David, there is a difference between John Harbaugh and Mike Zimmer:

Harbaugh has won a Super Bowl.

Zimmer hasn't won a SB, and his defenses in Cincinnati and Minnesota usually show up flat for playoff games, or games required to make the playoffs.

He followed up that SB with missing the playoffs 4 of the next 5 years.

It’s a different game than when he won.

No more old guys. I want an innovative young guy for my next coach.

The first round pick for the Vikings could very well be Oklahoma lineman Cody Ford. Ford said he will not go back to Oklahoma to play his senior season and will enter the draft. That’s good news for Minnesota considering that’s one more player that can help on the line.

The reason I said ‘lineman’ is because Ford has the ability to play both guard and tackle. He played left guard during his 2016 and 2017 season. He then moved over and played right tackle in 2018. Ford did break his leg early in his 2016 season, and had a banged up year in 2017.

Just based on his ability to play multiple positions on the line is beneficial for the Vikings, simply on how the line has the reputation to be banged up at times.

The only downside to him declaring for the draft during his junior year is scouts, teams and fans only have seen Ford play one whole healthy season. But, if you were to ask someone like Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari if that was the right move, he’d probably say yeah, just because of the stellar year and attention Ford received during his junior year at OU.

The six-foot-four-inch, 338 pound Pineville, Louisiana native earned himself a spot on the All-Big 12 team this past season. He was also apart of the offensive line at Oklahoma that won the Joe Moore Award for having the best O-line in college football.

Charlie Campbell, senior draft analyst with WalterFootball.com has Ford as the number one ranked guard in the upcoming draft class. That’s pretty interesting considering his one healthy year he’s played at right tackle, not guard. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has him ranked third.

Again, just to wrap things up, I think he would be a good fit considering he can play both the guard and the tackle position. I’d rather take someone who can be versatile, as opposed to someone who will be stationary at one position.

Oh, and based off this lil’ clip, he’s not afraid to be physical by any means. If you’re a big follower of college or Sooner football, let me know you’re thoughts of him down in the comments...daily norseman

I don't know about Ford. He looks a little too heavy and slow for a cornerback. But, Zim likes tall corners, so it's a possibility...

'different vibe'...'rediscover nasty'....

zimmer asked his defense to play his brand of 'prevent' one too many times - and finally, against new orleans last postseason, he lost them...nasty is psychologic - you can't just turn it on and off like flicking a switch....

you can't take the best defense in the league and ask them to go soft the final quarter of almost every game...when the game became close and they had to reach back to find their nasty - there was nothing there...they had lost their nasty momentum - and have only been able to gather it up sporadically over the last year....

the first thing that zimmer has to do is to stand in front of his team and announce that he will never ask them to stand down again...never ask them to lie back and give an offense the underneath stuff...never rush the quarterback with only three defenders...they will hit their opponents hard - including the quarterbacks....

Thanks Dan, fun to watch.

So many of those highlights were Cunningham hitting him deep, and Brady.

I think few QBs would have gotten more out of him, maybe Peyton Manning in his prime. Aikmann or Moon in their prime, Favre or Rodgers, Elway or Marino, Ruthlessburger, ???

I agree with you Dave, that that would be the BEST option. I just don't know of any. Any you have in mind ?

I see it as:
A) Young, innovative coach
B) A head coach who has won a SB
C) Zimmer
D) A head coach that likely sucks.

I would like to be done with C, attempting either B or A.

And just like that, on cue, the Texans are melting down. Another team that hasn't figured out that high-priced defensive ends are a waste of money.

Eric Ebron is exactly what we needed as a key piece this season should have looked there rather than the wasted space on George Iloka who was for some reason never used...

Are the Vikings playing in Texans jerseys? I swear I've seen this same gameplan from our guys. They look very ill prepared and uninspired.

High-priced defensive ends mean nothing if your guys on the back end can't cover.

Luck was sometimes clutch and beat bad teams in the past, now that he has a good head coach, the sky is the limit for this team.

The Texans look like the Vikings in the playoffs, ill prepared and outcoached

Yes, was looking at roster spot (space) more than cap cost issue...

Ebron hadnt shown much of anything in our division for Kitties but I really thought he would be a nice piece to take a flier on for the Vikes, is a real point of need...

We must find that athletic pass catching, field stretching TE that opposing Ds have to scheme for and respect...

Slow dumbo package TEs are only like adding another shitty lineman to our OL which is putrid, leaving our WRs without help keeping the double teamed...

Our high priced TE doesnt scare anyone and has no YAC in him, not an offensive weapon so why bother to pay him as a top TE?

Ebron really would have been a nice find for the O

Luck has a very clean pocket.

It's because he gets rid of the ball quickly. Against an offense that is clicking, high-priced defensive linemen are irrelevant. My case:

"The NFL is a passing league. In particular, a short-passing league. It doesn't matter who the defensive end is. If a good quarterback is running a crisp offense, it's a two-step drop and it's gone. No defensive end on the planet has time to get to the quarterback when an offense is clicking.

Since the turn of the century, Michael Strahan was arguably the best sack man in the game. He led the league with 22.5 in 2003. It's still the NFL record despite the fact that teams are now throwing the ball way more than ever before. If you look at most pass attempts for a season in NFL history, 12 of the top 13 have happened since 2010. Only Drew Bledsoe in 1994 is not.

Aaron Donald led the league this year with 20.5 sacks. Opponents threw the ball 533 times against the Rams. What was he doing the other 512.5 pass plays?

The Patriots have arguably been the most dominant franchise in the league for quite some time. They are the model of how to build a team. Have they ever spent big money on a pass-rushing defensive end? Can you name their defensive ends over the past 8-10 years? Last year their sack leader was Trey Flowers (6.5). 2016 it was Trey Flowers (7.0). Chandler Jones led them in 2015 (12.5). Rob Ninkovich in 2014 (8.0). Chandler Jones again in 2013 (11.5). Ninkovich again in 2012 (8.0). Andre Carter and Mark Anderson in 2011 had 10 each (who?). Mike Wright in 2010 with 5.5 (seriously, never heard of him). In 2009 it was Tully Banta-Cain (10.0). All good football players I'm sure, but not exactly household names.

Trey Flowers has led the Patriots for the last three seasons in sacks. He has a base salary of $1.9-million. Conversely, next season, Everson Griffin will have a base salary of $10.9-million. Linval Joseph will have a base salary of $8.9-million next season. Sheldon Richardson earned $5.8-million this season. In other words, the Vikings are hemorrhaging money on the defensive front. The Texans are even more ridiculous. Clowney made a base salary of $12.3-million this season. Watt made $11-million. Is it any wonder why the Vikings and Texans both have bad offensive lines?"

I noticed the Colts used 6 olineman on many plays.

I seen we may have done this a few times this season on short yardage plays. But the Colts come out on 1st down with it and are just gashing Hou running the ball. Seems to me with our bad oline we should have done this more often in an effort to get the run game on track.

Dline 2019

Hunter 13.5ml
Griffin 11.0ml 1.2 dead cap
Joseph 10.7ml 3.6 dead cap

I can't see bringing Richardson back on a big long term contract. We're already paying big money to Smith, Rhode,s Kendricks, and Waynes 5th year option.

I would cut Griffin and roll with the young guys. I'd consider cutting joseph as well.

Need to redirect some money to the oline and modern day TE

Their 6th lineman may be pretty good. We know our 6th lineman is not.
