Bleacher Report says Zimmer extended...

https://bleacherreport.com/minnesota-vikings

"The Minnesota Vikings and head coach Mike Zimmer are reportedly finalizing a multiyear contract extension."

"reportedly finalizing"

Not done yet!

I really don't understand that move at all. Zygi should tell him to make a meaningful playoff run and we can talk after the year.

I disagree. He has a great season and we haven't extended him he will go to the highest bidder. Good coach and better than what's available.

You think he'd leave the team he just built that finally had a meaningful playoff run? To go where? A 4-12 rebuilder? Not a chance. Management was holding all the leverage and they gave it away.

I believe in the virtue of good will. They perhaps could have beat up Zim on his price to continue, and I suppose he could have said that he will retire, but good will sometimes is more valuable than money. You want Zimmer to invest 110% and being that he is the head coach that will rub off on the team. A happy head coach sets the tone for the whole team. Besides, he is worth all that he could get. He's one of the best coaches we've ever had.

I find myself sweating each player's signing, especially now the cornerbacks, but I know that there's not much to it. They are locked in for a certain level of compensation and they want to play football. It's there first contract and they are looking forward to the money. It's a technicality that the team has to get through, though. I'm sure it will all happen in a timely way.

I'm happy that today is the day. Some people on Twitter have been counting down the number of days until the first game. I count down the number of days until training camp. I look forward to the eyewitness reports. It's no longer time for just speculation. We are going to get the substantial reports on how the players look, how they are doing and how they are progressing. I love it. It's my favorite time of the year.

DF he's already had 2 meaningful playoff runs and if not for a shanked 29 yard FG against Seattle he would have 3. If you don't consider finishing 3rd, 5th, and who knows what could have been meaningful I don't know what to say.
I'm fully with Bruce. This year might not be our year. We need time for the 15 draft picks to gel with the rest of the team. So if we don't have a meaningful playoff run this year I will still be glad that we have Zim because a title is coming soon.

You understand that 'finishing 3rd' and 'finishing 5th' are made up things by you right? I get your point in that you believe in Zim and think he's on track - and you may very well be correct - but making up things to bolster your argument probably works against you.

If only 2 teams finish ahead of us in the playoffs excuse me for saying we finished third. If only 4 teams finished ahead of us in the playoffs excuse me for saying we finished 5th. Nothing made up.

It's only 3rd place if the the losers of the conference championship games play each other. It's only 5th place if the losers of the divisional round play each other. They don't. So there's no 3rd place or 5th place.

I stand by my statement. To me we would have won if those were played.

He isn’t saying we tied for 3rd or 5th. He’s saying we got 3rd and 5th like we got the bronze medal or some other thing that doesn’t exist. I’m not talking about a missed FG or any other circumstances of any game. I’m simply saying that there’s no 3rd place or 5th place in NFL football - which there isn’t. Did all the teams that missed the playoffs get 13th place? No. Because that is illogical in the same way it is to say your team got the highest possible rank of all the teams that were eliminated in the same round of the playoffs as your team. This is really simple and basic stuff here.

If your point is that the vikes have had some playoff success I’ll listen to that point. Just don’t paint the picture as better than it was.

I"m a glass half full guy. We finished 5th last year. If you are a glass half empty guy you can say we didn't.

When do they have to be at 80?

Or is that suppose to be the max to begin with?

80 is the amount of players we can bring to camp. Do we have to release anybody we don't bring to camp?

i'm going to give this one to kgdabom...i think he can legitimately say we were tied for 3rd/5th....

at the time, i felt like that game against Seattle at tcf bank stadium had the potential of being one of the greatest vikings' games ever - if we had won...playing against the seahawks, outdoors in frigid temperatures, a tough game-winning drive at the end of the game....i stood up and walked over to the tv as the field goal team set up on the field - i called my wife over to watch that last play, and well...whatever...can't blame Zimmer for that...he should have three playoff victories...the players seem to love him...he gave his right eye for the team....he's dating a bikini model....

Yup, the reversing of the draft order is a legitimate/sensible way to rank your teams performance for the previous year, vs the other teams in the league.
33 - draft position = your teams "place" for the previous season.

If you want to be Mr. Negativity. . I'm positive and we finished 5th last year.

they still don't have things completely worked out....

Tom Pelissero@TomPelissero
As NFL owners push for a deal by tomorrow, the NFLPA board of representatives has a call scheduled this afternoon, per source. Key issues still unresolved -- economics, opt-out, acclimation period, tolling, etc. -- but negotiations are active. Player reps would need to sign off.

They had months to sort this out.

It would be extremely deflating if they don't resolve this.

Do we have any cap experts here? From my limited reading, I thought all the salary cap hit for COVID would be next year because the player's get a certain percentage of the revenue and, without ticket revenue, this would go down significantly this year and reduce next year's cap. Seems like it should not affect this year's cap at all. How would you know ticket revenue for games that have not happened yet?

I am not sure why the owners would want to spread it over 10 years, although an owner in bad cap shape next year could be more willing to look at that idea.

Do the players have much leverage on changing this or negotiating better opt-out details? I do not think they do. This is not a comment on what should happen, but just how I think it may go based on my limited understanding of the current negotiated position.

More details of the agreement that we probably would be more interested in:

First off, as had been previously speculated, practice squads will expand to 16 players for this season. The practice squads were already set to expand from 10 to 12 with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, and now they are set to expand even more in light of the COVID-19 issue.

There's other details about the practice squad, such as protecting players on the practice squad. Of course that's really good for the Vikings because they have so many rookies- rookies with a limited off-season.

More details. I didn't read it all, but I noticed that there will be no padded practices until I believe August 17th and there will be two less padded practices. Cut down to 80 doesn't happen until August 14th. What else is big that I missed?

Players get paid if they opt out of this season.

Details on two types of opt-outs, which are irrevocable and due 7 days from NFL-NFLPA deal being finalized:

- High risk: $350,000 stipend with no offset, accrued/credited season

- Voluntary: $150,000 salary advance, no accrued/credited season

Either way, contract tolls.

It would seem pretty simple and straightforward (and therefor probably endlessly complicated and doomed) to simple reset everyone's salary and remaining bonuses downward by the same percentage as the decrease in revenues. I know that there may be some winners and losers, particularly with bonuses that are structured certain ways---and there could even be some accounting there---but it's more fair to everyone than lopping off big salaries.

Next year there's going to be a lot of cap casualty free agents. I'm glad that the Vikings didn't pony up with the big bucks for Williams.

I am officially calling Bullshit on the 2020-2021 season being anything.. it will not be played..

Healthy smart athletes with families, will avoid close contact with the possibly asymptomatic carriers of COVID.

No amount of money, to those who truely love their families and friends would willingly risk becoming exposed and a source vector for death and illness.

Only the greedy and selfish and desperate to get “ mo money”.. would put “love of the game” above public and team health and safety.

Nothing points out the basic flaw of greed above all else than reopening businesses and putting on sports spectacles to appease the masses who are bored and fidgety.

Welcome to Caligula, 2020 version.

I think your point has merit. I'd say that you underestimate the competitive fire of many of the players. These players use PEDs like they're candy. There was once an anonymous survey handed out to pro athletes in the four major sports that asked if they'd trade ten years of their lives for one title. The majority said 'yes'.
