Vikes released Marcus sherels

Not a surprise. When Hughes was returning punts, the writing was pretty well on the wall.

Seems like it is a week early though.

They will need the roster spot for Hill when he's back....but not until after the Redskins game.

So is there some other reason for freeing up a roster spot?

Thielan is not likely to play. They'll probably activate Davis or Dillon.

And another trade:

Denver is dealing WR Emmanuel Sanders and a 2020 5th-round pick to San Francisco in exchange for 2020 3rd- and 4th-round picks, per league sources.

First Mohamed Sanu, now Sanders....

That's probably a pretty good pickup for the niners!

don't they already have a speed guy? I forget his name.

Sanders is expensive and old. He's been very good though and isn't afraid to go over the middle.

When your 6-0 and have the cap space, probably a good move.

I was thinking that too. Probably gives them a guy to go over the middle. I'm pretty stoked that we got Bisi in the fold now. Our offense is coming together.

PFF rookie TE player grades:

Irv Smith Jr., MN, round 2, selection 50, 73.8
TJ Hockenson, Det, round 1, selection 8, 61.3
Noah Fant, Denver, round 1, selection 20, 42.7

The eyeball test tells me Irv is playing really well. Seems like he adds a nice dimension to the passing game and from what I can tell blocks pretty well.

I know we've all mentioned how much he looks like a WR … but the more you watch him, we might just have a real hybrid here.
Can handle the demands of both positions the way it seems.
Has to be a bitch to try to cover. It has to be your best athlete, really. Too fast for big guys, too strong for a smurf.

There was a play against Det where he blocked 2 different defenders that sprung Cook for a nice gain.

Mike Zimmer on the challenges of players preparing for a Thursday game: "I've asked a couple of them if they're tired or they're sore. They said, 'Maybe a little,' and I said, 'No one cares.' That's basically the extent of that conversation."

#Vikings have pretty good balance all around:

Offense: 6th in points, 6th in yards.
Defense: 6th in points allowed, 6th in yards allowed.

#Skol

(Warren Ludford on Twitter)

Eh, I've seen better balance.

I liked that pick when they made it. I also hated the Mattison pick and I am so happy to be dead wrong about that one.

Same on both. I was like "Mattison what?".

For a HC that wants to emulate guys like Billy B our guy should watch how Bill plays a good lead into the 2nd half of a game...

The Patriots dont let up, they dont go into a shell, playing soft zone prevent trying to get cute thinking that they will let the other team chew up clock plodding down the field... In todays game just giving the other team momentum is a huge mistake... Keep going after them instead of letting up and a couple crazy plays and all of a sudden youve let a team have hope and things snowball...

Was beyond agrivating watching us play that damn prevent D yesterday and seeing Stafford burn us for 10 and 11 right down the field and a couple desperation plays and they score... Keep going after them, demoralize the team and make it clear there is no hope in getting back into the game. Coaching and playing Prevent makes our guys complacent and let up, it showed...

Yeah that's what burned me up. The Lions offense played awesome yesterday and I have to give them credit. Our players weren't on our A game on the defense. It happens. But to just let them score like that was ridiculous! 2 minutes for 10 plays leaving 4 minutes left. Awful strategy that hopefully Zimmer learns from.

Just for a second I thought we could score too fast then the Lions would score and try an onside kickoff.

And what's with the term 'onside kickoff' anyway?

When it was pretty clear Diggs was not going to score, I was yelling "wrap it up" and "just lay down" at the TV, too!

The TD right before half pissed me off, too. Bad technique on our part.

Other NFL news:

Wow. CHI got spanked. At home. The Bears are who we though they were.

Don't enjoy seeing Cowpuke win, but enjoy seeing PHI lose. Badly. And I still don't think DAL is that great. Game was out of control for PHI right out of the gate.

SEA trucked at home. Good!

GB is not as good and balanced as some think. Collin Cowherd giving them a hand job on his show every day now. Barf.

So freaking true! I was up yelling hold onto the ball!!!

Several have said the same thing. Same here. It was setting up so early for the dreaded punch at the ball.

You sir, who I've always admired and still do, are starting to become a troll. Is there anything I can do to help?

Looks in a mirror?

That hurts. I'll be a man about it though and look in the mirror. It's always the right idea.

I imagine Todd didn't feel too good reading what you wrote about him, either. IMO, he's making great points you refer to as trolling.

And I've always respected and liked you as well ...

Agree to completely disagree regarding he's making great points. I see a small portion of football posts and a large portion of sarcastic snark commenting only on others' comments.

That notwithstanding I'll spend some time rereading what I've been posting and do some reflection and self-inventory per your suggestion.

The majority of his posts are about finding illogical statements, things that refute each other, etc. Then he often puts a bit of 'dumb ass you' spin on them. I have little room to talk about bashing posters, just saying that is his M.O.

So you think there is any difference between the teams? Jets vs Lions? It is easy to say lets throttle teams but on the road against the Lions I will take a win.

The patriots have in large part benefited from a weak division. For years they could count on going 6-0 or 5-1 with a loss at Miami. You do that and you are well on your way to HFA.

I suppose the same could be said about the Bud Grant teams, but doubt those division teams were as bad as the Bills, Jets, etc.

Man I don't hink Case is enjoying his time in Washington, not that I blame him.

Even when losing here for the Broncos, was much more friendly in Q&A's.

I was thinking of Goodwin. Also Deebo Samuel is a speed guy, albeit a rookie.

Broncos did good to get a third and 4th, giving back a 5th for him in his final year of his contract.

Only 6Mplus salary this year, I assume prorated out.

The Vikings defense has not given up a rush longer than 18 yards in 2019, marking the shortest "long rush" allowed by an NFL team this season.

Minnesota has also only allowed one rushing touchdown this season, tied with San Francisco for the fewest in the NFL

Our defense is a two headed beast. Great players that make good plays, but also. as a team seems a bit out of sorts. This isn't specific to this year but year in and year out. Now I'm no stats guy, but just taking in all comments on here and video of games, I wish for more consistency with this unit. Just my two cents.

Would you trade consistency for uniformity? #6 in everything?

I doubt they will be odds on favorites for anything, but will be a team nobody will want to play. If they can stay healthy and use the grind of the season to their advantage, they could make some serious waves. Especially at home but that's another story.

Speaking of which, we have 3 home games against our division opponents and a bye!

The best way to describe the Defense is "tight but loose". They let teams gain some yards on them, but they play within the game plan and limit scoring and are opportunistic when they need to be. I can tell you one thing, there isn't a team in the NFL that wants to play against this defense at home. Zimmer likes to play percentages as a coach and sometimes that means giving up some yards to limit the explosive plays. I don't know if I like anything that makes you predictable myself, but as long as they win, I am down with the sickness.

I like the balance this team has overall. Are they going to be contenders? I don't know, but they are capable of beating anyone the way they are playing.

On a slightly different but related note, Led Zeppelin was described as "tight but loose". They were the only band of their era that could riff off of each other in a song with no agreed upon direction, and sound tight. Each musician was so proficient they could lock into each other and follow any direction the music took them when playing live. They tapped into their instincts and musicianship to guide them. The audience was none the wiser and were able to enjoy an unscripted evening of audio bliss. Some of their songs could last over a half hour in a 3 hour set. Other bands of the time played note for note like the album and did one hour sets.

So with that being said with my rambling ass and wild analogy, the players on this defense have been together for a long time (in NFL circles), are smart, and can tap into the instincts of the game and what their fellow players are doing and what the offense gives them. Within the concept of the play, we have players that can adjust at all levels of the defense. We are lucky in that regard.

Zepp is classic act, but would have to add Pink Floyd as the masters of free form concerts to give the audience an unique experience with improv and yet cover the bases of all their LP hits as well... another thread Im sure... but... just sayin...

Pink Floyd was fantastic! David Gilmour was on another level. One of the best melodic guitarists of all time. I think Zim should fire up his 8 track with some Dark Side of the moon in the offseason to find his zen.

Getting back to the D. Who runs the show, Zim? I just think they aren't playing up to where they should. Agreed that the middle is not as strong as it use to be. I think Linval has slowed down.
