We just need to land the #1 pick in the draft in a year where you can get a generational QB like Burrow or Lawrence. Just like you can only have 1 champ, only one gets the #1 pick and that type of QB might be there what 20% of the time? I would have liked to see more QBOTF be looked at in the past couple of years. I never liked Mond at A&M, and would have liked to see them look at a few other options. Too bad if they had known Mond wasn't worth keeping last April, perhaps they take a chance on Purdy or even Baily Zappe in the draft.

I'm so jealous of the Bears.

They did exactly what I wanted the Vikings to do this year.

They hired the GM I was hoping for, Poles, with a football background not a Wall street analytics suit. Kwesi's #1 job is talent acquisition, he brought in Hockensen mid season and got lucky getting Z. Smith on a cheap contract, that's about it other than overpaying long in the tooth vets. Oh and a punter

They realized they were more than a year away and traded some of their valuable soon to be overpaid assets for future draft picks while resting nicked up starters getting younger players experience. All of this helping to get the #1 draft slot in each round plus extra picks from trades and with a young QB and they have boatload of cap space.

Their biggest problem is what to do with the number 1 overall? Keep Fields and trade down and get a ton more picks or trade Fields and draft the highest rated QB in a strong class.

I think they are going to be the team to beat in the North for a while. Hope I'm wrong.

Have you seen Fields play?
Amazing athlete but mostly 1 read and run...
Oh, and shocker... he got injured running.
They could easily be starting over AGAIN in a couple of years.

(I want a young stud QB too... but I don't know that Chi has it)

They can trade Fields. They can keep Fields and draft the best QB prospect in the draft and have a competition. Trade the other. They have a ton of options.

I'd much rather be the Bears. They also have a ton of cap space.

I don't love it... but it is what it is

Nonsense. It was totally arbitrary. The guys arm glanced against him. One could even say that Cousins forced the contact.

I would have called the late hit earlier in the game where he was pushed over backwards after a throw way before the glance on the facemask.

Totally dodged my statement.
If you hit the QB in the helmet it's a 50/50 call... intent and ridiculous "forced the contant" don't matter.
it wasn't a great call
most of the roughing the qb calls these days suck
it was hardly egregious
it's a common call

That is the way the rule is written. The refs still don't call it every time, so it's arbitrary.

It was a bail out, plain and simple. If it hadn't been called, very few would have said a word.

You could call holding on every play, the way it is written. It doesn't mean they do.

Lars -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/16/2023 9:58:34 AM)

My $0.02:

The 2022 Vikes were going to come to screeching halt here any week, it just happened to be yesterday.

They provided more excitement and wins than I hoped for at the beginning of the year. I never had any SB expectations, so this was just a fun ride for a flawed team that outperformed.

The area that really stunk yesterday was the play of both safeties. They were out of position, over pursuing, poor tackling, etc. the ILB didn't fair much better.

The throw short of the sticks sucks, but Cousins is not the problem (at least not yesterday). With an average defense, MN wins that game going away yesterday.

Time to cut bait on a lot over overpriced veterans and move on. I'm not gonna wring hands and gnash teeth until I see what happens.

But tonight, I am a Bucs fan! **** the Cowpukes.

Super envious of draft capital and cap space.
They'll be able to add a ton of talent next year (and they need it).
But they aren't going to trade Fields any time soon... which puts them in a similar boat as the Vikes... limited by QB

They're in a good position draft wise, cap space and they don't have Ryan Pace to mess it up. But they're devoid of talent for the most part. Horrendous OLine, below avg receivers, no DLine. They've got some talent in the back 7 and at RB. Lets see how this GM does, he's already made one terrible trade for Claypool.

It was too a blow to the head. His arm came down and clubbed Cousins on the face mask before he tackled him. It wasn't intentional or malicious, but it's going to get called almost every time.

Huh? That team has massive holes all over the roster. The draft is not going to magically turn them into a SB contender.

it was not a horrible call...was it a bad call...maybe, i would even go so far as probably

but it wasnt awful

those types of questionable calls happen every game

overall i thought the refs were pretty reasonable, of course, there were some missed calls, just like some missed catches, everybody is human...except maybe robot kirk

In the end the refs weren't noticed much. That's a good thing.

Neither were our safeties.

I'm trying to remember them being noticed. The only thing that comes to mind is Bynum running up and the guy running by him with ease.

Bynum sucks.

I'm not saying it'll all work out for them, I just prefer their approach and it's what I wanted us to do. I think they are set up better than us for potential long term success in the near future. I also like what Detriot is doing, even with the Hockenson trade. I do like our head coach more but he needs to coach the whole team, including defense if he's to succeed, he can't just hand it over to a Donashell type.

It was a bullshit bailout.

No it wasnt Brad. They enforced the rule as its written. QB takes a forearm to the head, they throw the flag almost every time. It doesn't matter whether it was intentional. If you don't like it take it up with the rules committee.

Nonsense. It's arbitrary. I saw 15 hits this weekend on quarterbacks that were far more egregious that weren't called. Heck, there was a late hit on Cousins that was way worse earlier in the game where his head pounded on the field after being pushed over backwards after a throw. I would have called that one way before the one that was called.

It is not arbitrary Brad. It's the rule. It's been the rule for years. I've seen much lighter and more incidental blows to the head than that called. Hit the QB in the head and it's 15 yards. It's almost automatic.

Stop it, I don't see how it's awful call. Was it a soft/ticky-tack call? Probably. But when you see the QB's helmet come down on contact there's a good chance the flag is thrown.

The reffing was fine, there were a few calls like usual. Especially the missed false start and an illegal contact on the Giants final TD drive that were misses. Credit the Giants offense for dealing with crowd noise. They had what 1 pre snap penalty all game.

???
I saw a tweet about what Drew Brews did with bottom 4 defenses versus top 10 defenses. What the team did with its limitations this year was amazing.

Tear the defense down and include Thielen and Cook in that tear down. You have 2 OT, JJeff, and TJ which is too much young talent to go in full rebuild mode. JJeff is generational and TJ isn't far behind.

Rob Viking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/16/2023 10:35:15 AM)

I don't think there is alignment with KOC and Donashell. I remember an announcer speaking with KOC about Donashell and continuously testing him on his defense. Stating if I (KOC) was going up against your Donashell defense this is how I would attack it. I appreciate KOC having these conversation with his DC, but it seems clear he doesn't trust the Donashell scheme.

Or are they satisfied with just being competitive but fizzling out every year?

By continuing to trot Kirk out there I'm going with the latter.

Come on Phil. This team is going nowhere with Kirk. Him continuing to qb the Vikings is just a monumental waste of time. Yes I know the defense sucks. However this team is spinning its wheels until hes gone.

not terribly unexpected, but at least it wasnt embarrassing.

to me, it felt like the keenum year...fun, but not enough to win it all, so just enjoy the run...enjoy the wins, the catch, etc...

defense was too much of a liability for me to buy in all year.

keenum year without a minneapolis miracle

I certainly try to tell myself just enjoy it, it's not a big deal, but man really frustrating to see other organization who haven't won a Super Bowl building towards giving themselves chances like Cincy and Jax. Hell, I even love the young team Detroit has.

You are going to problem number 15 if not 20 on the list of this years issues...we are a 5 win team w/o Kirk this year.

Kirk will be here next year. The #1 issue is the 31st ranked defense but you can keep hammering on Kirk...[sm=Beating_A_Dead_Horse_by_livius.gif]

JC2022 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/16/2023 10:42:56 AM)

QUOTE: The offense will be criticized for how this game ended. Justin Jefferson caught just one pass for 4 yards during the second half, with the Giants finding ways to double-team him out of the contest. Kirk Cousins was able to find his other receivers for most of the game, but on the final fourth down of the season, he threw a pass well short of the sticks to a covered T.J. Hockenson, who was tackled easily for an anticlimactic ending.

More noticeably, this was a game in which the Vikings simply didn't appear to have many defensive solutions for what the Giants planned to do. Minnesota somehow combined the worst of both worlds, spending most of the game in conservative zone coverage and still managing to give up a remarkable amount of rushing yards to Jones.

Given that the Vikings had just played the Giants in December and were going up against an offense that has relied heavily on Jones' ability as a scrambler, it was remarkable to see how unprepared they looked during the first half of the game. The pass rush didn't stay disciplined enough to prevent Jones from escaping the pocket, and he was able to get the edge far too easily. Coach Brian Daboll mixed in steady doses of Jones on designed runs before halftime. His 8.9 rushing EPA was comfortably the most of any player, quarterback or otherwise, of wild-card weekend.

Jones, who led the league in QBR over the final month of the regular season, posted a 91.9 QBR against the Vikings in zone coverage on Sunday, per ESPN's automated coverage analysis. The Vikings were seemingly trying to take away the big play, but they were playing an offense that throws the shortest average passes in the league. Jones was happy to dink and dunk his way down the field with accurate throws.
