I'd rather discus what a QB did to win the game than discus what he didn't do to lose it. A good QB finds a way to win that game on Sunday. We have offensive weapons that make most other teams in the NFL jealous. Use them. Throw the ball downfield further than three yards. Throw your receiver open once in a while. TAKE A CALCULATED CHANCE WHEN THE GAME IS ON THE LINE.

Cousins looked out of synch but he was not the reason we lost.

How many dipshit penalties.

How about a fumble in OT when we were in FG range to win it. (Granted I think is ass was on the ground before the ball came out but in the end you have one job there....don't fumble).

We had a very good chance to win this despite being down big early in the second half.

Cousins was not the reason, nor even a reason we lost. could he have been better? Always. Tom Brady could have been better in the Superbowl.

But let's focus on what sucked really bad in this game.

1 Rashod Hill was getting abused. Chandler Jones may get 10 sacks next week.

2. Brashad Breeland was getting targeted. They never threw to Patrick Petersons side of the field...why? because Breeland sucked.

3. PENALTIES, Drive killing penalties. FIVE false starts and only one of them on an Olineman. Holding putting us in big holes

4. Playcalling. Dear God we need 20 yards why the holy **** are you throwing a three yard dump pass? The play needs to be much closer to the sticks, you can't expect anyone to get 17 yards running after the catch on this team.

Unless his name is K (wait for it) J (wait for it) Osborn.

Well that's part of the issue isn't it?

One miraculous check-down works and justifies the 15 other no-chance-checkdowns on third and long. At least Osborne was a WR in single coverage and the back shoulder pass gave him some room to do something ...

I get Cook as the outlet in the middle of the field with his back to the defense ... he can turn and make something happen even if he's bracketed by LBs. I get WRs raking across the field in front of defenders just short of the first down.

Standing anybody else up in the middle or near the sideline 15 yards short of a first down, much less coming back to the QB ... much less Conklin or Ham ... is just giving up on a first down. Don't have an outlet ... keep them in to help block or something ... I don't know.

EDIT: yup too much

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/14/2021 9:00:48 PM)

That's nice.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/14/2021 9:20:41 PM)

Just watched highlights of the 4 teams in the division, and the Vikings look like the best team in the division.

The Vikings easily could have won their game, and be sitting alone in 1st place. But they're in 1st anyway.

Technically ... you are discussing exactly what you are trying not to discuss.

No, he didn't make the game winning play himself obviously but, with the game on the line, Cousins DID make the plays necessary to win the game.

Talking about the plays he did not make earlier in the game are secondary.

Otherwise, I totally agree, he lacks the vision or boldness or whatever it is to make something happen out of nothing .. to even try (usually). Frustrating.

I was just taking my opportunity to sing the praises of a guy who looked kind of like a lost cause last year while all of a sudden looks like a viable and potentially fairly dangerous third receiver. Which going into the season was certainly one of the spots considered very iffy.

No question he was one of the bright spots.

that loss in cincinnati is on zimmer and spielman...how can a gm be so incredibly phucking dumb as to watch his o-line fail season after season and do nothing productive to fix it?...how can a meat-head caveman head coach run the same failed plays over and over again...how can he think that it's okay not to dress rehearse your starting team in the preseason at least one quarter in each game?....

if managed properly, the Vikings would have beaten the bengals by 17 points last Sunday - but we're just too lost as an organization to execute that into reality....

Can't argue with this. Couple that with a perrennial brutal oline makes it tough to watch.

Most of the things this regime does make little sense. Esp signing Cousins (a qb that needs max protect) and you continue to go cheap on the oline. Paying Cousins that much money is one thing, but not protect that investment was like doubling down on stupid.

They invested 2 firsts and 2 seconds and a third in the most recent drafts....not sure I agree that they aren't investing in oline...I would say that Spielman was late to the party on investing but they have invested heavily recently on Oline.

If you draft a Bradbury #1 and he’s not working out, you don’t credit for that investment UNLESS you react to the bad pick by signing competition / someone better. If you draft a Cleveland 2nd and plug him into G where he’s struggling, you are not optimizing your draft pick. If you draft a Darrisaw #1 and he misses traing camp / start of season and all you do is fall back on backups instead of signing or trading for competition / someone better [than Hill Brandel] … you have not adequately addressed the line.

You don’t get credit for spending capital - no matter how much - if the product sucks.

That isn't what was said...rapto said they went cheap on Oline. 2nd and 1st round picks aren't cheap; the new contract to O'Neal isn't cheap.

Getting Davis and Darrisaw playing asap is the key to improving the line. If Bradburry is the weak link even as a 1st rounder get rid of him but I give him somewhat of a pass until you get Davis in there and Darrisaw at LT.

Darrisaw was supposed to be healthy and soon will be...Davis will be in soon too. Long season.

A below average oline (bordering on terrible) has been a staple of this regime.

Some can argue regarding some higher draft picks being used the last 4 years but the results on the field speak for themselves.

This is the heart of the matter. Spielman has spent significant draft capital on the o-line in recent years. He just wouldn't know a good o-line prospect if one knocked him on his ass.
