That is really good news. Hunter made the right choice. He will have plenty of opportunity to hold out before the season starts, if that's what he we chooses to do. By coming to mini-camp, he can dispel any concerns about his condition and if he is ready to go.

Hunter has been smart how he's played this. Notice he has never actually come out and said anything about his contract situation. His agents have tried to stir the pot to get a new deal, because that's what agents do. Hunter can show up to camp, claim that he's never had any issues with the team, and that it's all just been media speculation, and play the season under his current deal without losing face. He never had any leverage to do otherwise. The Vikings brass knows how he feels, and if he plays well I wouldn't be surprised if the team gave him a new deal midway through the season.

Danielle Hunter gets $5.6M of this year’s $$ due as a signing bonus, source said. More importantly, there is now an $18M roster bonus the 5th day of the league year in 2022 — creating a decision for MIN. He’ll either make $20M or so next year, be released or have a new deal.

Essentially, the #Vikings created a decision after next season and moved a bunch of money up for Hunter. A frustrating situation for all was quietly worked out over the past few months. Hunter is now healthy and a big season helps him and Minnesota.

Yes!!! Everyone wins. Hunter gets a bit more money up front and is sitting pretty for 2022. If he stinks the team can cut him after this season. 2021 is now the culmination of the organization's master plan. What we see this season is exactly the plan crafted by Spielman and Zimmer. No excuses. We make our run this year. Ad whatever other cliches you can think of. Ride or die? The chickens have come home to roost? The final countdown?

This is it. We get to see if the organization got it right or not. I can't wait.

I'm trying to figure out what is going on. If I understand correctly they converted some of his money this year to a signing bonus. He doesn't get one cent more pay this year, but he gets it sooner. Next year just for being on the roster he gets 18 million with 20 million total compensation? How much extra pay is that. Does the contract now end after next year so one year was chopped off? If Hunter isn't looking very good this year the Vikings can cut him before next year and save how much?

If I'm reading it right the Vikings didn't cave too badly.

Danielle Hunter didn't need to hold out of mandatory minicamp to see his desires met by the Vikings.

Hunter and the Vikings have agreed to terms on a reworked contract, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per sources informed of the situation. In the agreement, Hunter will see a significant portion of the money due to him arrive much sooner. In return, the Vikings answer a lingering question regarding the status of one of their most important players.

As part of the renegotiated deal, Hunter receives $5.6 million of the money due to him in 2021 as a signing bonus, putting cash in his pocket quicker than the usual base salary. The more significant change, though, comes in 2022, when a new $18 million roster bonus is set to trigger on the fifth day of the league year. That date will serve as a decision point for the Vikings, who can either decide to keep Hunter on the roster at the expensive price of $20 million -- with $18 million guaranteed via the roster bonus, if he's still on the team on that date -- sign him to a new deal or release Hunter in order to save money, Rapoport added.

Essentially, what was once a five-year extension now becomes a four-year agreement, with a major fork in the road arriving in March.

At 26-years-old, Hunter is squarely in his prime, but also missed all of the 2020 season due to a neck injury that required surgery. Minnesota suffered tremendously without him in 2020, falling deep into the bottom third of the league in yards allowed per game (393.3) and finishing 28th in the league in total sacks with just 23 as a team.

When healthy and available, Hunter remains a game-wrecking edge rusher. He tallied 14.5 sacks in each of his two most recent campaigns, reaching the Pro Bowl in 2018 and 2019.

Hunter's value is unquestioned. Now it's just a matter of whether the Vikings believe he's worth $20 million in 2022. Everything is in place for 2021 to go off without a hitch, provided Hunter can remain healthy. Decision day isn't near, but it also isn't too far down the road.

Just my opinion, but I think both Hunter and the Vikings have always known that.

Health is the name of the game. If Hunter is fully healed and ready to rock and if Darrisaw ever gets healthy and lives up to his potential we have a potential Championship team. Fingers crossed.

Did the restructure chop one year off his contract? It expires after next season regardless or sooner if the Vikings don't deem him worthy of the 18 Million?

I'm in the middle on this one. Prefer he plays on existing contract through this season with the promise of entering good faith negotiations next off season.

All this vastly outplaying his current deal is simply not true. In 2019 he outplayed it, but in 2020 he didn't even take the field for us. That is not vastly outplaying his current deal.

He was 1st team all-pro for both the 2018 &19 seasons. (All-pro is the award where the rubber meets the road vs pro bowl.) So he was considered to be among the 4-5 best DE's/Edge guys in the league. Yet (at no fault of the Vikings) is now currently the 13 highest paid DE. As I noted it wasn't the Vikings fault that DE salaries really escalated.

He did get hurt last season but I don't think we can throw rocks at him for that. He showed up to all voluntary OTA's ect and was injured. That's part of football.

That Hunter missed last year is irrelevant when evaluating performance against his contract. Players get injured. A player gets injured, he still gets paid. Deal with it. If you want to bitch about last year, then Hunter can point to the fact that he racked up 40 sacks for the Vikings on a 3rd round rookie scale contract for 4 years. You can't just cherry pick the point in time. You take performance and pay as a whole. Hunter didn't miss a game due to injury for 5 years before last year. He piled up 54.5 sacks in that time. He holds the NFL record for most sacks by a player by age 25. Harp on him being out last year all you want, but the reality is that even factoring in last year, Hunter has been a bargain for the Vikings.

I also don't buy the argument that you can't renegotiate with three years remaining on the contract. When a team goes to a player with the ultimatum to renegotiate or get cut, they don't care how many years are left on the contract.

The only argument that has any validity is the "needs to prove he still has it after the injury" one. The Vikings have pretty well admitted that they have no concerns about the level of performance they expect out of Hunter. If they were concerned, they wouldn't have been satisfied with signing a journey man who had just been cut and using a couple of mid round picks on the position.

The bottom line is that the DE market exploded after Hunter signed his contract. There are DE that aren't half as good Hunter, making more money than he is. I believe he is now the 17th highest paid DE. He wants a fair market deal and it appears he is ready to utilize the only leverage he has. I have no problem with him doing so. Like bohumm said, until the NFL fundamentally changes how contracts and guaranteed money are structured, this how the game will be played league wide. - FWIW, I think Hunter would be better served by attending mini camp and showing the coaches and brass that he is 100%. He can then pick the next camp for his battle if he chooses.

Having heard all the speculative evidence, you've got the jurors nodding and taking notes with that hell of a closing argument.

Even the part justifying negotiating with three years to go is compelling.

I'm sure opposing counsel will muster up their same points while the jury stews the wasted time could be used to wrap this thing up.

I agree the Sweens post is compelling.

IMO everything is subjuct to personal viewpoint but the central issue of the case, pre-injury Hunter vs post-injury Hunter.

Ofcourse, desciptions like, ‘if you want to bitch’ and ‘deal with it’ betray the otherwise sound logic presented ...

We are fans. Fans are emotional. The contract however is a cold business document that requires guaranteed assurances from both sides. I’m sure the team would love to redo his contract right now this very moment because they would be able add in insurance language above the standard ‘what happens in case of injury’ ... since Hunter is currently damaged goods. There’s no other way to interpret it ... until he proves otherwise. The team would pay their player fairly what he deserves on the market but structure it with a much heavier emphasis on incentives and probably an escape clause after season 1 or 2 for worst case health scenarios that wouldn’t be there if Hunter had played ladt year.

Whatever ... let him sign his second sub-standard team-friendly contract in a row, I just want him to stay a Viking.

Unsure whom Sweens is arguing against. It's as if he never even read my post. I could make a motion to dismiss.

I've been sifting through the reports and the contract language and this is my final take barring any new developments.

1: Hunter is not getting one more penny on his deal this year.

2: If the Vikings deem Hunter worthy of $20 million for 2022 they keep him. That would be a huge increase from the 12 Million he had remaining before the restructure. If they don't they cut him.

3: Hunter's new deal either expires after 2021 if not looking good or 2022 if looking good. That's one or two years less than previously.
If the Vikings want to keep him after next season we will have to make Hunter the best offer as he will be a free agent.

He showed flashes (positive) in limited snaps during the season last year. IF I remember right.
