modern nfl offensive analytics reviewed....

minnesota vikings:

3rd downs:
vikings were 26th in 3rd down conversion rate
vikings were last in average 'yards to go' on 3rd down = 8 yards (rams were 6 yards)

vikings were 2nd to last in offensive holding or pre-snap penalties = 42 (rams had 18)

vikings had the longest average 'yards to go' on 2nd down

'2nd down success rate' = achieving 60% or more of the yards needed for a 1st down
vikings were 27th overall
when we ran on 2nd down = vikings were 29th

cousins was ranked 31st in average distance of throws on 1st and 2nd downs

considering the stats above; i think that it's incredible that we won eight games, and we were in a position to win several more....

for me, it would not be shocking if we were to win another 4 games this season with o'connell at the helm, and cleaning this shit up....

Those stats just prove what we all saw..

Weak play calling and a ton of 3- outs..

Not going to miss that..

Exactly! We've all seen it for years. Zimmer was awful.

i've been a vikings fan forever, and for me, last year was the toughest season of them all...perhaps it's because with technology i can watch every game, every play, from wherever i am on this planet - and of course, i have to do that, i have no choice....

it was monumentally tortuous...the games that we lost, and the games that we won...being a vikings' fan has made me stronger in life, and I've never complained...they were always doing me a favor by just being there and i understood that...they gave me dreams and heroes as a child, and as an adult, they gave me dreams and heroes, too....

just give me eleven guys on the field that will play their hardest to win, and give me a workable plan to help make this happen - that's all i ask for....

Been watching this board for years and have enjoyed the great insights and comments of the posters. The Vikings began the same year I was born and all I want to see is a Super Bowl victory for my lifelong team. Excited for the new year and new coaching staff. Skol Vikings!

I'm also very excited for the season as I mentioned earlier I think we're going to get a smack in the face with the reality of just how bad Zimmer was. All that being said I stand by my comment and double down on it - if Bradbury starts at center then I immediately lose all confidence in Kevin O'Connell and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.

I agree about Bradbury, need an upgrade. Kind of like the Twins putting out Pagan from the bullpen.

There is hope that a better offensive scheme, and Bradbury trying to bulk up a bit, will make him less a liability.

Not holding my breath.

Giving up 10-50 pounds of weight, in the middle, one on one, is not a good way to play, and it’s made worse by the “ run first” up the middle, offense… which I hope is as gone as Chilly’s KA offense.

I remember the Rams making Viking castoff Sullivan work for a year or two....there is a chance maybe one in 6 with Bradbury a scheme change may help.

There's a six in six chance that replacing him with an average-to-below-average center via free agent or trade will help.

Hoping the success or failure of our season doesn't depend on the center position. Too much talent on this team to get wasted because of a struggle at the center. Let's be positive and hope the new coaching and scheme helps.

When Mike Zimmer pulled off his masterpiece game at New Orleans in the playoffs he exploited the Saints' terrible interior Oline. Every team worth their salt will exploit us with pressure up the middle. It's that simple. That's why I'm drawing such a firm line with the issue.

Maybe fixing the right guard position will take some of the pressure off Bradbury. I still feel nervous about the IOL. Seeing our guys get pushed back into Kirk's lap before he finished his drop backs last year was so frustrating.

Hoping Ingram is all that...

Don't know how effective Cleveland is beyond the nebulous 'improving'.

Ranking the NFL's top 10 running backs for 2022: Execs, coaches, players make their picks for the best rushers

4. Dalvin Cook, Minnesota Vikings
Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 8
Age: 26 | Last year's ranking: 3

Some around the league still have no problem putting Cook in their top three based on his explosion, vision and toughness. With a full season, he could put up historic numbers. But that is sort of the problem -- Cook never has played more than 14 games in any of his five NFL seasons.

"He needs to stay on the field. The whole team is different when he's in there," a veteran NFL offensive coach said. "He's great and can get even better with discipline as a runner and growing as a third-down receiver. I think he'll show a more all-around game in a new offense."

The Vikings will implement new head coach Kevin O'Connell's scheme, with shades of the Rams' run-heavy attack but also reps for Cook as a receiver -- a theme out of OTAs.

Despite playing 13 games last year, Cook still produced 779 yards before first contact, second best in the NFL. And he recorded north of 1,100 rushing yards for the third straight season.

"I love Cook. Give me Cook all day," one NFC front-office member said. "That burst is impressive."

Cook is extremely effective at full health.

Problem is that's about 3 games. then he's nicked up for the rest of the season.

That might have something to do with Zim running him into the middle of the line 30 times a game. I have never seen a coach more determined to run someone into submission.

Isn't lots of yards before first contact more an indication of the blocking?

You can come up with a stat for anything. I love this one:

The #Vikings finished 8-9 last season.

If MN didn't give up any points within the final 2 mins of either half in their losses last season, they would've finished 15-2.

The talent is there. Need to tighten up 2-minute drills big time, particularly on defense, heading into 2022.

17-0 if they didn't give up any points at all. They should look at tightening that up.

i wonder what our record would be if we give up the 'average' number of points in the final 2 minutes - half and game....
