Looking at last years depth chart vs this years likely depth chart, what a difference a year makes:

2020

LDE - Ifeadi Odenigbo, Jordan Brailford
NT - Shamar Stephen, Armon Watts

RDE - Jalyn Holmes, DJ Wonnum

2021

LDE - Danielle Hunter, Patrick Jones II
NT - Michael Pierce, Armon Watts
DT - Dalvin Tomlinson, Sheldon Richardson, Jaylen Twyman
RDE - Stephen Weatherly, DJ Wonnum

Salary-cap analyst Jason Fitzgerald had #Vikings entering today with $11.9 million cap room. Assuming they picked up $3.73 million with Danielle Hunter move and that their four unsigned third-round picks will take about $500,000 or so, then they'd be at about $15 million cap room

How do you go up in cap space this year when picking up 3.73M and signing 4 draft picks for 2M?

It's 500K total that will go against salary cap. Not 2M

Those guys (3rd Rounders)will knock someone off the top 51 so you subtract the difference.

Mond(970K) knocks Chisena(780K) out of Top 51. Loss of 190K to salary cap.

Good point, thanks Mark. It's only the top 51 so in theory it could also add cap space if there's higher salary it's replacing. I will assume Fitzgerald looked and knows what he's talking about. I also forgot that base to bonus spreads that out, and decreases cap space next year/life of the contract.

Thanks Mark for reminder. His number could be accurate and I will assume it did.

Makes it tighter next year (the Hunter move). Hope we roll some space over to next year.

Ok..

Can we land Larry Fitzgerald now?

He would be a nice add in the WR room. Add depth beyond Theilen and Jefferson and mentor the younger guys like Smith-Marsette

He's a free agent and is currently in Minnesota...

That said, it sounds like he isn't sure if he wants to play another year or call it a career.

Sounded like P Peterson has been in his ear.

54 rec 409 yds 1 td last season.

He'd be better than what we have for wr3 but 'd be good depth if JJ or AT get knicked up.

He's only in Minny for his Bell Bank Golf Classic that will raise money for five charities.

I doubt Peterson has even talked to him. He thinks he'll only play in AZ or maybe Tampa. Doesn't see him in MN at all:

I recall Fitzgerald in the past always talked in terms of Cardinal for life.

it's looking like at the end of the 4th year hunter will have averaged about $17m+/yr with the original extension....

I'm assuming that we can still trade hunter if we decide not to retain him in 2022....

there was about $16m of bonus/restructure money that had not been accounted for yet under the old deal...i wonder how all of this is going to affect hunter's actual 'cap hit' in 2021/22....

So was that cap analyst essentially originally saying 11.9 + 3.7 - .5 = about 15 million?

I think playing for his favorite HC and being a SB front-runner might change his tune a bit.

When you add Robinson in the mix who supposedly has a Hunter feel also...there might not be a lineman left from last year....going to be some battles.

We're not going to have worry about playing Zimmer ball with 1-8 point leads, we're going to be comfortably be up in a lot of them.

Fire power and a stout defense. We're going to kill it this year.

Hah hah, so true. Seeing him on the roster doesn't instill much confidence in the WR depth. I'm hoping he's edged out this year.

Yeah, the math doesn't make sense

The words "picked up" here means that they freed up cap space with the revised Hunter deal.

This guy explains it well. But his number is different 4.233 million savings this year.

If I remember correctly Thielen had COVID in December....not sure how that all plays out.

I got somewhat sick for 4-5 hours after the 2nd Moderna.....if you already had COVID the first Moderna shot is suppose to cause a bad reaction.

My impression (purple lenses noted) has been that Weatherly is an adequate starter, at least, especially in Zimmer's system. If a couple of these other guys develop into decent rotational DEs, we're fine. This is why I never understood the over-focus on DE as a potential first rounder in this year's draft. There is also the possibility of someone like Houston coming in as a pass rush specialist, or even a starter, and there are a couple of others out there.

Having COVID is slightly less protective than the first vaccination shot (based on Pfizer data). COVID + 1 shot is about as protective as 2 shots.

So if Thielen had COVID, he should still get one shot, especially with the more transmissible Delta strain about to become dominant.

The second shot often causes an adverse reaction, though it varies by person. Sore muscle, maybe chills (me), maybe headache (my son), maybe sleepy (my wife), maybe nothing (my daughter). I also know someone who had a reaction to the first shot, but the second was completely uneventful. <shrug>

Definitely a YMMV situation.

Plus Novavax is going to submit for approval shortly. That's a somewhat older vaccine technology, if anyone you know is worried about the mRNA vaccines (after 300 million doses, though, the adverse effects are pretty well understood). Or they could just get the J&J/Janssen vaccine, which is less effective than Pfizer/Moderna, but still very effective.

I already had COVID in November. I had the Pfizer vaccine and didn't really have any issues. I bet Thielen can choose his manufacturer.
