I think right now his best attributes are his quickness to wall off a guy one way or the other.

If he has to stop an Akiem Hicks bull rush, we are in trouble.

I think Dennison and the strength coach can make him a starter by next year but he would probably struggle this year.

Yep.

I know this link has been posted. But G**D*** I love Bud Grant. And this quote:

“I’ll decide who makes the team, who starts, who plays. I could look at film and get as much out of it as a guy who sits down for four hours and documents everything, puts it in a computer and spits out tendencies. I relied more on what I saw and what I felt. It was not 100 percent accurate, but it was in my gut. I knew who the best players were, and I didn’t need three weeks of training camp with a bunch of rookies to tell who the players were. That’s what I was getting paid for.” - Bud Grant

Sloter is just a cocky, undisciplined gunslinger who is not a student of the game or able to communicate what he sees on the field in the film room and therefore undeserving of a chance to gain #2 status and assist the starter...is that so?:

quote:

"This is probably what you were referring to when the safety is lined up over the slot. The backer came but so did the safety, did you know that your slot was going to be open that like that?

Kyle: Yes so this is what we call a BOSS pressure. Every game I would look at a teams top blitzes on film and for the most part you get the same 8 to 10 different pressures by a team. I knew by the stand up end that he was going to drop because in that pressure his responsibility is the flat. Most of the game he was in a three point stance. I also noticed the safety low and his eyes inside on me. And the backside safety starting to cheat to the middle of the field. It's then the Mike linebackers responsibility to cover our fastest guy in the slot with no help vertically. All I had to do for the protection on this call was call a "red dog" check. This means that our offensive line had the four down defensive linemen and the blitzing backer. But that means that the safety coming would be free. The RB’s responsibility is to pick up either the Mike backer or the will if he blitzed. I knew the Mike had the man in the slot and the will was not coming because that would not be sound defense if he did. So I called "red dog" which mean the RB abandons his responsibility with the backside linebackers and goes to the opposite side to pick up safety pressure. All I had to do was let the slot win and I knew it was a TD before I snapped the ball.

That is a fair assessment. I like his attitude, quickness, uses his hands pretty well, but he is going to need to get stronger both up top and in the trunk before he can be an effective starter in the NFL. But I do think he will be a very good one in a couple of years.

Elf is doing OK, but I was hoping for more from him as a guard. He has had a full year for conditioning and has come in much stronger than the previous two years, but I am not sure it is translating well on his interior play. By that I mean, how effective is he against guys his size. He does fine in space, in fact, very well in space, but in those cases he's matched against much smaller guys, and he flourishes in these scenarios. I want to see him be a tough guy against the big boys up front, right now, I'm not seeing that. If he can get to that point, I think he will be fine, but right now, he's had some pretty weak moments against the big boys.

He was one of the select offensive linemen in the draft who were supposed to be a good fit for our blocking scheme. He strikes me as having the personality where he won't back down to anyone. I do remember his offensive line coach at Oklahoma saying he did need to get stronger. I bet he's making progress along those lines and it looks like he's getting more and more comfortable out there as the preseason progresses. He would be one player who should absolutely be playing Thursday night whether he has has made the roster or not.

I was just reviewing the roster and I was asking myself my question about which players who are not starters that I would not want to play because they have made the team and I do not want to see them hurt. The only other player that I want to add to the list is Jones who is like the first offensive lineman off the bench. I don't know what will actually happen, but I was just thinking if I was the coach. That's what we do here, right?

Every rookie outside of Bradbury should play. That includes Irv Smith Jr, who I'm not even sure will be game activated vs the Falcons. I wavered a bit on Alexander Mattison, but I think that even though he has made the team he could benefit from playing at least some, but so could Bisi Johnson, so perhaps he sits. Does he play special teams? I woud think that Bisi Johnson could benefit from playing too, but there are so many receivers who are trying to make the last roster spot.

I would play all of the linebackers outside of Kendricks and Barr because my thinking would be that they make the team based at least partially, on their contributing to special teams. There are going to be players flying around out there on special teams plays.

Traditionally I fall asleep during that last preseason game, but I record every game just in case. It would be interesting to review it after the cuts are made and there are some surprises.

Mike Hughes. We forget about him, but he was a first rounder and it would be nice to have him contributing big time this season. He should be kickoff return guy, for sure. Anyway, check out the video.

I would go with Zylstra on the team rather than claim a cut player and Udoh rather than Collins.

Frustrating!

Its harsh, but totally fair.

Even the comments are surprisingly reasonable for DN.

Author makes a compelling argument that's hard to disagree with regarding Mannion and Elf being gifted the starting jobs despite looking rather pedestrian.

Agree with Udoh over Collins.

Usually an accomplished Vet WR gets cut so I would wait and see who becomes available.

Beebe Zylstra Johnson???

1-2 projects behind Diggs / Thielen but not all projects.

Yes.

IMO DN could have gone further with the Adam Zimmer/Gedeon over Wilson issue as well.

May as well trade Sloter if you are not going to give him a chance.

This is really souring me on Zimmer.

I really liked Zimmer before this idiocy.
I mean if Cousins doesn't get hurt, no big deal cause neither Sloter nor Manion will get in a game....but if Cousins goes down at all you are hitching your wagon to Manion who is pedestrian at best and Sloter, who when he plays brings a leadership and energy to the offense that you will not get with Manion, Sits.

Not only does he adapt and innovate, he specifically exploits opposing coaches' tendencies to stick to the old adages.

Nice to see Taylor gone. Does Benwikere's release bode well for Boyd making the team. I think he could be a gem just waiting for some polish.

Not that there's been much doubt but practicing w/starters & not playing Thursday likely means #Vikings FB CJ Ham again makes 53-man “Just from looking at it that’s what it looks like but I know in this business you can never get too comfortable You never know until the deadline"

So I thought Taylor would be on the team until the 1st preseason game when he got like no reps and that was a bad sign.

I had Benwikere on the 53 I just did though. So I’m surprised. I don’t think there’s 6 rosterable corners here so 5 safeties and 5 corners may be the way

Looking at the 1st team offense in the last game, and Kirk's typical performance against the better teams, you might want to add Cousins to that list.
