Twins’ Wade A Surprise Sensation

October 15, 2015 by Phil Miller

The draft is a game, that includes some guesswork after the first few rounds, so there’s no shame when a draft pick doesn’t work out the way scouts thought. And the Twins admit: They were wrong about LaMonte Wade.

“I wasn’t sure he could play center field, and didn’t think he’d show much power,” said Mike Radcliff, the Twins’ vice president for player personnel. “But LaMonte has outplayed his stock a little bit, no question. You love kids like this.”

Drafted in the ninth round after his junior year at Maryland, the 21-year-old outfielder settled into the third spot in Rookie-level Elizabethton’s lineup, and provided steady offense all season long. He hit eight doubles, five triples and nine home runs—more power than the Twins expected—while posting a .312/.428/.506 average in 231 at-bats.

“He’s a gap-power guy, but if he pulls it, it can get out,” Radcliff said. He also successfully stole 12 bases in 13 tries.

The reasons for his success quickly became clear, Radcliff said. “He’s got a direct, short (left-handed) stroke, just a natural swing. He hits the ball hard,” he said. “And he’s as focused a kid as you can find. He’s a great effort guy, very intense.”

A converted first baseman, he’s also impressed with his skills in the outfield. Wade’s speed was rated as average at best, but “he’s got great instincts. He takes really good routes,” Radcliff said, “so it doesn’t matter that he doesn’t have blazing speed. Again, his focus really helps him. He doesn’t look like a typical center fielder, but he makes it work.”

So well, in fact, that the Twins promoted Wade to low Class A Cedar Rapids for the season’s final week and playoffs, and he played a significant role in helping the Kernels reach the championship round.

2015 Draft Report Card: Twins

POSITION PLAYERS

BEST PURE HITTER: 3B Travis Blankenhorn (3) has athleticism, solid bat speed and a short, simple swing, although he also has enough power potential that he could end up developing in a power hitter who sacrifices average for pop. OF Lamonte Wade (9) understands the strike zone and projects as a solid average hitter.

» BEST POWER HITTER: 1B Kolten Kendrick’s (8) calling card is his plus-plus raw power. He missed a month with mono this summer after signing.

» FASTEST RUNNER: Wade, OF Lean Marrero (16) and OF Jaylin Davis (24) all have average speed. After the draft, the Twins signed Christian Cavaness, an athletic outfielder from Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) as a non-drafted free agent. Cavaness has 70 speed on the 20-to-80 scouting scale.

» BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER: 3B Trey Cabbage (4) has solid athleticism and the chance to be an average or better defender at third. Wade is a fringe-average center fielder who is above-average if he slides over to left field.

PITCHERS

BEST FASTBALL: LHP Tyler Jay (1) touched 98 mph regularly this spring and summer. LHP Alex Robinson (5) didn’t pitch much after signing but he sits 92-94 mph and touches 97. RHP Max Cordy (40) has touched 96 mph.

» BEST SECONDARY PITCH: Jay’s slider is a power pitch (88-90 mph) with tilt and depth. He commands it, believes in it and uses it as his strikeout pitch. It’s at least a 60 and some scouts have 70 grades on it. RHP Logan Lombana (25) also has an above-average 85-87 mph slider from a lower slot.

ODDS AND ENDS

BEST PRO DEBUT: Wade hit .314/.428/.506 for Rookie-level Elizabethton before struggling (8-for-35) after a promotion to low Class A Cedar Rapids. Wade’s Elizabethton teammate 1B Chris Paul (6) hit .302/.375/.488 in the Appy League, then went 20-for-79 as Cedar Rapids lost in the Midwest League finals.

» BEST ATHLETE: Cavaness played football for a year at Lindenwood before focusing on baseball. Blankenhorn played three sports in high school and scored 1,600 points in basketball.

» MOST INTRIGUING BACKGROUND: SS Sean Miller’s (10) father is an Astros scout who played in the minor leagues. Unsigned OF Tristan Pompey (31) is the younger brother of Blue Jays outfielder Dalton Pompey. Unsigned OF Tyler Williams (26) is the son of Twins’ scout Ted Williams.

» CLOSEST TO THE MAJORS: The Twins plan to try Jay as a starting pitcher, but he could fly through the system if they wanted to get him into the big league bullpen.

» BEST LATE-ROUND PICK: Lombana’s lower slot and quality secondary stuff makes him a potentially useful reliever. Senior sign C A.J. Murray (14) didn’t get to play catcher too much at Georgia Tech, but the Twins are seeing if he can stick at the position full-time.

» THE ONE WHO GOT AWAY: RHP Kyle Cody (2s) was a potential first-round pick after an excellent summer in the Cape Cod League, but he lost his spot in the weekend rotation. Cody decided to head back to Kentucky and try to improve his stock with a stronger senior season.

7-5 win for Scottsdale Wednesday

Walker 1-3/BB/2R HR(5)

Reed IP K/Save(3)

At this point

I'd rather MN gave Walker a DH / OF chance then blow 20 million on the overseas mirage.

Reed should get a shot at the bullpen

Tuesday they also won 5-4

Garver 1-3/R/PB

Walker has been among leaders in HRs and rBI's in the last 3 levels of ball, yet the Twins don't bump him up during the year, fearful that long swing won't work.

Yet he keeps on pounding the ball. Go figure.

Wouldn't it be awesome if he stepped up to the plate with his shirt pulled up and his hands up like Cornholio?

The KFAN morning show was hoping the B is silent YOUNGHO. Imagine if they signed him and YOANUS Cespedes. Those guys would have massive chubbies for months with all that bathroom humor they would be thinking (unwisely) they could use.

How and why do the Pohlad Brothers allow TR to spend money (their millions) so foolishly with absolutely no accountability whatsoever? I don't understand this at all. TR is el-cheapo when it comes to signing legitimate FA players. But he signs scrap heap FA players and long-shot foreign players to big money contracts like it is no big deal.

Apparently the Twins may sell Kennys Vargas' contract to a Japanese team to free up roster space for Bungholio.

Can't say I'm surprised. Disappointed, for sure.

Some fan asked Berardino about Pinto's future, and his response was something like

"In a different uniform"

So it appears the Twins are moving on from a couple of these guys.

They're putting a lot of stock in Bung hole.

But they have more DH types coming up the road.

Vargas and Pinto are 25 and 26 and have had a measure of success hitting major league pitching already. Bungholio is 29 and has played in a bandbox in Korea, where according to Jack Hannahan, the pitchers don't throw nearly as hard and never throw cutters and sinkers. So we are going to sell Vargas to a Japanese team and spend $20M to get Bungholio.

Terry Ryan, GO AWAY!!!
