Another low passing day for Sam in a big game, but the run game and defense bailed him out.

You can have him.

I didn't see much of the game, but did see Sam scramble out of the pocket and run for a few yards instead of getting sacked on one play. It was good to see him do that.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/4/2026 10:43:49 AM)

I would be willing to bet an even money bet that Brian Flore's stays with the Vikings this off season.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/4/2026 11:25:10 AM)

Much easier to build a total team when you have a really awesome WR who's on a rookie deal versus a 37 million dollar man. They have a real line and running game. SD's stat line is down across the board. He's driving the car well but he's not the reason they are hosting it all.

Silly comments. Darnold went 20-of-26 in a massive game. Lots of pinpoint throws when they needed them.

The guy is 28-6 as a starter the past two regular seasons. You can look at history and find very few quarterbacks to ever have that kind of success over two years. He's got one No. 1 seed and played for another last season.

At $33-million, he's the steal of the last free agency period.

I thought Sam Dilfer played a good safe game against a decimated 49ers defense.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/4/2026 3:14:40 PM)

I didn't see much of the game Brad, was going by the low output of scoring. I heard one of the running backs for Seattle had a long run, and the other back scored their only TD. I shouldn't have assumed Darnold was once again holding their offense back.

I guess the Vikings could have taken a chance on Sam, and hoped everything fell into place around him. He wasn't horrible, until the last 2 games.

After the glorious winning streak, picking at #18.

Sucks because probably takes us out of the Love or Downs sweepstakes.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/4/2026 3:31:47 PM)

Dilfer is a Super Bowl winner.

Sam does have arguably the best defense in the NFL, if you go by points against, which is how I like to rank them, but would consider changing that if another team played a way tougher schedule.

Sam was horrible in the clutch for the Vikings last year, he hasn't been horrible for Seattle, he's been serviceable.

Could be, but it wouldn't be a big surprise to see a safety drop to #18. And then the 1st mock draft I look at has:

18. Minnesota Vikings – Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame
Maybe this seems a little late for Love to hear his name called given that he has a strong case to be seen as one of this class' top five players. Yet for all the legitimate concerns of the positional value and limitations of running backs, the all-purpose RB shapes up as the kind of consistent big-play threat for whom teams will pay a significant premium

Not in the least. Kwesi has a glut of picks from 2026, 2027 and 2028 if he needs to move up a spot.

What, last night didn't count? That was a monster game. The exact same scenario as last season. What will it take for you guys to respect him?

Two brand new teams. Two new systems with two new coordinators and two new rosters. 28-6

Darnold looked great. Period! The kicker missed two kicks and the coach made a ridiculous 4th down attempt on the opening drive or they would have won by three touchdowns.

The defense allowed 3 points. Add to that the Niners defense is garbage. I would expect the Seahawks to win by at least 3 tds if the defense only gives up 3 points. If they keep playing defense like that Sam can easily get them to the Super Bowl. I'm actually hoping he does well.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/4/2026 9:08:56 PM)

Leading his offense to an early lead, 2 TDs, in a playoff game would certainly garner some respect for Sam.

IF Seattle's defense had a bad day in a playoff game, and Sam led his offense to keep up in a shootout, scoring 28 points or more, that would get respect.

A comeback victory in a playoff game, or a road win in a playoff game (but that won't happen this season) would be recognized.

IF Sam were to win a Super Bowl with Seattle, it would not only bring respect, it would make some Viking fans jealous, and wish we had taken a chance and kept him.

One playoff performance in the next few weeks, like he had in Minnesota, and every Vikings fan will breath a sigh of relief, be glad we were willing to take a step backwards with McCarthy, and hopeful towards the Vikings winning the Super Bowl with McCarthy.

Any other ideas for what would garner respect for Sam amongst Viking fans ?

And there are 3-4 CBs that are supposedly (who knows) good prospects and a couple could be in the #18 range.

I don't trust Kwesi with pick 1, 9 or 18 so, unless we get a new GM, I think we're screwed, regardless of draft position.

Hire the recently fired Atlanta GM as Asst GM....they fired him but he has hit on a ton of picks. He just hired the wrong coach.

I also read how much Denver has hit on picks since they hired our former Asst GM (Paton).

Rob Viking -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/5/2026 9:28:48 AM)

What an incredible 5 gam win streak. Beating on the dregs of the league, D puffing their chests out vs inept QBs. The performance vs the Lions was impressive but the Lions were mentally out of it. Getting a glimpse of JJ with nothing truly concrete. I really couldn't think of a worse 5 game sin streak to close out the season. And to think had Dallas had a normal home town clock operator yesterday's game could have been for a playoff spot.

Now the 18th pick. That knocks them out of taking Caleb Downs unfortunately. But there's a cluster of corners like AJ Terrel's bro, along with LB Sonny Styles (not a need perse but it might be in 2 years) and Sadiq the TE from Oregon. Another question mark over the years is who coaches the DBs? I feel like corner has always been a need save for some Xavier Rhodes seasons.

The 9-8 regression to the mean Vikes.

Just going off history, KAM is better later in the 1st round. No temptations to make some boneheaded trade. Just pick best player available.

I'm liking that Cincy is keeping Taylor. I thought that would be a good fit for Flores.

Raiders might be someone who would go after him but I'm hoping they go offensive coach to go with new QB they will draft.

Terrell or Sadiq would be a BPA/need combo.

Downs would be great but I like what Ward has shown. CB a bigger need.

Yes to both posts, good ideas re TE. Hock is a failure, especially with a $45M cap hit over the next two years. There are collegiate and pro TEs running rampant through defenses and we have t-rex arms dramatically spinning during every catch. If Qweasy renegotiates with him, expect another phantom back injury. Just get rid of him and bring in a modern era TE.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/5/2026 10:40:54 AM)

From ESPN:

Minnesota Vikings
2025 record: 9-8
Final FPI ranking: No. 27
Estimated 2026 cap space: minus-$58.1 million
2026 first-round draft pick: No. 18

What is their top offseason priority? Figure out the J.J. McCarthy conundrum. He had a mostly brutal first season as the Vikings' starter and the team must decide whether to give him another season, acquire a replacement or pair him with a veteran backup who could take over if he fails to make progress.

The brutal takeaway: A bottom feeding 27th ranking, way on the wrong side of the cap, major questions at QB. The trifecta for firing a GM. And throw in a middling first round draft slot,
