So is Paul Hogan. That's really not all that impressive.

I don't pay much attention to baseball pomp and such, but I just found out a great injustice has been corrected. Jack Morris is now in the HoF.

Yep I missed it until I didn't miss it. I think him not being in the hall was a travesty. I guess he was a surly guy with the media and the media votes on the hall right?

For 15 years, yes. But down to only 10 years now.

So the first 15 years used to be media vote and now it's ten? Was it some old timers committee that got Jack in?

Yes, veterans committee.

It was strictly political Morris not being in the Hall. He had the numbers and a ten inning shutout in game seven of the world series.

I don't think so.

Pitchers of his era with better JAWS:

Saberhagen
Cone
Stieb
Dennis Martinez
Hershiser

None of those guys are in the HOF. The election of Morris to the HOF is quite controversial. Definitely the most controversial of the 6 inducted this year.

Hard to keep out Morris...won a WS with Detroit in 84, he led MN to a WS in 91, signed with Toronto in 92 and helped them to a WS, and then they won another in 93 even though he didn't pitch as well....in addition he was one of the best pitchers in the 80s. 175 complete games.

I look at that list of pitchers and say Duh of course Morris is more deserving with the possible exception of Hershiser. I know he had some great years. I don't know how long he sustained excellence. Morris's game 7 ten inning shutout is freaking legend and that differentiates him from a lot of pitchers.

Been wondering if this week's Matt rants about Morris not belonging were simply him rattling the cages , but it appears he's serious.
I told him the other day and I'll say it again
Jacks career basically was during the time I was most-involved with the game as a fan, and his HOF-worthiness, imo, was NEVER in doubt.
But I'm not a number guy, Matt is.
This one really highlights the differences in the way we look at things.
No-brainer for me, a no-thinker even. Long period of time where if you let me choose one guy to start a must-win game, jack would have been that guy.
Even when his numbers weren't as eye-popping as most "great" pitchers, he was to me, a PLAYER you wanted involved, and if he was, his team was most-likely going to win.

Yeah, like those guys didn't do well in other stats. WAR and all of its derivatives takes the absurd approach of saying how many more games this guy won for you. It's totally absurd. Things like Tim Raines being #8 all time or Willie Stargell actually being a first baseman gives you a hint as to the accuracy of the stat. It's well and good to take the top performers of all time and try to use it to validate the stat, but it doesn't validate it at. Those guys will always score high. They have a ton of stats that say they will score high. When you move away from those guys with the obvious big numbers, WAR becomes less and less accurate. When you use it to rank the best of the best against each other it is the same thing because the difference between most of these guys is very small.

The one embarrassing note from Cooperstown .... Thome wasted several good seconds of time talking about Punto
yuck yuck patooey

That one brief mention has made me re-think completely how I look at him.
