According to the Elias Sports Bureau, J.J. McCarthy is 1 of 4 first-round QBs in the past 25 years to start 10 or fewer games for the team that drafted them. The others:

Paxton Lynch
Trey Lance
Johnny Manziel

Maybe after seeing how bad Murray was yesterday the regime knew the calls for JJM were going to grow and it would be a distraction. It would be interesting to know the inner workings and thoughts.

Most likely, it was just a case that JJM was not Nolan Teasley's guy and rumors are he wasn't really KOCs guy either. They got an offer and they took it. I think if they had just held on for one more week, they may have been able to coax a conditional 4th rounder out of the Giants....

JMO.

I still don't think it a terribly wise move, considering Murray's play and the remaining options on the roster....JJM has the most potential upside. Now we have a QB that has not looked good, a career aging and imobile backup, and an undrafted free agent that look lost in is opportunities last year. I am MORE uncomfortable now with our QB situation than I was just two weeks ago.

Just a Gemini ask.

What FA QBs are out there:

Jimmy Garoppolo is the top name still available among free-agent QBs, along with mostly depth/backup options like Jake Browning, Brandon Allen, Kyle Trask, Clayton Tune, Brett Rypien, Chris Oladokun, and Bailey Zappe (as of late September 2026 updates).

These guys don't fit the bill of developmental QB.

Milton or Levis would be my choice. Brosmer should be cut.

I'd grab Milton right now. Raw, but has ridiculous tools and has looked good in limited action.

Murray is a bum. Throws directly into DLinemen far too often and his deep ball is just "chuck it as far as he can and hope for the best". Addison bailed him out twice on horrible throws and should've had the easiest TD ever if the ball wasn't a good 5+ yards short (and he still almost caught it by coming back and fighting through a DB).

He has happy feet and looks indecisive. He's never going to master KOC's "system" and KOC apparently has no idea how to call plays out of the shotgun.

At this point is KOC just "what if Leslie Frazier had Brian Flores"?

Tha, you, Odin..

Cut bait with the coward who is soo chi,dish..

He might do better with a different coach, but officially, KOC as “ qb whisperer “ is DOA on any roster.

If we go on a losing streak, say 5-6 games, his job here is gone.

We are 3-0. A Top 10 team and you are thinking about 5-6 game losing streaks. Come on.

Dan, what you and I can probably agree on is Teasley doesn't see a QBOTF on this roster.

What would you think of CJ Stroud if Houston's season continues to tank?

Texans wont give up on Stroud. Not for cheap. He will cost a minimum of 1 first round pick.

As for the losing streak....with this defense it would be unlikely, but with this offense as it currently sits....it is possible.

Didn't you just chuckle at the TB cornerback doing the sword thing after getting beat by 5 yards?

NOOOOOO to Milton (and Levis).

Roll with these two for the remainder of the season and see what you can get next year....

If there were a viable option out there for an affordable amount of pay, the Giants would NOT have traded for JJM. It's that simple. I can't believe that the Viking FO is done here. I don't know what they can do at this point, but I can say that our current QB situation does not make me feel any better than last year right now.

When the BEST QB on your roster is Carson Wentz...

Yikes.

We could be in trouble. Nolan Teasley must have a plan in place here, or they are seeing a vast improvement in Max Brosmer from the debacle that was 2025 or something.

I just have a bad feeling that this is going to backfire on us big time.

Trading JJM was a surprise. Makes me wonder what's going on with Murray struggling and Wentz looking like no more than a good backup. Perhaps a big trade in the works for Mac Jones.

Exactly. Nobody out there is going to end up starting and even game manage the team to victories.

Instead, go find a developmental type.

Its interesting timing. Leaves us with 2 terrible and injury-prone QBs (instead of 3 terrible and injury-prone QBs...)

Could there be another trade coming? Mac Jones?

Did KOC just hate JJM?

Is JJM uncoachable?

Interesting that a Harbough traded for him. I know NY had rumored interest in him in his draft, and they clearly need a QB. But did Jim recommend JJ to John? And if so, does he really believe in him, or does he still have "Nation championship blinders" about the kid?

I like Milton. He can definitely see over our line and has plenty of mobility when KOC's offense inevitably breaks down and/or puts him in tough positions.

Isaiah Rodgers. He was targeted 5 times and allowed one reception for one yard. He also had three stops and the interception to end the game.

He's off to a really good start.

I am getting a bad feeling about this.

Murray's play has been at best anemic and uninspired. Wentz just isn't a starter and Now our third stringer is Max Brosmer....

Not saying things were much better with JJM but, yeesh.

Will be an interesting press conference at noon with KOC.

Why? KOC isn't going to reveal anything. It will be the typical give him a fresh start, saw an opportunity for all concerned, blah, blah.

Exactly. KOC has never had an interesting press conference. He put Common to sleep last week!

People way overthinking this. To me it was pretty clear.

A lof of scouts had JJ as 2nd to 3rd round pick.

The Vikings overreacted on a guy who was successful in college, but had very limited tape and was in a run first system.
The physical tools piqued their interest, and probably sealed the deal in their mind he was worthy of a high pick.

but we all saw Kwesi and Grigson high fiving each other. This was their guy. Kwesi got fired.
They are BOTH gone.

You had to make a decision now, because you were not going to pay JJ's 5th year optino. No way, no how.

Vikings media will spend way more time talking about this than the national media will.

Think about this for a second. The Vikings found zero interest from teh rest of the league....zero. Not even Jim Harbaugh. He wants nothing to do wiht him in the pros.
Giants need a back up sorely.

Kyler will be fine. 1 game in coming off a serious concussion. i figured the frist SEVERAL games would be rough.

Two posts above mention a trade for Mac Jones. That scenario fits WRT to the lack of QB talent on the roster. Have they already seen enough of Murray to seek an upgrade via a trade?

But then are they hitching the wagon to Mac Jones?

At the same time, trading JJM doesn't really move the needle as far as the QB room goes. Bring in another boom/bust guy right now and things are the same tomorrow as they were early this morning.

Looking to the draft, the 3-0 start doesn't help in terms of massing resources for a top QB. Although it's not that bad in relative terms because trading up is so expensive to do anyway.

Absolutely!

How about Kyle Van Noy?
I was expecting a break in case of emergency guy... he had a BIG impact yesterday... defense is just humming.

FIND A F"ING QB!

Why would we give up on JJM and risk him panning out with another team? I think JJM was still years away from development and the Vikings have a win now team needing a solid QB that fits KOC's offense. The Mac Jones trade idea could give us the win now QB that fits our offense.

I doubt SF would trade him after their good start. They were rumored to be interested in Herbert too but I just don’t see that either.
The timing of this trade is so weird.

He's a UFA after the year and they won't pay to keep him. They might be tempted by a solid offer.
