They will have really difficult cuts to make. Trading Rudolph enables them to keep one other player.

If Rudolph were smart he'd take the Vikings deal, assuming it isn't completely insulting. If he gets traded then he's on a one year deal and will be looking for work the following year. He can bet on himself, but a 30 year old TE, who's already slow and a marginal blocker is not going to be in demand. And his real risk is if the Vikings can't find a trade partner and they cut him. Then he's really going to take a hit to the wallet.

He wants to make the same but after this year he won't make anywhere near 7.5 million a year. I am not sure someone will pay him 6 million a year....he can take a small pay cut this year at a marginal rate or get 3-4 million on the open market next year.

I'm pretty sure you guys are wrong about what Rudolph can make as a FA. TEs that are not on his level are getting 7 Million or more. He should be able to get about the same as he is getting now as an FA.

I would not give a high draft pick for him. Maybe a fifth.

If he wanted to add another year to his contract, then I'd say better to lose him a year early than a year late. As Bruce mentioned, there is opportunity cost with his spot on the roster.

My favorite Kyle Rudolph moment was in the Seattle playoff game, running down the sideline. All for naught, unfortunately.

The only TE making more than Rudolph, who's actually giving his team their money's worth is Travis Kelce. Guys on his level, like Greg Olson, Eric Ebron, Zach Ertz, Jared Cook and Jack Doyle are all paid in the 6mm area or less. Personally, I'd take any of those TE (except Olson because of injury) over Rudolph.

He'd be a fool to help us when it comes to his own finances. He will make his 7 million or more this year with us or somebody else. Than he can sign a two or three year contract next year worth $20 million with $10 million guaranteed. That is based on this years FA contract.

If we cut him He will not make 7 million. We can get more compensation by cutting him. Or am I wrong because it's past a certain date.

We get zero compensation if we cut him. We get the cap savings, but not compensatory pick. Also I guarantee you there are teams that would be happy to pay him $7 million to play for them. If I understand correctly we have already had offers of draft pick/picks for him from teams that would then also have to pay his $7 million. The team that trades for him or signs him FA will only have him locked up for a year, but if he leaves they will get the compensatory pick based on how much he signs his next contract for.

I'm betting the Vikings are getting lowball offers. It may be better to pay the man and let him go next year.

Then we need to cut both Anthony Harris and Rashod 'The Bod' Hill or cut/trade Waynes.

If you're high on Smith, and I understand why people are, then let Rudolph go.
With Rudolph on the team, Smith will be used sparingly, nursed, eased into action with all the requisite excuses for a rookie.

Rudolph is part of the problem of our offense. Forget the lack of YAC, he's the opposite of a match-up problem. He's not a downfield threat at all. His physical limitations prevent him from stretching a defense, which negatively impacts our RB pass catching game.

Contrary to him, he's an average blocker at best. Hasn't he been a constant part of our poor pass protection in what seems like forever? Has he had a positive impact on our running game?

If you believe in Smith, throw him into the fire. Find out what you have. That will not happen if Rudolph is on the roster.

Unfortunately, I don't like our TE situation either way. Not impressed with Smith's hands, and ability to run downfield routes, and track a ball and catch it with arms extended. Also, don't like the size if we go Smith/Conklin.

In summary, Smith would probably be an upgrade in replace of Rudolph, primarily because of athleticism. Rudolph is the least athletic #1 TE in the league. He harms more than helps, in all aspects of today's game, and contractually.

I've been thinking about the difficult cuts that will have to be made. Of course injuries often dictate choices and of course this is way too early because players may regress or take steps forward in their development. Still, I have to say this writer's predictions may very well be pretty accurate.

I don't see anything there I would disagree with either.

Perhaps the Vikings could trade Rudolph for another player instead of a draft pick. For example it could be a 3rd receiver or an OG.

Is there a deadline as to when we have to sign Bradbury and get under the cap?

Can Bradbury participate in OTA's and TC unsigned?

One thing I wouldn't be surprised regarding the starting 5 oline would be:

Reiff
Kline
Bradbury
Samia
O'Neal

Elf was bad last year and by no means should be penciled in as a starter unless he proves worthy.

Samia seems like the type of guy that you can't keep out of the line up. The "nasty" he and Bradbury can bring is something this unit desperately needs.

I completely agree. I hope Kline is at least better than Elflein was last year. One not so great possibility is that both Elflein and Kline are no better than they were last year.

One problem for Elflein is that he is rather undersized for a guard. He would have to go against one of those Bear DT's. I know we will scheme for that, but will he hold up to a nose tackle on running plays or an athletic 3 tech on passing downs?

I feel confident that Kubiak will ensure that the best group is out there. Last year, that didn't always seem to be the case, though maybe none of the second unit was any better than the starters. Given that they realize how awful the G-C-G combo of Compton-Elflein-Remmers was (they've replaced them all), it would have been useful to see one of the backups in there last year. They did re-sign Brett Jones, after all, so he must have some ability.

Besides New England, Dallas and Seattle are deficient at the tight end position.
