Here is an interesting nugget from Souhan's column about McBride today.

Reeve and her staff coach minute details. McBride always was valued for her quick-release shooting and three-point range. She also favored a one-footed, one-handed bank-shot floater that she would release from as far as 15 feet from the basket.

Here's an example of Reeve and her staff — in this case, lead assistant coach Katie Smith — demanding efficiency:

"It's been a point of education with Kayla,'' Reeve said. "We wanted her to use it where it would be more efficient. She likes to use that thing from 15 feet, and we don't like that. So, if you notice, Katie has worked really hard on this with Kayla. When you come off a screen and you're 15 feet away, that's a two-foot stop. Two-foot stop and shoot it. You feel the defender behind you, but you don't fear the contact. You want the contact. You have to go over the screen with KMac, so you have them right where you want them.

"The tendency is to abandon the ball quickly. I want them to ram into you, so you go to the foul line. KMac shoots 98%, so we want the contact.

"That's a part of the game that we targeted, and here she's midway through her first season with us, and she's getting better at that.''

This the level of comprehension of the players skills and teaching them how to maximize it that Reeve possesses that was beyond Ryan Sanders comprehension. Reeve brought Katie Smith in with the idea that she would be a head coach again in the not too distant future. The upside is that Reeve got a hell of an assistant. The downside is that Smith will probably be gone within a year or two and even take someone else from Reeve's staff with her.

About a week before that game, Reeve was talking about the Lynx not getting calls and getting screwed on FT attempts. A week later the Lynx become only the second team in the history of the league to not get to the FT line in a game.

Minnesota Lynx (12-7) over Los Angeles Sparks (6-13), 86-61

Napheesa Collier led the Lynx to their seventh-straight win and a firm hold on fourth place with a career-high-tying 27 points to go along with seven rebounds. Meanwhile, Layshia Clarendon (14 points, eight assists) scored in double figures for the sixth time in a row and notched eight-plus assists for the third time in a row.

Sylvia Fowles contributed 10 points and seven rebounds to the winning cause and Damiris Dantas (eight points, eight rebounds, five assists) and Jessica Shepard (five points, seven rebounds, five assists) were also key contributors.

Minnesota led by 16 after one and by 15 entering the fourth before winning the final frame by 10. It was dominant in the field goal percentage battle (55.9 to 36.7) and went 9-of-19 from deep compared to LA’s 4-of-15 effort. The Lynx also outrebounded the Sparks 37-24 and won the points in the paint battle 44-30.

Erica Wheeler had 14 points and six helpers in defeat.

This was Minnesota’s largest-ever margin of victory in Los Angeles and first win in the City of Angels since Sept. 6, 2016.

The Lynx picking up Layshia Clarendon when it looked like she might be out of the league has to be one of the biggest stories of the first half.

She's been exactly the stabilizing force the team has needed on both ends and has made so many small plays that have likely swung games.

Also of note, Phoenix keeps sliding. They're down to 7th place - and closer to 12th than 1st. The Lynx own their draft pick this year.

Now consider Ariel Powers is due back in early to mid August along with Ochanwa and the Lynx could climb to Seattle's stratosphere by the playoffs.

Game Notes, courtesy of Lynx Public Relations:

• Napheesa Collier registered her 15th double-double, producing 18 points, 10 rebounds, four dimes, and a career-high five blocks. Coller is the eighth player in WNBA history to record that kind of line.

• Minnesota won its first game of the season when being out-shot. The Lynx are 12-0 when taking more shots than their opponent and now 1-7 when failing to do so.

• Last night was Layshia Clarendon’s fourth straight game with at least eight assists.

• Minnesota is the second-best team in the W by fourth quarter net rating. They outscored New York 24-13 in the fourth after trailing following the third quarter. The Lynx are now 6-6 when tied or trailing entering the fourth.

I think Collier may have a little chip on her shoulder after being stuck at the end of the bench for team USA. Phee is so much better than so many players that were on that team. The way that program continues to bend over backward to kiss Taurasi's ass is unbelievable.

It seems to be a seniority based system. Syl got stuck behind Griner a lot, but she at least got a decent amount of clock.

Crazy that the team with the 3rd best record can be ousted in a one game playoff.

PG play just killed us. Clarendon was nowhere near healthy and Dangerfield looked totally overmatched.

Napheesa Collier Announces Pregnancy

With Phee expecting the arrival of their child in May 2022, it seems all but guaranteed that the Lynx will be without their two-time all-star to start the season yet again. How long she will be out is the real question. Minnesota limped out of the gates last season, going 0-3 before Phee (and eventually Layshia Clarendon), who returned to the team after completing her season abroad, helped the Lynx finish the season winning 22 of their last 29 games. One lone person cannot simply fill the void of what Collier does on the court, so Coach Reeve will have her hands full in order to avoid the same disastrous start of last season.

If you take a look at a few players who returned from child birth, we have longtime Lynx rival Candace Parker, former Lynx guard Odyssey Sims, and gold medalist Skylar Diggins-Smith. In 2009, CP3 returned after 1.5 months to practice with the team. During the 2020 Wubble season, Sims returned to the team just 4 months later. Diggins-Smith miraculously played the majority of the 2018 season pregnant before opting out the entire 2019 season. All that to say: It can vary. It will be really interesting to see what her timeline will be like, but hopefully she takes the time to make sure her (and her family’s) health is 100% before she comes back to the game.
