory, Wilson improved to 7-0 in games he's played against Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. In those games he's thrown 14 touchdown passes and just one interception.

And even the INT yesterday was kind of a weird one.

Noting the quarterbacks of the future, and their Sundays:

Teddy Bridgewater (age 21) started his first game. Against Atlanta, he led six scoring drives in three quarters, completed 19 of 30 without turning it over, and left a good first impression. But Bridgewater is a smallish guy, and his second-half sprained ankle was a reminder of some of the reservations teams had about him before the draft.

Blake Bortles (22) also started his first game, and his 29-for-37 (78.4%) day at San Diego was the most accurate quarterback debut in NFL history. He knew when to take off too (five rushes, 24 yards). Later today, Greg Bedard, who watched Bridgewater and Bortles on Sunday, will grade their debuts here at The MMQB.

Ryan Tannehill (26) had a day of redemption, completing 74% of his throws in London to beat the moribund Raiders; he had 14 straight completions at one point. So much for the motivational ploy, or whatever that was last week from Joe Philbin, of not naming him the starter.

Andrew Luck (25) was the day’s most productive QB, 29 of 41 for 393 yards and 4 touchdowns in the 41-17 rout of Tennessee. “I’m embarrassed,’’ said Tennessee coach Ken Whisenhunt. Lots of coaches feel that way after facing Luck for three hours.

Colin Kaepernick (26) desperately needed the 26-21 win over Philadelphia, as did his team. Kaepernick (218 passing yards, 58 rushing) is surviving right now, not flourishing. He’s just got too much leakage in his offensive front, and with tackle Anthony Davis and tight end Vernon Davis both getting hurt Sunday, Kaepernick could really use a bye. Unfortunately, that won’t come until Week 8.

EJ Manuel (23). Okay, I’ve never been hounded by J.J. Watt for three hours before, so this is easy for me to say: But Manuel looked shaky at times in the loss to Houston—completing just 48% of his throws—and continued a troubling trend: His accuracy has been worse than the previous week in his last three games.

Geno Smith (23) had another shaky day in the Meadowlands in the Jets’ loss to Detroit, and cursed at a heckling fan while leaving the field after the game. The Jets (1-3) are watching their season slip away, and they’ve got to decide if it’s more important to give Smith training for the future than it is to try to win now with Michael Vick who, at this point, probably gives them a better chance to do so.

Wilson has been BETTER than Luck this year and last year

QB rating
big wins
TD to INT

The only area where Luck is better is yards and that is because he throws the ball a lot more

It is like Montana was a much better QB than Marino but Marino put up all the gaudy numbers

Police Have a Much Bigger Domestic Abuse Problem Than the NFL

Research suggests that family violence is two to four times higher in the law-enforcement community than in the general population. So where's the public outrage?

Andrew Luck has been almost perfect the last two weeks.

He has 8 TD passes to 1 INT and throwing for over 350 yards per game

Now OTOH, he has played two stiff teams in Jax and Tenn

Next 3 games are

Ravens
@ Houston
Bengals

If he keeps up this level of play against those 3 teams he will have earned all the accolades already given to him.

Smoke those 3 teams - especially Houston and the Bengals, and I will be a believer!

He is turning it on now

So with respect to the level of QB play, the quality of the team you are playing against matters, but the quality of the team you play on does not matter?

Some really good stuff on the Power Rankings this week:

Nick Foles was 0-of-10 with two interceptions on passes more than 20 yards downfield Sunday, the most attempts without a completion in ESPN Stats & Info's dataset (since 2006).

Andrew Luck completed 68.2 percent of his deep passes in his past two games (both wins). Luck was 5-of-12 with an interception on deep throws during Indy's 0-2 start.

Same old Jay. Cutler was 7-of-13 for 83 yards and two interceptions in the second half Sunday, posting a 0.1 Total QBR. Carolina's inconsistent defense is next.

The six quarterbacks below Tom Brady in Total QBR (Tannehill, Locker, Cassel, G. Smith, Manuel and Henne) have all either split time or have been in quarterback controversies this season.

Since the start of 2013, the Saints have the second-worst turnover margin (minus-12) on the road of any team. They must figure out road problems before seriously contending.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A few thoughts on the Carolina Panthers' 31-24 victory over the Chicago Bears at Bank of America Stadium:

What it means: The Panthers have been looking for the chemistry that made them successful last season, and finally seemed to find it late in the first half. Having been outscored 75-29 in their previous two games and trailing 21-7, the Panthers got back to what they do best. They became more disciplined on defense after a shaky first half, and quarterback Cam Newton showed he doesn’t have to run to beat you.

For the defense, the key was playing gap control, pressuring the quarterback and forcing turnovers. They forced turnovers in the fourth quarter, and Newton took advantage with pinpoint accuracy. Prior to that, Carolina looked like the team that had been routed the past two weeks. When Chicago took a 21-7 lead, it marked the 15th time in the last 21 drives the Panthers had given up points. The problem remained the same: missed tackles and players out of position. They tightened things up in the second half, which could be a good sign moving forward. They still lead the division with a 3-2 record.

Stock watch: The coaches keep saying wide receiver/return specialist Philly Brown has something special. He definitely showed good awareness after being leveled on a punt return before the ball even arrived. With officials throwing flags and the players in a scrum, Brown scooped up the loose ball and ran 79 yards down the left sideline to give Carolina a 7-0 lead. It marked the first punt return for a touchdown by Carolina in 164 games, ending the longest streak in the NFL. The last came by Steve Smith in 2003. Brown also dropped a punt and looked lost on a couple of others to go with two rushes for 22 yards. He remains a work in progress.

Rookie mistakes: As spectacular as wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin looks on some catches, he's still making rookie mistakes. He had a fumble and a couple of drops, none bigger than the one inside the 15 with 4½ minutes remaining. He had another pass where he got turned around in the end zone and never made a play on the ball.

Game ball: Newton still hasn’t been unleashed with his legs, but he was throwing strikes with his arm. After a slow start he finished 19-for-35 for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Were it not for drops, his numbers would have looked better.

What’s next: The Panthers begin a two-game road trip with a 1 p.m. ET game at Cincinnati. This will begin the toughest stretch of the year for Carolina against Cincinnati, Green Bay, New Orleans, Seattle and Philadelphia.

INDIANAPOLIS -- A few thoughts on the Indianapolis Colts' 20-13 win over the Baltimore Ravens at Lucas Oil Stadium:

What it means: Overall, the Colts' third consecutive victory was their most impressive yet, given the quality of the opponent. But they caused too many self-inflicted wounds to do handsprings over it. Andrew Luck threw two interceptions, one on an ill-advised pass to the goal line in the fourth quarter, and punt returner Griff Whalen had two blunders -- failing to make a fair catch that cost the Colts 20 yards of field position in the first quarter and fumbling a punt in the fourth that set up a Ravens field goal. The defense had its best overall performance of the season despite a late first-half letdown that allowed the Ravens a field goal.

Stock watch: Sergio Brown stepped into the starting lineup at free safety in place of the suspended LaRon Landry and looked like a keeper. He made a standout open-field tackle and sacked Joe Flacco in the second quarter when the Ravens were fourth-and-1 on the Colts' 3-yard line. Brown also was blitzing on a rushed Flacco pass that was picked off by Vontae Davis.

Center of attention: As expected, undrafted rookie Jonotthan Harrison started at center in place of A.Q. Shipley, a puzzling move because the Colts' offensive line had exceeded expectations in the first four games. Then again, Shipley had been released by Baltimore in the preseason, so it's not like he's an All-Pro. Harrison appeared to muff a third-and-1 play with Luck late in the first quarter; Luck didn't seem to expect the snap and failed to pick up the first down. Harrison also sent a shotgun snap off Luck's hands in the fourth, although the Colts scored on that drive. The jury will remain out on the switch.

Game ball: One week after a disappointing performance against Tennessee, former first-round draft pick Bjoern Werner had his best game as a pro. The second-year linebacker had two sacks, his first of the season. The second one came on the Ravens' final series.

What's next: The Colts (3-2) have no time to kick back and revel in this one. They play at AFC South co-leader Houston on Thursday.

JJ Watt is incredible.  Watched him blow by the LT so quickly that he could barely touch him. Only problem was Watt had such a head of steam Romo was able to avoud him and throw a TD strike to Williams.

But that play showed what an incredible first step Watt has.

At first I thought QBR was a good stat

Looking at this list I say it is bogus

Nick Foles, who has stunk this year, is rated over Russell Wilson

Dalton, Kap, Brady, Newton are 21-24 in rankings

Mike Glennon is at #7 HA!

I believe they look like anyone that hasn't already cast his bust for the HOF and thinks that maybe Andrew Luck could be a better QB.

Watching last night's game really pointed out the flaws in rating QBs

Fitzpatrick had a higher passer rating than Luck but anyone watching the game would know Luck was much more effective and productive

Similarly, if you go by the QBR stat you will see similar contradictions although for last night's game Lucks QBR of 91.4 looks accurate compared to Fitz of 40.7

How do you account for Wilson's back breaking 122 rushing yards in MNF?

Mike Rodak: This will be the fourth consecutive season in which the Bills and Patriots meet early at Ralph Wilson Stadium. They've played the Patriots tough each time, including a win in 2011. Buffalo's key to this game will be putting pressure on Tom Brady, who has completed just 39 percent of his passes for a 2.0 Total QBR when under pressure this season. The Bills are tied with the New York Jets for an NFL-best 17 sacks and are in prime position to take advantage of a shaky Patriots offensive line. Bills 21, Patriots 20

The fact that the Bills and Jets have the most sacks really renders this stat useless when you add up their win total.

Never would have thought the Seattle DEFENSE would become the weak link

From Elias: The Rams went 19-of-22 passing today, an 86.4 completion percentage. That's the highest single-game completion percentage allowed by the Seahawks in franchise history.

Russell Wilson rushed for 106 yards on seven carries and also passed for two touchdowns while going 23 for 36 for 313 yards, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history with 300 yards passing and 100 yards rushing.
