He HAS to retire as well, doesn't he?
I mean, 86% of his "material" just left the game.
He'd be nuetered in the booth. He'd just sit in the corner and mumble. Nothin' to talk about. [&:]

Mr. Ed -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/4/2008 9:35:04 AM)

Nah, he'll say something like "This is what Brett Favre USED to do."

Or "That's a Brett Favre-like throw"

The references won't go away...Wait until there's a Sunday night Packers game.....[&o]

Zoilo -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/4/2008 11:25:50 AM)

What is your favorite Favre play?
Mine would have to be when he dropped back (I think it was a  playoff game), got a big rush, and threw it high and deep.  The defensive back waived for the fair catch and made the interception.     [:D]

Nice!

Toruring myself for some reason watching the Favre love fest on NFL Network but I was thinking how nice it would be someone could do a montage on those type of plays.

The dive, his INT's followed by grabbing his wrist...

I'd almost forgotten about his roll-out directly into Strahan.

Or the INT where he verbally berated the WR for running the wrong way before he threw up the duck that the DB signaled a fair catch for and made the INT.  After all...it was never Favre's fault when a pass was picked.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/4/2008 12:31:38 PM)

My all time favorite is when he totally pussed out at the goaline when he was going to take a shot.  He was about 14 yards (a little exaggeration here) past the line of scrimmage and just underhanded it towards the WR in order to avoid taking a hit.  [&:]

Zoilo -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/4/2008 1:09:33 PM)

The amazing thing is that Randy Moss got more heat for leaving the field with two seconds to go than Favre did for intentionally letting another player break the NFL single season sack record.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/4/2008 1:59:15 PM)

Ok, I have to admit, I sat thru a couple hours of the love-fest on ESPN and actually enjoyed some of it.
The on-field antics were kind of fun to listen to, he was a gunslinger, blah blah blah, all that stuff, it was ok.
I gave him his due. Then, suddenly they turned to his "incredible record in sub-freezing temperatures".
At that point, the channel was turned. Never let truth or facts cloud a good story, I guess.
When Eli Manning turned out to be the real "stud in the cold", that had to set off some alarms.
Once the Giants started dominating, Brett wanted off that field, he could have cared less how that game turned out. He was done.

I've been saying for about 5 years now that Fraud would only stay around long enough to rest atop the individual passing stats categories of note.  The guy is evidently hard-wired as a narcissist...note that the annual Favre watch had already begun before the month of January was out. He's been doing things on his own terms--damn the consequences to his team--for many years now. He's gotten "his" now and he's going to come up with a team-sounding excuse not to return in 2008. Just watch.

Then, he'll sit out a year or two and attempt a comeback. Just like so many frauds before him who have "retired". He'll miss the spotlight desperately, just like Bill Clinton has. These guys are cut from the same cloth, megalomaniacs of the highest order.

Ahem....

See you in a year, Mr. Fraud. But for now, good riddance.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/5/2008 10:12:23 AM)

Aaron Rodgers is in a terrible yet good situation.

The good - he is very likely to be the Starting QB on a storied NFL franchise.

The terrible - Like all the Denver QBs since Elway, and all the Miami QBs since Marino, he is going to have expectations that are going to be way over his head and that he will never be able to live up to.  Rodgers could play decently and he will be harshly graded and always compared as any subesquent QB for GB will be for the next 10-15 years or until another QB comes along and makes people forget about Favre (which wont happen soon).  The 49ers were the only ones that got it right by having Steve Young ready to go (for real) when Montana left.  They didn't miss a beat.  In the case of Favre, beats will be missed and even though his performance might be good anywhere else, Rodgers will be crucified.

Toby Stumbo -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/5/2008 10:28:53 AM)

Ok, now that Favre has finally retired.  Where do you rank him all-time???

Top 5?
Top 10?
Top 15?

Trekgeekscott -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/5/2008 10:36:23 AM)

Top 10 for sure,  Maybe top 5

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/5/2008 11:09:01 AM)

#1 for annoying
#1 in int's
#1 for faking injuries
top 10 for QB play.

Toby Stumbo -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/5/2008 11:12:03 AM)

I'd be interested in your list... I say Favre is maybe top 10.

First thing you have to do is decide about rings. My personal opinion is that rings get overrated, but they have to factor in. I think when talking about players of similar talent, people tend to put WAYYY too much emphasis on the rings. It's like one ring can make up for 100TDs, or clearly inferior ability. Rings in the NFL are earned by at least 50 people, not just a QB. Throw in the one and done playoffs, and the extremely short season, and just plain luck, and rings get overrated.

That said, it's what everyone plays for, so they do count. They aren't enough to vault someone way up by themselves, but with similar talent, they are a deciding factor. IMO the greatest QB of all time "could" never win a ring and still be the best. It's possible, to me.

My list, which is only "firm" for the first 3.. the rest are moveable depending on what you emphasize.

1. Johnny Unitas - yeah, he played a long time ago, but he's the best
2. Joe Montana - Earned his nickname, and wonall the time. Did you ever see Joe Cool choke?
3. Otto Graham - Check this guy out if you don't know about him
4. Dan Marino - Best pure passer ever, never had talent around him
5. Terry Bradshaw - Biggest wildcard to me, could be anywhere from 4th to 15th
6. Fran Tarkenton - Changed the position
7. John Elway - Took untalented teams to the Super Bowls early, won Super Bowls with talent late.
8. Sid Luckman - You don't leave Babe Ruth off a list of greatest hitters, do you?
9. Roger Staubach - I hate this guy. Won and put up numbers for a dynasty
10. Tom Brady - Recent record setting season moves him up
11. Peyton Manning - Brady's counterpart
12. Bret Favre - Peaked in 97 - greatest attribute is his longevity.
13. Warren Moon - Amazing passer, would own every NFL record if not for rampant racism
14. Dan Fouts - The white Warren Moon
15. Jim Kelly - great NFL player, even better in CFL

I do not see how Bret Favre is even better than Brady or Manning, at this point, even with their careers only half over. He doesn't have rings over them, and both have proven they can have vastly better single seasons. They don't make half as many stupid throws, and while Brady may have a hard time hitting all of Favre's numbers/records, Manning is on pace to smash them into oblivion.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/5/2008 4:17:46 PM)

Dr. Z hits the Nail on the head about Favre.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/dr_z/03/04/favre/1.html

The surprising thing was that Favre's ratings stayed high, despite his occasional looseness with the ball. That was how hot he could get. Remember the night in Oakland, when it was iffy whether he'd play, following his father's death? Four TD passes and 399 yards in the air was the legacy he left out there. But there were downers, too, and it only hurt Favre that the knights of the TV screen always were ready to make excuses for him.
His fourth quarter and overtime meltdown against the Giants last season, which put a sad end to a remarkably classy season? Never mind ... the redemption of the Giants' field-goal kicker was the angle. The goofy, looping interception that cost the Pack the Eagles' game in OT in the divisionals in 2004? Oh, let's put it on the defense for allowing McNabb his fourth-and-26 completion in regulation.
Always ready to make excuses, always braying about "what a good time he's having," that was the continual barrage from TV. Maybe a few frowns, a stern reprimand or two, might have toned down the wild maverick a little, but gosh, he sure is having fun out there. And that's what the game is all about, isn't it? Fun, boys acting like men and so forth.

djskillz -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/5/2008 8:45:41 PM)

E, while I have Montana/Brady/Peyton higher, and I would also have Steve Young high on that list, I basically agree on Favre's placing.

Top 15?  ya, probably.  Top 10 or top 5?  No way in my mind.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:The Packers (3/5/2008 9:56:42 PM)

Great.
"Official" retirement announcement comes on Thursday.
Make sure you have something planned that day.
Cheese production will grind to a halt for that dark hour.
