Al Newman spoke at our Sertoma luncheon today. He accepted a job as an assistant manager and player development specialist for the St. Cloud Rox. Al formerly had a similar job with the Alexandria Northwoods League team that folded after last season. He is a really good speaker and interesting guy to listen to. Matt will be interested to know that Newman graduated from San Diego State with a bachelor's degree in public accounting. If his baseball career had not gone as planned, he was prepared for a life as a CPA. Anyway, he talked a lot about baseball since his retirement and the coaching gigs he has had since 1995. He also talked about the hatred that Dan Gladden and Steve Lombardozzi had for each other and he said it was a pure hatred. He said Lombo was generally regarded as a team asshole and most of the players did not like him. He shared a few stories of how the hatred came to be and from Gladden's perspective I would have wanted to punch out Lombo, as well. Newman is truly a really nice guy and you can tell that he is educated. He also had some great stories about the partying they did in 1987 after they won the division. It is no surprise that the Twins lost their last week's worth of games after clinching the division that September. They were intoxicated most of the time. Al said money is hurting baseball and their definitely a decline in black baseball players because the route to big money in professional sports is much quicker via the NBA or the NFL. He said the same is true no matter what your skin color. He also said it is not surprising the number of Latin American players who are dominating the game today. The players from these smaller countries play soccer or baseball and that is it.

Said it then and still believe it today.
We won two WS in large part to the trade that got us Gladden.
I loved him in SF and could not believe we got him.
It changed our team FOREVER
I had a picture of gladden sitting in the dugout once. Jersey untucked. Pants covered in grass and dirt stains. Face covered in sweat and smeared eye black. Making a couple hundred grand maybe. Next to him sat Kent Hrbek. Everybody's hero. Looking like he was in a JC Penney uniform ad. Clean as Mr Clean. Making a cool couple mil.
That picture and its surrounding story meant "sports" to me from that day on.
You need fighters who refuse to lose some nights. Screw stats and stature.

I could not agree more SMF. And very sad that the Twins hang their hats today on players who have never experienced winning or who aspire to never accept losing. I know you are fans of Dozier and Plouffe, and that is fine, but they are not cut out of the same mold as a Dan Gladden. Gladden was a winner.

I love Gladden.....he was a key component to both WS victories. However, he was surrounded by a little more talent than Dozier and Plouffe have had around them.

The way this team is constructed, guys like Dozier and Plouffe have to be the stars. The problem is, they don't have the talent to be the stars. They would be great as supporting players and why both should be hitting further down in the order.

If either wind up on a team with more talent, you will see them as better than average MLB players.

Stars......no........our stars are in the development stage.

The other day, I wish we could create a hybrid of Mauer and Rosario in terms of their hitting approach.

In terms of baseball, I wouldn't mind a hybrid of Gladden and Mauer......90 % of Gladden's attitude and 10 % of Mauers. 75 % of Mauer's talent and 25 % of Gladdens.

Gladden was able to get the most out of his talent which was limited.

Royals left-hander Brian Duensing, currently pitching for the club’s Triple-A affiliate, has a May 15 opt-out date approaching, MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan tweeted recently. The longtime Twins lefty is off to a strong start in the minors this season, having worked to a 2.04 ERA with a 15-to-4 K/BB ratio in 17 2/3 innings for the Storm Chasers. The 15 strikeouts, in particular, are encouraging for Duensing, who saw his strikeout rate deteriorate rapidly over the life of his final three seasons in Minnesota.

Does anyone think DunceCap would be anywhere close to that K level in the majors?

The signing of right-hander of Mike Pelfrey to a two-year, $16 million contract in the offseason has been a disaster.

Pelfrey is 0-4 with a 6.23 ERA in six starts. In his latest outing, a loss to Texas on May 7, he allowed five runs in five innings and served up three home runs.

“I’m embarrassed,” Pelfrey said. “I feel terrible.”

The Tigers, though, plan to keep Pelfrey in the rotation. He again will look for his first victory Thursday when he starts at Baltimore.

“We don’t have a ton of options,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “If there is a good change to be made, we will make a good change. We have to decide if that’s the case or not.”

He was saying the same crap last year.

Why would the Tigers have expected anything else?

That's why he was such a beloved teammate.....a stand up type of guy.

Me, for my teammates, I want talent........not a no talent hack who stands up and admit he sucks.

I want a teammate that doesn't suck.

Brian Duensing has opted out of his minor league deal with the Royals. Duensing exercised his opt-out clause after going 1-0 with a 3.10 ERA in 12 outings for Triple-A Omaha. The 33-year-old boasts 354 games of major league experience, all with Minnesota. Some bullpen-needy team will take a chance on him.
