I’d gladly bring Cousins back. For a large salary cut, and under the right set of conditions laid out to him from the start, unlike what Atlanta did to him.

Not likely though.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (12/31/2025 11:47:18 AM)

The Vikings 2025 quarterback play has been unacceptable

Whether JJ McCarthy plays Week 18 or not, his 2025 performance leaves major questions for the Vikings this offseason

As the season is set to come to an end with the Vikings playing the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad in Week 18, whether Vikings QB JJ McCarthy plays or not should not matter to the final evaluation of his season. If he does suit up, it’s a preseason game. If he lights up the Packers, ask Matt Flynn how much that really matters. Or Drew Lock cooking the Colts for 309 and four touchdowns last year. Or Jarrett Stidham throwing for 365 and three TDs vs. the 49ers in 2023. Or Davis Mills posting 301 and three TDs versus Tennessee in 2022 and on and on.

The evaluation of his 2025 season should end with the first half of the game against the Giants.

The Numbers

If we look at his 8.5 games, the Vikings appear to be eons away from being able to hang in a game like the one Williams played against Purdy.

Here’s how McCarthy’s number stack up to the rest of the NFL after 17 weeks:

— 35th of 35 in passer rating (min. 200 attempts)

— 34th of 44 in adjusted completion percentage for drops (PFF)

— 29 of 32 in points added by QB (ESPN)

— 31st of 32 in ESPN’s QBR stat

— 4th worst in pressure to sack rate (PFF)

— 3rd worst in sack percentage

— Worst in INT percentage

Troy Aikman was 0-11 his 1st year of starting, how did his numbers look that season ?

No part of the careers of those QBs - or any other - has any bearing on JJM's stats, performance, W/L record, or meaningful football metric this season or beyond.

No QB has ever benefitted more from the talent around him than Aikman.

165 TDs, 141 INTs.

23 was his career high for TDs - the only year he had more than 19.

Manning joined a 3-13 team. Took them to 13-3 in his 2nd year and was runner up MVP.

McCarthy joined a 14-3 team that was set up for a QB to thrive.

Yes record wise but it wasn't a dominant team.......did you think we were a dominant team last year?

I think its foolish to expect a Manning like trajectory from anyone.

The point wasn't the trajectory---his first year was the point. Even the best qbs struggle.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/2/2026 10:37:35 AM)

I didn't realize Aikman threw so many picks, most of them must have come his 1st year, and then the years after Jimmy Johnson left and talent was broken up

I don't care whether or not JJ puts up great stats, I just want him to win a Super Bowl or two.

JJ has shown potential, he just needs to keep progressing, and to stay healthy.

Manning still showed a lot more signs than McCarthy his first year. He also had way more history as a passer in college.

Peyton was a generational prospect, JJ was not.

I'm not saying give up on JJ, but maybe more look for more reasonable comparisons than a Top 5 All-Timer.

Again....were we a dominant team except for QB? That is the part I am debating the most.

Yes.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/2/2026 11:00:22 AM)

I Disagree and here is why:

Peyton
Year 22 26 TDs 28 Ints 3-13 (Marshall Faulk, Marvin Harrison, and Marcus Pollard)
Year 23 26 TDs 15 Ints 13-3 (Edge James, Marvin Harrison, and Marcus Pollard)
Year 24 33 TDs 15 Ints 10-6
Year 25 26 TDs 23 Ints 6-10

Elway
Year 23 4-6 7 TDs 14 Ints (Steve Watson)
Year 24 12-2 18 TDs 15 Ints (Steve Watson
Year 25 11-5 22 TDs 23 Ints (Steve Watson)

Peyton 32-32 record first 4 years. Jon Elway didn't have as much talent and had more success early but he also was benched in his first year.

Our expectations are more Elway like than Peyton.....both ended up with 2 SB but Elway was in 6 SB I believe?

Now do every QB that struggled his first year and never got much better.

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/3/2026 11:18:39 AM)

Souhan did a column a while back that contained an impressive list of HOF QBs who had miserable rookie seasons. Then there was the added context that this is no assurance that McCarthy will turn the corner in a profound way. There is a much longer list of QB who sucked as rookies and continued to suck for the duration of their brief careers.

Injuries have left many questions about McCarthy, not the least of which is can he stay healthy. In his favor is that a win tomorrow would make him 6-4. He has shown some propensity for late game drives. He isn't afraid of the moment. His numbers have been somewhat hurt by the drop virus that is rampant in his receivers. On the negative, his mechanics are still a mess. He still struggles with layered throws. He struggles with timing on screen plays.

We can only wait and see what an off-season dedicated to fixing mechanics and football workouts rather than rehab will affect him. McCarthy has a long way to go, but I'm not ready to write him off after has first year at age 22.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/3/2026 12:31:54 PM)

IMO, a lot of it falls on KOC's shoulders too. He just recently dumbed down the offense to help the kid out. They tried to fix the OLine but it was clear, early on, that injuries made that another huge problem again. He tried calling the exact same plays/gameplan with a 22 YO kid and a broken offensive line.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/3/2026 12:59:32 PM)

McCarthy seems like he has the 'it' factor, he is willing to work hard, and I believe he will improve rapidly from this season to next season.

It's easier to take something off a pass, than it is to work with a QB that doesn't have the arm strength to make tough throws.

I also love the fact that McCarthy has mobility, and that KOC seems to have worked through his stubbornness, and is now starting to realize the importance of a dunk and dunk game, quick hitters, short passes, and running the ball, while also using his creativity in play calling for plays like the successful sweep, or whatever it was called to Addison.
