If you're watching SNF, Charles Woodson just got away with obvious PI #1, in the end zone against Bennett. Yes Woodson was looking back at the ball, but he was still pushing the WR to get position. Some players will get flagged for that EVERY time. The possible future HOFer, about every 3rd time.

SoMnFan -> RE: The Packers (12/25/2011 8:04:08 PM)

Its ridiculous, marty
I think we all know certain players get advantages.
But Woodson gets away with more than anyone should. never understood it, because he really doesn't act very respectful to the game ... or anyone on the field.
Its not like he's some shining example of sportsmanship or class. But he's treated like a King by the league.

Cheesehead Craig -> RE: The Packers (12/26/2011 11:11:46 AM)

Packers 35 - Bears 18

Offense
  • Hey look!  Rodgers is back.  The play where he juked between Urlacher and Briggs was awesome.
  • The OL actually held up well enough.  Although we still really need Clifton and Bulaga back.
  • You can't stop James Jones, you can only hope to contain him.  [;)]  Great that he stepped up this week while Jennings is out.
  • Tough time running though.  The blocking for the runs was horrible.  Only the efforts of the RBs themselves enabled them to get yards.

    Defense
  • Still giving up tons of yards.
  • Still getting INTs though.  Great play by Matthews on his.
  • The run defense going to pot though is really disturbing.
  • Woodson played a solid game.  Not sure where the hate is coming from SoMnfan.  He's not jaw-jacking anyone, doesn't show up anyone on the field and simply just goes about his business and plays.

    Special Teams
  • Outstanding coverage on Hester.
  • Cobb had some good returns and was the better returner yesterday.
  • Great job punting by Masthay.

It's always great to beat one's biggest rival, but eliminating them from any playoff hopes is even sweeter.  Good to see the offense be able to adjust to the bump and run coverage.  It was effective for 6 quarters (KC game and the first half) but it appears that the Packers have figured it out, especially the WRs.  The defense is still a mess and the confusion on the field for coverages and now run gaps just perplexes me on how it could still be that way this far into the season.  The unit is what it is at this point.  Home field advantage throughout the playoffs is great.

  • Guest -> RE: The Packers (12/27/2011 9:35:30 AM)

I think Green Bay is in trouble.  Brees and Company look awfully good and the Packer defense is giving up a ton of yards.....a good QB like Brees or Brady will turn yards into scores.  New England and New Orleans are peaking at the right time.....those two teams have got to be the favorites at this point.....and I think last night Brees just took the MVP for the season.

marty -> RE: The Packers (12/27/2011 8:14:16 PM)

I think GB should still be the favorite to win the SB, remember they won it last year.

And the Packers have the Saints at home. The Saints can't carry points from this week into the playoff game. The Packers are giving up yardage, but more importantly are still pretty solid in the red zone. The Saints might get some scores, but others times will be stopped legitimately, or the Pack will get away with PI and stop those same plays that were successful against other teams.

Although I agree that Charles Woodson has NO respect for the PI rules, he has played the run VERY well the last 2 weeks. Woodson get's called for PI more than anyone, but also gets more NON calls than anyone in the league. IF Woodson played for the Vikes right now, he would set the league record for PI calls against a player in a single season. I don't know how I could just LOVE it when a player gets away with obviously breaking the rules, and does it over and over, even when just being flagged for it. Should it really come as a surprise that fans not of that team might hate this type of play ?

IF Rodgers carries his play into the post season, he is likely to make the plays he needs to for his team to win, especially in the 4th quarter. He is pretty incredible this season, is a better QB than he was last season.

The Bears did a pretty good job of looking at the film from GB/KC, but I think they should have looked more at the pump fake that Orton did, and also at what it takes to stop the GB offense in the red zone a few times. Orton's pump fake which led to a big gainer across the middle to the TE, showed how many Packers dbs cheat, hold and commit PI, and then can be caught by surprise if the QB still has time, and a WR or TE breaks free from after all that contact. Teams should try that more often on the Packers D. Brees also did it in the 1st meeting between the teams this year, and might be wise to do it a little more often should they meet in the playoffs.

Rob Viking -> RE: The Packers (12/29/2011 11:55:38 AM)

I'd have to give the advantage to the Pack in Lambeau over the Saints. Plus the Saints will have to most likely play the Falcons a 3rd time and @SF before they get to Lambeau. The Saints look great but they struggle on the road, if the game was to be in the Superdome I would take the Saints. The Falcons are decent and while I don't rate them, they do know the Saints better than anyone. Playing a 49er team in what might be a slugfest won't be easy either.

Also the Packers will most likly play one of Detroit, Dallas or NYG. Actually all 3 teams matchup well with the Pack. All 3 teams have great WRs and very good QBs, all three can get pressure on Rodgers. Though all 3 struggle against the pass despite having a good pass rush.

Would've been great to see Philly winning the NFC East on a late surge and I think they would've had the best chance to beat the Pack in Lambeau.

Guest -> RE: The Packers (1/1/2012 11:45:45 AM)

Rogers sitting today????  How does that effect his MVP status????  If Brees or Brady has a HUGE day that could swing some votes.....

    Lynn G. -> RE: The Packers (1/1/2012 6:15:23 PM)

The Lions will get the standard Wednesday call from the NFL refs apologizing for stealing a touchdown from them that may have made the difference in the game. The Lions will be upset, but the refs will shrug and then cash their check from the Packers.

The falcons better pray they don't play the Saints in the playoffs

Brees will crush them again - scoring at will.

Other than the rookie WR, ATL is a mediocre football team rooted in the 70s.

Cheesehead Craig -> RE: The Packers (1/2/2012 10:40:28 AM)

    Packers 45 - Lions 41

    Offense
  • No Rodgers?  No problem.  Matt Flynn just played himself into a very good contract.  What a phenominal day he had.
  • Ryan Grant looked like the Grant of 2009 finally.
  • It was great to see Clifton out there for the 1st Q.  Overall the protection was quite good.
  • Nelson was unstoppable and Finley had an excellent game.

    Defense
  • Same old, same old.  Gave up a ton of yards but got the turnovers when they needed to.
  • Still very concerned that this unit is going to cost the Packers a title.
  • Morgan Burnett had a very good game.

    Special Teams
  • Terrible, just terrible.  Thanks for screwing up your kickoff returns Pat Lee.  Enjoy being unemployed as your time is done with GB after this season's over.

An amazing game to finish off an amazing regular season.  The offense will do it's job, but it's the defense that's going to have to win this postseason.  They are going to have to find ways to get turnovers.  If not, then the Pack will get bounced from the playoffs.  But they get the week off and hopefully Ryan Pickett is healthy enough to help out on the DL.

Anyone who says Rodgers isn't one of the top two or three QBs in the game right now is fooling themselves.  Flynn will do well somewhere else next year.  But he wont put up Rodgers like numbers.  Rodgers has been incredibly accurate.  Sure he benefits from good receivers...but still.  What Flynn did was make the MVP race interesting for about a day.

Because he made it appear that any QB could do it in that system.  Give Flynn six to ten games and see what happens with the Packers offense.  It would begin to struggle as other teams get more and more tape on Flynn.

    Rodger rose above that.

    Flynn would struggle.

I hate the Packers...but I can easily see (and fully admit to envying this) that they have one of the NFL's best under center.

Are Green Bay Fans the N.F.L.’s Classiest?
    By TONI MONKOVIC

The phone rang well after midnight in the Sports department. It was January 2008, and the Giants had beaten the Packers in overtime in the N.F.C. championship game.

A Packers fan was on the line, calling from a bar, after having had a few.

But he wasn’t angry. He was calling to congratulate the Giants and Giants fans. He said the Giants had won fair and square, had won the line of scrimmage, and on behalf of friends at the bar and of Packers fans, he wanted to wish the team well.

(He made a joke about not being so kind if the Vikings had beaten the Packers.)

Nothing like that phone call had happened in my time in our office and hasn’t happened since.

But it was in keeping with the spirit of that week. Packers fans had been writing to The Fifth Down praising the Giants. Yes, some of that good will could have been explained by the Giants’ upset victory at top-seeded Dallas the week before. The outcome had meant a home playoff game for Green Bay and a boost for the local economy. But the outreach in hospitality continued through the week and into game day:

A Wisconsin resident wrote in to suggest some travel tips for Giants fans.

I haven’t noticed GB in any of the NY Times travel sections recently, so this seemed like a good place to make some recommendations to out-of-town Giants fans. The places on Oneida Street will just be your run-of-the-mill chain restaurants, the sports bars on Holmgren are mostly indistinguishable from any other places around the country. Brett Favre’s steakhouse is worth a peek, but try and get to downtown Green Bay to see some of the more traditional places. Al’s Hamburgers, the Stein, the South End Pub, St. Brendan’s Inn, and the Bull and Bear in the Bellin building are all worthy stops all within a block of one another. In Allouez, the Lorelei on Webster has great German food, and the Union Hotel in East DePere has a bar and restaurant that looks unchanged from 100 years ago. For those in town on Friday, there are well over 100 bars and restaurants that serve a traditional Wisconsin fish fry for around $10 or less. Cabs are cheap and parking is plentiful and free.

A Giants fan later wrote a blog post for the Fifth Down about his spontaneous decision to travel to Green Bay with his daughter:

The people of Green Bay were absolutely the finest. They were very welcoming. They spoke with us and wanted to know from where we came. There was a degree of respect for two fans who were here for the simple reason of our football team.

The day was cold. Very cold. We were prepared with our gear. Packer fans to the left and right of us offered heat packs and told us where to go to escape the cold for a break. We stood shoulder to shoulder with them and never took a break.

Extra point In 2008, the University of Cambridge released a study in which Wisconsin was determined to be one of America’s friendliest states. The study was based on data from 619,000 Americans who completed online questions over six years. Wisconsin was near the top in two of five categories: second in extroversion and fifth in agreeableness. (New Jerseyans were stressed out).

I’ve never been to Wisconsin, so help me out: Is Wisconsin as nice as it seems?

Thomas O. Eliason -> RE: The Packers (1/12/2012 2:45:54 AM)

Yes, Wisconsoners are nice. So are Minnesotans.

But packer fans are lower than pond scum. And they deserve to die a horrible death. Or at the very least, lose in the next playoff game.

I think the NYG will beat the Pack, because they have a better defense.

    But we'll see.

    Lynn G. -> RE: The Packers (1/12/2012 9:05:29 AM)

    Thanks Jon. Made me gag.

I know for sure there are kind Packer fans. I'm married to one.

But having been to a couple of games at Lambeau, and experienced hundreds of them on an internet forum - I can also attest that, just like every other fan base they have their share of dinks. When several were arrested knocking over headstones at a nearby cemetery after a game in Illinois (when the Bears were playing at the University for a couple of years) I bet no one wrote an article about how nice they were.

But I'm sure they will use that article for several decades now to show the world what they want everyone to believe.

marty -> RE: The Packers (1/14/2012 2:13:53 PM)

This game is the perfect game for Rodgers to escape the Favre shadow, and show he is BETTER than Favre. Rodgers can show he can beat the Giants in the playoffs at Lambau, something Favre couldn't do in that playoff game. Some wonder if the Pack would have beat the Giants if Rodgers had played in that game. Maybe.

    Charles Woodson

I suspect Woodson will have a HUGE day. He is talking about taking his game to another level for the playoffs, possibly cementing the HOF for him.

So I expect Woodson to have even MORE disregard for the PI rules, to hold, grab, push, make all kinds of contact before the ball gets there. He will probably be given plenty of leeway because the spread dropped from 8 1/2 to 7 1/2, more betting on the Giants (unless this changes in the last 2 days, which it COULD). But Woodson will also be heavy on anticipation and make some great INTs, he is very good at that.

Woodson deserves to be in the HOF, just like Cris Carter. Sure CC pushed off A LOT because he had no speed, but he also made some fantastic catches and scored lots of TDs despite not having Montana throwing to him. Woodson has NO regard for the PI rules, but does also make some fantastic plays at times. Woodson should have an easier time than CC making the HOF because he has a ring, and has played in 2 SB so far, maybe another one this year.

One more Just for Lynn [&:][&:][&:] This time from from the New York Daily News

Green Bay tries to be cute but the Packers and their fans are just too cheesy

    Saturday, January 14 2012, 12:58 AM

    [image]http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.1006046.1326523431!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_635/image.jpg[/image]
Big Blue rides high, but Mr. Cheesehead points out New York's plan to beat Green Bay is full of holes.

The Green Bay Packers are supposed to be all warm and cuddly, full of small-town, winter-wonderland charm. In reality, they are a dastardly, untrustworthy group of bullies.

Here are 10 good reasons you should not fall for their aw-shucks, Midwest baloney:

    1. Their fake stock.

We enthusiastically endorse public ownership of all professional teams, and love the notion of a nonprofit sports enterprise, but the Packers’ current “stock offering” to fans at $250 per share arrives with a litany of legal disclaimers taking all the cuteness out of community proprietorship.

“The Packers have no obligation to repay the amount a buyer pays to purchase Packers stock.

“The Packers believe offerrees (columnist’s note: is “offerees” even a word?) and purchasers of Packers stock will not receive the protection of securities laws with respect to any offering or sale of Packers stock.”

Plus, there is a $25 handling charge per transaction, for mailing a piece of paper to your home.

    2. Not all of their fans are as loyal as advertised. The Packers have a season-ticket waiting list of about 86,000, and a turnover of about only 90 tickets a year — meaning it might take nearly 1,000 years to get a seat. But plenty of greedy Green Bay fans this week have been reselling their playoff tickets on StubHub and similar secondary market sites.

There were still more than 1,600 tickets for sale Friday on StubHub alone, ranging anywhere from $139 to $12,936 for Suite 4000, whatever that is. In fact, that concept is so obnoxious it becomes our next reason . . .

    3. The Packers have a Suite 4000, not a suite-for-thousands.

    4. The Packers “own” the letter ‘G.’ Let’s say you want to put a slightly flattened ‘G’ on your helmet, or on any team logo. First, you have to go deal with the Packers’ legal staff. The Packers were granted the trademark on that style ‘G,’ soon after it was dreamed up by equipment manager Gerald Braisher in 1961. The University of Georgia had to go begging, helmet in hand, in order to employ something similar.

    And speaking of that G . . .

    5. Where’s the “B”?

An organization must be pretty arrogant to believe one letter is good enough to represent two proper nouns. Can you imagine the Yankees’ logo with just an “N”? The Royals’ with just a “K”? The Rays’ with just a “T”?

The Packers’ lonely “G” has created many misperceptions among chronically confused commentators such as Tiki Barber, who once decided on-air that the “G” stands for “Greatness.”That would be even more arrogant, if it were true. By the way, the inventor of the logo has the initials “‘GB.” Probably has that trademarked, too.

    6. The Packers get all the breaks, dating back to 1965.

That field goal by Don Chandler against Baltimore was no good.

Maybe this grudge is not as timely as it once was, but any Colts fan will remember that emergency quarterback Tom Matte was cheated out of a dramatic victory when Chandler’s wide kick was ruled good, sending the playoff game into overtime. The Packers “won” that game, 13-10, and the NFL soon extended the goal posts the next season to a height of 30 feet. Too late for Matte.

    7. The Packers win too often to be lovable.

They are not the Cubs or Clippers. They’re not even the Jets. Why is it that the Yankees are considered unlikable, robotic rule-stretchers, yet Green Bay has 13 NFL championships of one sort or another and is still supposed to be all pure and endearing?

    8. After getting the best from Brett Favre for 16 years, the Packers callously dumped what was left of the guy on the Jets.

Favre embarrassed most of New York with his sexting escapade — not to mention his league-leading 22 INTs hurled off his back foot. At least he helped to get Eric Mangini fired.

    9. Curly Lambeau was a decent player, but he was a much better “player” ...

He was married three times, once to a Miss California.

    10. Lombardi this, Lombardi that, Lombardi fatigue.

Books, plays . . . we’re even stuck with the Vince Lombardi Rest Stop on the New Jersey Turnpike. We know about Lombardi’s Jersey roots, but the Bill Parcells Rest Stop would be more appropriate for our fan base.

    And the food there stinks.
