Last year, the rationale was sound, I think. With the extra college eligibility years following covid, many draftniks had felt there was unusual depth after the top group of marquee prospects. Kwesi's draft-day execution left much to be desired, no doubt.

We are basically hobos and need to manufacture value. Draft a couple of injured players a round or two lower than where they might have gone. And a couple of low character types.

Richardson personifies the “boom or bust” moniker. His physical tools aren’t just the best among all quarterbacks in this class - they’re arguably the best since Cam Newton in 2011. He broke 39 tackles on 97 carries this season for 713 yards and couples that mobility with probably the strongest arm in the class. On the flip side, his accuracy is a major issue. Richardson’s 28.2% uncatchable pass rate over the last two seasons is the seventh-highest in the nation. He’s certainly a swing for the fences, but one worth taking given where the NFL game is headed.

Pros

Elite arm talent. Can really spin it.
Built like a tight end. Will get contacted in the pocket at times and it's like he doesn't even feel it.
Explosive in everything he does. A real threat to house it as a runner from anywhere on field.

Cons

Feet are all over the place. Adjusting at all in the pocket can cause him to miss wildly.
Such limited experience. Only 455 dropbacks in his college career.
Only lasers. Hasn't quite mastered the art of when to take something off a throw.

Where he WINS -- TOOLS
Richardson has one of the best combinations of arm strength, size and running abilty of any quarterback prospect in the PFF College era. Although he needs serious improvement as a passer, his rushing ability gives him a high floor.

What's his ROLE -- OFFENSIVE WEAPON
Richardson can expand a playbook in every way imaginable. You can draw up any run concept you want for him to tote the rock, and no downfield concept will be too deep for his arm to hit. If you're not getting him touches, even if he's a backup, you're missing out.

Where he can IMPROVE -- CONSISTENT FUNDAMENTALS
Richardson flashes "it“ - the ability to stand confidently in a tight pocket, put his cleats in the ground and deliver strikes down the field. But that too often all goes out the window when he's forced to adjust in the pocket and is left making his right arm do all the work.

Status: offline 		I wonder if there is some study about the quantity of QB carries in college translating to the pro level. Noticed the Tennessee QB had a similar number of rushes as Richardson. His carries against top teams were in double digits, while against the scrubs it was about 2-5 per game. Surmising the better defenses led him to take off running.

We're talking sort of upper second tier types so there will be limitations. We won't be vying for the top pick or top QB, so it is what it is. Just concerned pro defenses might lead them to run more and increase the risk of injury.

Take a flyer this year, it doesn't work out, trade up for Caleb Williams (or other franchise QB) next year.

Status: offline 		How about we finally bite the bullet and dump our high priced players and just frickin lose this next year. I'm so ready to suck until we get a top young QB. I've spent about 45 years watching us rebuild and sit around the middle. I'd be completely stoked if we win 1 game next year. I'd see it as way way closer to winning a championship. being good is no longer good enough and we keep pushing contracts back.

Status: offline 		Hooker's PFF blurb, who they have as the #6 QB prospect with a 3rd round grade:

Hooker led the nation’s second-most efficient offense this season in terms of EPA per play, and he’s grown tremendously as a passer since his days at Virginia Tech. Hooker’s passing grade improved from a 71.5 mark in 2020 to 85.4 this last season. Unfortunately, most of his negatives are outside his control. Josh Heupel’s no-huddle, go-ball-heavy scheme makes it easy for quarterbacks to shine. Also, Hooker tore his ACL in November and is older than quarterbacks who are about to embark on their second contracts, such as Jalen Hurts and Justin Herbert.

pros
Gorgeous deep-ball thrower. Knows how to adjust angles to get it coming down in the bread basket.
Continuous year-on-year improvement that's easy to buy into. Student of the game.
Has to be accounted for as a runner. Turns into a running back in the open field.

cons
Gimmicky Tennessee offense.
Tore ACL in November and turned 25 years old in January.
Breaks the pocket to run, not pass. Only five completions all season when moved off his dropback spot.

Where he wins -- tools
Hooker ticks all the boxes you could possibly want physically at the quarterback position. Maybe he isn't quite as elite as others in this class in certain regards, but it's certainly all there.

What's his role -- high-end developmental QB
Hooker's offense at Tennessee puts him behind the eight-ball in a big way.

Where he can improve -- keeping eyes downfield
Hooker is a tremendous passer when he's standing tall at the top of his drop and throwing in rhythm. Too often when that pocket starts to collapse and he has to move, though, Hooker flips the switch from quarterback to runner. He hasn't yet mastered subtle pocket movements to reset his feet and continue to work the called concept.

FWIW, PFF has him rated 317th on their big board. The 14th QB.

There are only 260 picks in the draft, so drafting him at all would be a major reach if PFF's grades are to be believed.

Sign him as a UFA as you want, but spending a 3rd or 4th on him should get you fired.

Watched a short highlight reel of his and he looks like Lamar Jackson with a more accurate arm.
