Will be interesting to see who emerges from a solid Az fall league, especially with respect to catcher. Garver or Turner......Turner has great defensive skills and had a much better 2nd half at the plate.

And will also be interesting to see if Walker can hit and cut down on the K's.

And can Burdi become a more rounded pitcher......

Thanks for the fall league updates Ed.

I've seen the future and the future is Stuart Turner.
Best case would be as a back up.
I draft Catcher Round 1

Walker continuing to flash power. That's great news. We need to get Sano in the field somewhere so there's room for Walker as our future DH.

Time For New Challenge For Twins’ Lo

November 5, 2015 by Phil Miller

MINNEAPOLIS—
A lot has changed since righthander Kuo Hua Lo first arrived in Elizabethton, Tenn., deep in the Appalachian Mountains, to pitch for the Rookie-level Twins.

“Yeah, they have an Applebee’s now,” vice president for player personnel Mike Radcliff, said. “That was a big deal.”
By now, so is Lo, who has spent so much time in eastern Tennessee, he reportedly does a credible Southern accent—when not speaking his native Mandarin.

The 23-year-old Taiwan native, who signed for $125,000 in 2011, made his U.S. debut in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League in 2012. He then spent three summers in the Appy League, where in 2015 he held batters to a .146 average in 31 innings and racked up seven saves in seven opportunities.

It’s rare for a player to remain on a Rookie team for three years, but Lo wasn’t exactly stuck at Elizabethton, Radcliff said. The Twins just felt he was better off making the adjustment to a new country, a new language and a new profession before moving up the ladder. He’s now a baseball veteran who speaks relatively fluent English.

“He used to be mostly a low-90s fastball guy, but he’s got three pitches now, and he’s begun using his changeup as an out pitch,” Radcliff said. “He’s always been able to throw his fastball for strikes naturally, but his command of all three is impressive now.”

No kidding. Lo walked just eight batters, none of whom scored, while striking out 43, which was more than one-third of the hitters he faced. He allowed just five runs and 15 hits, posting a 1.44 ERA that made it clear he’s ready for more.

“It’s time to challenge him, no doubt. He’s got the stuff to move up pretty quickly,” Radcliff said. “We took it slow with him, but he looks ready for a lot more.”

TWIN KILLINGS

• The Twins outrighted catcher Eric Fryer and lefthander Aaron Thompson, both of whom spent most of the season at Triple-A Rochester, off the 40-man roster. Both cleared waivers and elected free agency as previously outrighted players.

• Lefthander Mat Batts, who went 15-7, 2.36 after being drafted in the 17th round in 2014, announced his retirement in a column in the Lexington (N.C.) Dispatch—the newspaper that also hired him as a reporter.

Stashak Starts Fast For Twins

October 28, 2015 by Phil Miller

MINNEAPOLIS—
Rookie-level Elizabethton righthander Cody Stashak was hit hard by Greeneville on Aug. 25, giving up seven runs on six hits while recording just five outs.

It was a blowout, an ambush, the worst night of Stashak’s budding pro career. Yet it only gave the Twins more optimism about the 21-year-old righthander.

“He pitched so well all summer, I mean really well, and you know he’s pitching with a lot of confidence,” vice president for player personnel Mike Radcliff said. “So when he gets hit a little bit, you see how he responds to it, and you see a little bit of the experience he has start to shine through.”

The Twins selected Stashak in the 13th round of the 2015 draft out of St. John’s, heeding the recommendation of veteran scout John Wilson that his three-pitch mix would translate well to the minor leagues, despite his lack of eye-catching velocity.

“He threw 90 (mph) in college, but we think there’s more in the tank than that,” Radcliff said. “But he can get outs without top-shelf stuff. He’s a pitchability guy, a really good one. He can miss bats without blowing it by you.”

Apparently so. Pitching for the Elizabethton, Stashak had 53 strikeouts and 11 walks in 45 innings. He went 5-2, 3.43 in 10 starts, and proved he possesses the command of pitchers a couple of levels higher.

“He doesn’t walk many guys, because he can throw all three pitches for strikes, especially his curveball,” Radcliff said. “At that level, it’s unusual for a guy to throw a breaking ball as an out pitch. Stashak shows you his fastball, but gets you with his breaking stuff.”

Radcliff senses he could rise quickly. “He’s already ahead of schedule,” he said.

TWIN KILLINGS

• High Class A Fort Myers set a new franchise record by drawing 133,817 fans to Hammond Stadium this season. The Twins renovated the facility mostly to enhance the spring-training experience for fans, but it also paid dividends in the Florida State League.

• Right fielder Oswaldo Arcia took a big step backward in 2015, batting just .199/.257/.372 after being demoted to Triple-A Rochester in April. “It was a disappointing year for him and for us,” general manager Terry Ryan said. “What that means for next year, that’s up to him. We haven’t closed any doors, but the competition for jobs is pretty stiff. He has to produce.”
