Lane Kiffin Gaining Steam As Vikings Head Coach Candidate
Uh oh! The Minnesota Vikings are looking at a college coach. We'll start, however, with some chat about the GM candidates the Vikings have requested interviews for so far. As of this recording, the Vikings have requested interviews from Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Eliot Wolf & Glen Cook. Since this recording, the Vikings have requested interviews from Brandon Brown, Ryan Poles, John Spytek & Catherine Raiche that we know of. We'll catch up on that tomorrow.
On the head coaching front, the Vikings have been linked to Lane Kiffin by multiple reports.

So they've implemented what, a Patricia Rooney rule now?

Doug Pederson

No retreads please.

Kellen Moore.

Like this idea quite a bit.

Eric Bienemy

Former Vikes assistant, But color me tainted by previous Andy Reid tree Head coach that came here. and how much success was Mahomes improvising? I will point out that after a bad start this year the Chiefs offense turned it around after Mahomes started being forced to play with more patience. How much of that was Bienemy?

Leftwich

Benefitted from having a great coach/player on the field in Tom Brady. But I woudn't be opposed here.

Dabol

He has a great QB to work with and a lot of other talented players as well. But I am intrigued here as well. we have a QB great at amassing numbers but wilting when it matters most, but a lot of great skill players..

Anyone from the Belichik tree
Thusfar, From what I can remember there have been Five guys from Belichik's staff that went on to be Head Coaches somewhere else in the NFL. Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennell, Josh McDaniels, Eric Mangini and Joe Judge. None of them panned out so I would prefer to avoid any coach on Bill's current staff.

I am trying to keep an open mind so anyone they hire not named Steckel, Childress, Tice, Frazier Kubiak or Zimmer I will try not to be unhappy and hope for the best.

I don't think Pederson is a retread....I think he had conflicts with the GM and just two years after the mess that Chip Kelly built won the Super Bowl.

i agree...pederson is not a burnout that lost it...he did an incredible job with a 2nd string QB...he broke the vaunted zimmer 'double-A gap blitz' attack....

the problem with many of the others is they haven't been tested at the highest level of coaching - NFL head coach...what if they can't handle it?...they might suck at game management, too....

Pretty aggressive when it comes to offense and 4th down decisions. Hopefully not dumb decisions like Zac Taylor and Brandon Staley.

Once with the Vikings, they would become dumb decisions.

Exactamundo.

Just listened to a Thielen podcast ... said the Wilfs got together with the players leadership group on the team and grilled them for their thoughts for what worked and didn't work. And assured them that a collaborative style was key in their candidate search ... Thielen didn't call out anybody by name but gave the example of someone who thought they knew everything about everything and had to have everything done their way - as the example of what didn't work.

I'm surprised it took that long to recognize that the GM & Coach aren't communicating and the players input was also being ignored. Seems like the team was a lot more dysfunctional than I realized.

I feel like the Wilfs are going to want to snag a pre existing tandem. Before the Dallas guy pulled out I thought he and Moore were a possibility.

Not sure how many pairs are left but I'm feeling a McDaniels Wolf pairing.

This bullshit is on the owners. Hells bells is there any accountability? They extended Zimmer. Based on what. The Wilfs should take a hard look in the mirror.

That explains to me why Spielman was "surprised" he got fired, too. With his little conversations with the bosses he thought he was throwing Zimmer under the bus and he was going to escape to see another day.

Either that, or they were being completely snowed. For example, if they completely trusted Spielman and only talked to him to get updates on how things were going, but he in turn was lying about that (telling the Wilf's that everything is going fine, etc), then it could explain what happened. Earlier indications that they considered elevating him to some kind of VP position, but ended up firing him instead seems to make this angle more plausible. That doesn't mean that Zimmer wasn't also part of the problem as well - for example, if the Wilf's were asking for his assessment, but he was also saying Yeah, everything is fine, just to avoid the discussion, then it might seem to the owners that the GM and coach were all on the same page, when they weren't at all. This might be a case of the the Wilf's being too trusting of their GM and coach.

Well maybe do a no notice inspection like in the military. Land at the airport and bring your people in and find out what's really going on. I mean it's your business for C sake, time to roll up the sleeves and get dirty.

Anyway you go is a gamble. Even former cohorts … there’s an argument for it but I’d rather hire the best personnel / scouting dude for GM and sharp offensive-minded motivational HC irregardless of what tree they fell from.

Be bold. Start our own coaching tree … free of nepotism.

For a “tough guy” he sure had no problem making excuses and blaming others.

Did the Wilf's even know Zim and Spiels hadn't spoken in months?

If not they should probably hang around the building more often.

If you were a new GM and expected to be part of the HC search...wouldn't you want to be part of the interview process?

Seems weird to start the process and what just give the person notes?

Just like many jobs, they can always do a 2nd interview with the new GM before making any final decisions.
I don't see starting the process now as a big problem for anybody involved, and may help weed out those that we don't want to speak to a 2nd time.

At this point in my life.. I’ve lost my investment…

All I really want is a Super Bowl win..

But certain things are still unacceptable..

Nepotism, “old white boys network ”, trading down and seeing an absolute need sniped in front of us because the draft board value wasn’t there or the draft is targeting some guy still on the board, so wh not..

Not getting a pick in on time..,
Overpaying for damaged players or out of Loyalty..

Since I’m getting roasted over the puke that come to the back of my throat for Lane Fn Kiffen…

I might as well double down..

**** any coach over 45 and **** anyone who thinks gender or race has anything to do with personnel choices or ability to evaluate.

Quite honestly, I think the Wilfs are Giants Fans, and the Vikings Franchise is their toy to play in the “rich white boys sandbox”..

It a hobby and status symbol..” nfl owner”..they are about as savvy as “packer owners”.. uh… fans..
