I strongly doubt that Zimmer is making the call as to who our #2 QB is.

Not even close, they brought in garbage as backups to Ponder. The point is who cares who is #2 and who is #3 if they both make the team. Sloter needs to accept some of the blame, there have been 3 different coordinators (Norv, Flip, and now Stepanski) who think he should be #3 and they have been given free reign on the choices.

How do you know that? Flip wasn't even allowed to call games the way he wanted to. I doubt he had much say over the depth chart.

(And Mannion is garbage. He's had one good season in his career - his JR year of college, and that was all Brandin Cooks).

And Norv was pre-Sloter

I don't. Zim is the final say and he has his guys that he likes for whatever reason. I don't think it matters one bit what side of the ball they are on. I think something about Sloter rubbed him the wrong way from the beginning and he never changed his mind.

I think it does matter what side of the ball they are on, ESPECIALLY with Kubiak in town.

Nah. Zim is the final word. When he makes up his mind he doesn't defer to anybody. That's why we saw guys like Norv and Flip gone in the middle of seasons.

The #Vikings announced CB Mike Hughes has been removed from the physically unable to perform list. He spent time rehabbing his knee during training camp.

Chris Tomasson@christomasson
Mike Hughes cleared to practice and might have chance to play in Sept 8 opener vs Atlanta We will have to see how that goes.

Nice to hear that Hughes will be ready for game one or soon afterwards. People have been treating him missing time as if it were fact.

Also, as a career Backup QB,
Kubiak’s perecption of what a Backup QB is, is likely old school out of date philosophy.

He see’s an extra Coach who never challenges to start, just holds a clipboard and fills in for about 3 quarters every year.
He sees himself while others see a future.

It’s why Gardenhire loved him some overmatched, skinny, slappy Nick Punto so much,

Ben Goessling@GoesslingStrib
The fact the Vikings took Hughes off the PUP list before the season, though, obviously means they expect he'll be able to play before Week 6. Hughes did say he'd likely start the season with a brace on his knee, until he's comfortable shedding it, and wants to return kicks again.

Sam Ekstrom@SamEkstrom
Mike Hughes bullet points:

-Not ready to totally ditch the knee brace. He's been rehabbing on and off with it.
-Confirmed he suffered more damage than just an ACL tear but didn't elaborate.
-Unclear on timeline to fully practice.
-Upon return, hopes to contribute in return game.

Ben Goessling@GoesslingStrib
Mike Hughes said the Vikings are continuing to "take it slow" with his rehab, offered no timetable of when he could play or practice with the team and declined to provide specifics about further damage to his knee, following Mike Zimmer admitting it was a multi-ligament tear.

I was going to say that I do believe Zimmer is going to give a lot of latitude to Kubiak in personnel decisions. All of us would like to be a fly in the room where the roster decisions are hammered out. Stefanski probably will have his say too along with Spielmann. My guess is there will be some push and pull as they collaborate on the offensive players, but not so much on the defensive players.

He may be needed to take Rhodes spot.

Is it time to worry already I didn't think they looked good on either side of the ball. The only time they seem to get life in them is when sloter came in. The first just seemed like they were bored or did I read all this wrong

Its harsh, but totally fair.

I'm all over this one.

One note from Vikings walk-throughs today: It was just the team's projected starters and players unlikely to play in the fourth preseason game. Bisi Johnson was in that group. So if it wasn't clear before, expect Johnson to make the team's 53-man roster.

While slowly working my way through Saturday's #Vikings game, my big takeaway has been the run blocking of the second-team offensive line. Several successful rushes were fueled by positive interior reps. The OL roster cuts will be interesting within this group.

I think he liked Dakota Dozier.

Re-watching Elflein's game and there's not much at all to be upset about so far (I'm halfway through the 3rd drive). Couple of sketchy engagements at the second level but that's it

Dalvin Cook topped out at 19.74 MPH during his 85-yard touchdown run on Saturday.

(Minnesota Vikings on Twitter)

If my math is correct that means if he had a running start before the 40 yard dash he would complete it in just over 3 seconds.(In full uniform carrying a football!) Maybe somebody smarter than me can confirm that.

I think right now his best attributes are his quickness to wall off a guy one way or the other.

If he has to stop an Akiem Hicks bull rush, we are in trouble.

I think Dennison and the strength coach can make him a starter by next year but he would probably struggle this year.

There are a couple positives going into the season for me is that they shored up the oline with Kline and Bradbury, added a big threat at TE, Cook looks healthy, and the LBs (mostly Kendricks and Barr) look healthy going into the season. This is one of the deepest Vikings teams we have had in years as they added some offense this year.

I would rather have a wake up call in the 3rd preseason game then during the season.

Agreed. Definitely areas to be excited about, IMO. Hope it all comes together.

I was a huge proponent of signing Cousins. I mostly have been on the Zim train (I recognize many of the flaws discussed). So if things derail this year, I'm ok with all the scrutiny that will be on Cousins, Zim, and Rick.
