Tark's letter to NY Times this weekend

Growing Criticism Confronts The N.F.L.

To the Sports Editor:

Re “U.S. Questions N.F.L. Teams’ Medical Staffs on Painkillers,” Nov. 17: Peeling back the curtain of secrecy and cover-up that has surrounded the problems of domestic violence and the abuse of painkillers in the N.F.L. has exposed a web of deceit that goes back as far as, or further than, when I played quarterback starting in 1961.

I experienced firsthand how the N.F.L. abused its power when I was shot up with anti-inflammatory drugs like Butazolidin to keep me on the playing field. Butazolidin, commonly used on horses, has since been found to be so detrimental that it has been banned for human use in the United States. Yet no one told me at the time that “bute” and other painkillers would destroy my throwing shoulder, forcing me to have it replaced when I left football.

FRAN TARKENTON, Atlanta

The writer played 18 years in the N.F.L. and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

I remember him talking about this on Barerrio's show. He was pointing out how duplicity in the NFL is not exactly a new thing.

Teddy has a ways to go, but he is the least of the problems with the offense right now. A lot of those bad misses are because receivers are not getting to where they are supposed to be.

His receivers dropped some, but most of the misses were high and unreachable.

If the balls that hit receivers in the hands and were dropped had actually been caught, Teddy is looking at around 70% completion yesterday. He made one really bad throw yesterday and that was intercepted. A couple of the "high and unreachables" were receivers not getting to their spots or Teddy having to rush the throw. Now to be sure, there were absolutely a few wide open targets where Teddy sailed the ball when he wasn't pressured and a few wide open targets that he failed to see. All in all if the O-line has even a representative showing and balls that should have been caught were caught, the Vikings probably put at least another 10 points on the board.

Disappointing loss, but we did better than I expected so I'm not that down on the team. I am down on the performance of 3 individuals who were recent 1st round picks.

1. Kalil-turnstile. Needs a wakeup call. Bench him for a game and see if he comes back with some fire.
2. Patterson-Invisible man after all the big plays at the end of last year.
3. Smith-To be fair he's had a good season, this is more a comment about the Packer game. Whiffed on an open field play early that resulted in big gain. Missed INT chance that led to FG.

Positives...
1. Banyard
2. Rhodes
3. Johnson

Really down on the team right now. I think improvements are being made for sure, but there is a long way to go. Go Gophers!

OK, move Kalil there and let someone else play LT for the rest of the year...

@Andrew_Krammer
Kalil: "It was one of those things where I'm walking away thinkinng, "What am I doing." That guy isn't worth my time."

Kalil said his knee is bugging him "on and off" but said confidence also has been a factor.

Heckler who got owned by Matt Kalil says he's going to press charges:

Loserville. This kind of "fan" makes me hate sports.

If we want to find some fault, where has our MLB Brinkley been. Lacey had to big of holes to run through, we need the LB to fill them.

That catch will never be topped
Have any idea the velocity on that ball, after that long in the air?
To stop it with one hand at that angle, ... dead in the air, with no bobble, no bounce, just snagged that thing.
Unreal, no matter how many times you see it.

I'd like to sift through all the top catches and judge them. This one does have a chance to be 'The Catch'.

They've made them look so easy lately, but the velocity on a ball thrown that far makes that one incredible.
If you've ever been on the end of one, you know what I mean.
This wasn't a fifteen yard floater. That's what struck me right away.
Im sure that Brenkhaus guy on ESPN will throw some pretty numbers around about velocity, yadda, and yadda ..... I'm still just stunned he snagged it that quietly.

Dude

really?

Adrian Peterson might want to put down the iPad for a bit.

Soon after it was announced Monday night that a grand jury would not charge police officer Darren Wilson, who killed unarmed teenager Michael Brown in August, Peterson awkwardly compared his child abuse charges in Texas to what was happening in Ferguson, Mo.

@AdrianPeterson

The GRAND JURY DECIDED NOT TO INDICT ME TOO! But that changed a week LATER! MAYBE,BUT NOT LIKELY N THIS CASE #PUTyourTrustNGODnotINtheWORLD!

Other than the words "grand jury" there isn't a thing that ties either case to each other. News broadcasts showed angry protesters burning down businesses amid clouds of police-issued tear gas in Ferguson after the announcement was made, and there were reports of shots fired in the crowd.

This tweet — assuming his account was not hacked — certainly doesn't make the Minnesota Vikings running back, who admitted to police he didn't know what was wrong with hitting his 4-year-old child multiple times when interviewed in his case, appear to be any more aware now than he appeared then.

Other athletes reacted to the Ferguson news, and there was a mixture of anger, confusion and frustration mixed in. But Peterson's confusion takes that word to a whole new direction.

Peterson has been suspended for the remainder of the 2014 NFL season for his actions and can apply for reinstatement as of April 15, 2015 pending a meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell, who told Peterson he needed to show remorse for his actions.
