I don't see the 49ers risking not having a viable backup unless they are getting a significant return...meaning a lot more than we just got to give JJM to the Giants.

It would clearly cost a lot more than a 5th to get Jones. He's actually a functioning NFL QB.

If you meet their asking price, you're pretty much saying that you plan to resign Jones long-term as your guy. And that's pretty scary for a guy who is remarkably mediocre.

After the 2027-28 season, it becomes somewhat palatable - but he still has a 71M cap hit for the 2028 season.

That's the issue. It's like he may help to salvage the season but then what? Signing him long term almost precludes you from moving up to draft a QB even around spot #15 because one of those expensive assets will have to sit. Plus you're down a pick or whatever for getting him in the first place.

One scenario: you get lucky and they take a 3rd and the 5th from the Giants. He plays ok. Not a world beater but not someone you want to break the bank over. You think we'll draft someone. Meanwhile the clock keeps ticking and Jones hits free agency. If the regime is ok with a possible rental, they might give it a go. But I think he will cost more than a 3rd and a 5th.

Or he plays lights out. Is the assumption he is the real thing (vs a flash in the pan) worth risking handing over big bucks? Because if he reverts back to being a low end starter/solid backup, you've set the team back several more years.

It's really sad how good "remarkable mediocrity" sounds compared to what we have.
