I think there isn't much doubt we win today. How we do it is a different matter.

In the past once we get any type of lead our squad seems to go into a "let's not do anything to lose this" mentality.

Today is an excellent opportunity to develop the attacking mentality we are missing. Cleveland has a good defense and will test us.

However, our defense should stomp these guys all day. If it's third quarter and the game announcers are telling us what a great QB Hoyer is,(AKA Rick Mirer, Jim Miller, several backup Lions QBs) we are in real trouble this season.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/22/2013 7:41:48 PM)

That's why I said JC, lose to the Browns, and 0-16 is really a possibility.

I think the Vikes would be 3-0 right now if they had had Winfield in the lineup. However, a good start would have just continued to mask the weakness at QB, where they are now headed towards a more drastic change.

It's now a competition with Jax for the 1st pick in the draft.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/25/2013 10:21:25 PM)

Hoping to get more than 4 right this week. Going with the 49ers over the Rams.

Let's get this party started. I've seen enough to make my predictions (please no major injuries!).

Game 1: It's Detroit. Game over. Vikes by 13.

Game 2: If there was one game on this schedule that I'm on the fence with it's this one. But screw it! It's Chicago and they only have Cutler to Marshall. We now have The Eraser and three good CB's. Vikes by three.

Game 3: Home opener against Cleveland. We own them. Vikes by 17.

Game 4: London game. Vikes don't seem to do well in 'non-standard' game day conditions. Pittsburgh has 'Big Ben'. So do the Brits. Steelers by 10.

Game 5: First game after the bye week. Vikes historically excellent in that game. Panthers just don't match up well against us. Vikes by ten.

Game 6: Let down game. Once again a 'prime time' game and we suck at those. Giants by seven but really not that close.

Game 7: If there's one thing that can get you over the 'prime time' problem it's bringing in the cheese for a home game. Bet your house on this one. Vikes by 13 and it will be all the talk for the next week. The Pack didn't do enough to protect Rodgers and the Vikes are currently built to destroy him. Look for Rodger's lazy eye to get knocked straight, then crooked again, and then straight again.

Game 8: Tee off on Romo and he makes mistakes both severely and plentifully. Vikes by seven.

Game 9: This is the second closest game I came to marking as a 'L'. 'Prime time' again - yuck! That being said I just don't see us laying the egg against them that we did last year. On top of that we are at home this time. This will be Frazier's defining moment as a coach and he will contain RGIII with a few surprises a la the Philly game when Winfield had a 'field' day against Vick. Vike's by seven but it's not really that close.

Game 10: Love you Winfield - you're my second favorite Vike of all time but you've gotten old. Percy can go pound sand. Grudge match all the way! This time Musgrave doesn't let off the ground attack. Vikes by four.

Game 11: It's so hard to win there. They get so many horseshit calls. Entitlement Town. Pack by ten.

Game 12: We will see the epic meltdown of Cutler. Their playoff dreams and really their entire franchise dream's of building around Cutler and Marshall will crash all around them. Vikes by 17. Yep - you read that correctly. Don't worry though Chicago - you'll always have 1985.

Game 13: Ravens mortgaged everything to get that Superbowl last year. I don't blame them - I'd do it too. Congrats to the 2012 squad. This year's Ravens wont even closely resemble last year's team. Vikes by seven.

Game 14: I don't know if the 15th of December is too early for Santa Claus to come out and get boo'd and pelted by snowballs but I think Philly is in tough shape this year. Vikes by three.

Game 15: This is the third-most closest pick I had to a 'L'. Either the Bengals will have disintegrated by now or will be fighting for a playoff spot. Either way - they won't have enough talent to withstand a Vikings squad that is starting to realize they have a chance - THIS YEAR. Vikes by four.

Game 16: Last game (regular season) game ever at the Dome. It's Detroit. It's a slaughter. The fact that there will be a home playoff game upcoming will be the only thing keeping us from taking our four seats with us out the door. Vikes by 17.

Time to get one correct this weekend, and then get another one wrong in Great Britain. Cheerio!

Here's to getting my fourth one wrong in a row!

Brad H -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/27/2013 1:28:49 PM)

Take Denver and give the 11.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/28/2013 12:20:20 AM)

I certainly wouldn't call it a lock Brad, it's not like they are playing Jacksonville.

Philly has a HORRIBLE defense, but they are coming off a bye. Should they get an early 14 point lead, they DO have to guys that can rush the passer, and you might see them get aggressive and get some turnovers. I would still expect Denver to win, but it might be by just 10.

It wouldn't surprise me, if everyone tells Philly it's impossible for them to win this game, just like many thought it would be impossible for Cleveland to win at Minnesota, that Philly pulls an upset. I'm NOT picking Philly, but to me it wouldn't be the biggest surprise upset of the week.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/28/2013 12:26:16 AM)

Pittsburgh 34 Minnesota 27

I think Minnesota COULD win this game if they came out aggressively passing, and tried to go deep on Pittsburghs' defense. But I don't think the Vikes will. Musgrave seemed lost in the playoff game at GB, and you might just see a similar performance from Cassel, as what you saw with Webb. I think Pittsburgh will be aggressive on defense, and will be trying to force turnovers, probably getting a couple of picks.

I think Cassel with throw for 1 TD, will throw 2 INTs, will lose one fumble, and will run one in for a TD.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/28/2013 1:07:05 AM)

I was going to be pick more home teams this week, as last week I got carried away with picking away teams. But this week I don't like many of the home teams. Here goes nothing (got one right already with SF):

Pittsburgh over MINNESOTA
DETROIT over Chicago
SD over Dallas
Baltimore over BUFFALO
Indy over JAX
Ari over TB
Was over OAKLAND
NO over Miami
Cincy over CLEVELAND
DENVER over Philly
ATLANTA over New England
HOUSTON over Seattle
KC over NY Giants
TENN over NY Jets

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/28/2013 1:38:04 AM)

A couple of superteasers:

1) Pitts +9, Buf +16, Clev +16, Indy + 2 1/2, Hou +10, Ari +13 1/2, Chi +12, NY Jets +16, Dallas +10, OAK + 13 1/2, DEN - 3, ATL + 10, Mia + 13 1/2, Pit/Min O 32

2) Indy + 2 1/2, Ari + 13 1/2, Chi +12, Pit/Min O 32, Bal/Buf U 54 1/2, Indy/Jax O 31 1/2, Sea/Hou U 55, Ari/TB U 50 1/2, Chi/Det U 58, NY G/KC U 55 1/2, NY J/TEN U 48 1/2, Dal/SD O 34 1/2, Phil/DEN U 69 1/2, Mia/NO O 37

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/29/2013 8:29:46 PM)

WOW, I nailed the actual score of the Vikings/Steelers game, 34-27 !

John Childress -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/29/2013 10:57:01 PM)

At the 1/4 pole and my predictions this year were pretty bad:

NFC North

Minnesota 10-6
Green Bay 10-6
Detroit 9-7
Chicago 7-9

NFC East

New York 9-7 - way off on this one. Had no idea their offensive line would be so bad. They will struggle to win 6 games
Washington 9-7 - finally won a game but RGIII looks hurt still and the defense is real bad. Flip that to 7-9
Dallas 7-9 - a little better than I thought but not much. They probably win the division with 8 or 9 wins
Philadelphia 5-11 - looks about right but they may end up with 4 wins as that is the worst defense I have ever seen and Chip Kelly is a real bad NFL coach

NFC South

Atlanta 10-6 - Matt Ryan got bad all of a sudden. They may only win 9
New Orleans 10-6 - better than expected thanks to an improved defense. Brees actually showing some flaws despite the good start. But they could win 11
Carolina 8-8 - far less offensive firepower than I thought, maybe 6 wins
Tampa Bay 6-10 - brutally bad team will struggle to win 4

NFC West

San Francisco 11-5 - surprised by the offensive stuggles but they should still get to 10
Seattle 10-6 - should win the division with 11 or 12 wins
Saint Louis 5-11 - on pace
Arizona 2-12- might be a little better than expected and could catch Rams

John Childress -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/29/2013 11:01:42 PM)

AFC East

New England 9-7 - better than expected, especially on defense. Should once again clear at least 11 wins
Miami 7-9 - much better than I thought and they will compete for wild card with 10 wins
Buffalo 6-10 - about where I expected
New York 5-11 - about where expected

AFC North

Pittsburgh 10-6 - obviously I had way too much in Tomlin. May win 3 games
Baltimore 9-7 - right around here, mayb one more win
Cincinnati 6-10 - might get to 7 wins but really not as good as most thought
Cleveland 4-12- starting to surprise and looking more like 6 to 8 wins lately

AFC South

Indianapolis 10-6 - Luck has stepped up his game this year and is playing the best of the young QBs right now. They could get to 11 or even 12
Houston 9-7 - I think they are getting exposed now and on pace for 9 or 10 wins
Jacksonville 7-9 - way off on this one. Look to be headed to 0-16
Tennessee 4-12 - much better than anticipated. 8 wins

AFC West

Denver 9-7 - clearly I was wrong about Manning falling off this year. They could win 13 or even 14
Kansas City 8-8 - a little faster turnaround than I expected. 9 or 10 wins possible and a playoff berth
San Diego 7-9 - right around here
Oakland 3-13 - right around here

69in09 -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/30/2013 12:25:29 AM)

Staying with my season prediction of 10-6.

We drew probably the two worst divisions in football; The NFC Least and AFC Norris.

Plus still got home games with the bears and kittens, who always choke down the stretch.

Lock it up.

Jax 3-13

AFC West
Den 13-3
KC 9-7
SD 7-9
Oak 4-12

What an ugly conference!

My AFC predictions aren't looking too bad. I underestimated the Dolphins, Chiefs, Titans and overestimated the Steelers. Still a long season and the Dolphins might be a 7-9 team, the Chiefs look like a 10 or 11 win team, Titans look like a 7 or 8 win team. Steelers look like a 4 or 5 win team though the loss of Pouncey can't be underestimated to that team and Mike Adams is a bad LT.

I also overestimated the Jags if that's possible.

No margin for error in this conference. Think several division will come down to the final day.

Way off on the Giants. Looks like i am underestimating the Lions, Seahawks and Panthers. Overestimating the Falcons, Bucs and Eagles and perhaps the 49ers.

Wish to revisit this?

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/30/2013 10:29:45 PM)

You were right on that one Brad. I sometimes get caught up in the surprise thing happening, but when teams are given no chance, they many times pull an upset or surprise close game. I was saying Philly might pull the upset, but when it came down to picking, I picked the Broncos, and even picked the Broncos in my Super Teaser, so I thought there was a high probability of Broncos mopping up, slight chance for an upset.

Actually, I think things could end up lining up pretty much as I predicted, but the one team I grossly overestimated was Washington. My surprise pick of Indy in the AFC Championship might be right on, but right now it looks like Houston was a BAD pick to win the AFC. Still too early to tell.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/30/2013 10:43:46 PM)

9-5 this week, MUCH better than the 4-12 of last week. 2 of the surprise upsets I really strongly considered were Cleveland and Buffalo, but even though they were at home, I didn't think with their history of losing the last few years, that they'd pull those upsets. Hoyer has played well, and EJ Manual has really done well, might be on his way to ROY if he keeps improving. Houston really was in a position to win their game, Schaub blew it.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I really thought Atlanta would beat NE at home. I thought NE was due to lose, they'd been just getting by, and here was a playoff team they were playing on the road. The Vikings surprised me by attacking with their passing game, and Cassel played well, and the defense sealed the deal.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/30/2013 11:36:25 PM)

A couple of superteasers:

1) Pitts +9, Buf +16, Clev +16, Indy + 2 1/2, Hou +10, Ari +13 1/2, Chi +12, NY Jets +16, Dallas +10, OAK + 13 1/2, DEN - 3, ATL + 10, Mia + 13 1/2, Pit/Min O 32

2) Indy + 2 1/2, Ari + 13 1/2, Chi +12, Pit/Min O 32, Bal/Buf U 54 1/2, Indy/Jax O 31 1/2, Sea/Hou U 55, Ari/TB U 50 1/2, Chi/Det U 58, NY G/KC U 55 1/2, NY J/TEN U 48 1/2, Dal/SD O 34 1/2, Phil/DEN U 69 1/2, Mia/NO O 37

Teasers are NOT that easy to hit, that is why a 14 teamer like I showed here, pays 20-1. But I HAVE hit one for real in Vegas, it can be done.

This past week, the one posted above, I hit 12 of 14 on the 1st one with the Jets +16 not being enough against Tennessee, and Miami + 13 1/2 not enough against NO. They are both weak teams that I shouldn't have been taking on the road. I just didn't think the Titans could dominate that much, and I overestimated the Dolphins.

I was right on all the teams with the 2nd super teaser, but missed on 3 over/unders. The one that surprised me the most was Chi/Det went well over 58 (72 points scored). I also just barely missed the other 2: NYJ/Ten went 3 over 48 with 51 points scored, Phi/Den still managed to get over 69 with 72 points.

While I didn't hit either teaser I was fairy close this week; just have to avoid bad teams on the road. I almost didn't pick Chi/Det over when I heard Bush was playing for sure, should have stayed off that one. I think this week helps give a pretty good idea where teams are at, and with that knowledge I'm hoping to post in advance a 14 team winner in the next few weeks ($100 pays $2000, plus you get the $100 back).

Marty, I feel I owe it to you to tell you. You have an addiction.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (10/1/2013 9:03:22 AM)

It takes less than 15 minutes to put together a couple of teasers like that. I'm NOT actually putting money on these, though I did some of them 15 years ago. I'm just doing it for fun.

IF somebody trusts my predictions, and they are in Vegas, they could actually put some money down, and win a considerable amount. On these I got 2 and 3 wrong out of 14, so if they can just guess which ones I'm likely to get wrong, they might without too much effort, win a considerable amount of money. $100 pays $2000, plus you get the 100 back. Just send me a gift check of 5%, thanks. [8|]

Prescott -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (10/1/2013 10:03:30 AM)

The whole point of teasers is that you can get almost all of them right, it's always one or two that kill you. That's why they do them, and make huge money on it.

You send me the money, and I'll make the bet for you. If it hits, you can give me a 10% cut.

The whole point of teasers is that you can get almost all of them right, it's always one or two that kill you. That's why they do them, and make huge money on it.

I didn't say it was easy. What I'm saying is SUPER teasers (10 points of the spread) are easier than regular teasers (5 points of the spread). If you're the kind of person that is good enough on a regular teaser to get 4 out of 5, and barely miss the 5th one, you can hit on a Super teaser. If you did 2 different regular teasers of 5 teams, and they both barely missed, you likely would have WON on a Super teaser. All 4 that hit on the regular teaser hit on a Super teaser will hit, and the 5th one will hit if the extra 5 points makes a difference for you.

Prescott, do you live in Vegas ? If so, I might be interested as I hate having to fly out to Vegas every time I want to do some Super teasers.
