Just shows, again, how bad the Spiels/Zim regime was, that its personnel in key on field positions was devolving so badly.

They could handle the glamour positions, ok, but a team depth and backup plan gave us Mond, Manion, Breeland..Dozier and worse.

Minnesota Vikings send quarterback Kirk Cousins home from training camp due to undisclosed illness
Kevin Seifert

EAGAN, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings sent quarterback Kirk Cousins home from training camp Thursday because of an undisclosed illness, according to coach Kevin O'Connell.

Speaking after the team's early-afternoon walk-through, O'Connell said the team was not yet ready to say whether Cousins has COVID-19. The team will have a full practice later Thursday afternoon.

"We're still in that process of trying to go through all that," O'Connell said, "and make sure first and foremost: 'What are you feeling? What's going on?' And then going through our in-house process to make sure that if that does end being [COVID], we're on top of it. If not, there's still some other stuff going around that we want to make sure that we're being smart about for the other 90 players and the coaches."

Cousins missed one game last season after testing positive for COVID-19. He also quarantined for five days of training camp last summer because he was an unvaccinated close contact of backup quarterback Kellen Mond, who had tested positive.

The NFL paused its remaining COVID-19 protocols in March. But all league employees -- including players -- are required to follow CDC guidelines that currently call for five days in isolation following a confirmed positive test.

The illness makes it unlikely that Cousins will participate Sunday in the preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, although it was possible he would not have played even if he were healthy. Mond and veteran Sean Mannion have been competing to be the team's No. 2 quarterback in camp.

Kicker Greg Joseph has earned the praise of both O’Connell and special teams coordinator Matt Daniels and has had an excellent camp. In team drills, Joseph has made all but one of his kicks, also making most of his kicks in individual drills. Monday night, he drilled the uprights three times in a row, but it’s unknown whether or not that was intentional as it’s hard to hit the uprights that often by accident. When put in situational drills, he has succeeded every time. In the night practice, Joseph finished with kicks from successively longer distances, going 7-for-8 and finishing with a successful 58-yard attempt.

The Vikings finish practice with a two minute drill, Mond at the helm. He's playing with the threes against the threes and successfully drives the ball 18 entire yards to set up a 60 yard field goal that Greg Joseph makes for the game winner

Judd Zulgad@jzulgad
Mannion and Mond both showing why the Vikings need to get a real backup quarterback. Mond has been sacked three times in team drills and fumbled another snap under center. If nothing else, call Blake Bortles. He knows the system.

The new regime has been impressive, but they would have been even MORE impressive if they had gotten a #2 QB, immediately gotten rid of Mannion, and told Mond he would need to show more to get the #3 spot.

And then either traded Bradbury, or made it clear right away there would be competition for the center spot.

Being new, we should cut them a little slack, but pretty much everyone here knows those positions suck, so a regime that knows what they're doing, it shouldn't take them long to realize that.

A real #2 wouldn't be Sloter Marty plus they needed to see what Mannion and Mond had....same as our center.

I don’t think so. Bradbury Mannion were no secret … its late to adequately address the worst starter and key backup on your roster. It can get done but we may have to pay a premium at this point.

Oh wait a second, anybody will do.

Mond … ok wait to evaluate - as a #3 dev project … if you’re wrong and he’s better than you thought … super. He can compete with your legit #2 or at least give you hope post-cousins.

I don’t know how accurate training camp reports are but they seem to verify Zimmer’s attitude toward Mond. Upping his batting percentage to just below miniscule.

Mannion is 30 years old. There is nothing new to unearth.

And if he had any questions, he could probably just ask Sean McVay who had him in LA for 2 years.

Who was that QB we used to have that telegraphed his throws like an 1890 western union train station operator?

If he is throwing a lot of interception, he obviously hasn’t learned to move DBs with his eyes or he hasn’t learned that NFL. caliber DBs are a lot faster and savvy about route trees than his college level competition.

Not a good look, in a second season Wannabe NFL QB.

This QB situation concerns me, because if Cousins gets Covid, or any injury that sits him for any # of games at all, we are gonna need the defense to pitch shutouts, just to be “in the game”, because we know that our backup, Minion, is NOT an NFL ready, Qb.

I’d take any of the reasonably decent unsigned FA QBs at this time, and even Slotter, over Minion.

We HAVE TO get a better possible QBOTF in the draft..

Sadly, Mond is looking like a wrist breaking WHIFF..as a draft choice.

Depending on how this season goes, good or bad, once again OL and QB are looking like first and second options, regardless of draft position, for draft day.

FA May reduce that, but a lot depends on how KC actually leads us to wins, out of mediocrity.

I would get a running QB as a backup.

If Cousins gets hurt the season is likely over, only chance is to catch lightning in a bottle with a running QB. Unless you could get somebody like Fitzmagic to enter the building.

Which teams do you guys think are in good shape wrt the backup QB position?

Acknowledging the drop off you expect them to be able to hold the fort down 2 to 4 games.

Cousins getting hurt or WWIII are the only things that can derail this season.

Fully expect Cousins on the cusp of the regular season to suffer a leg/life threatening knee injury tripping over an out of place piece of grass.

Trick question right? There aren't enough good starters so by definition, 'good shape' doesn't apply to backups.

Better than us: the other 31 teams. Think about that.

OK situations: 49ers (Garoppolo), Dolphins (Teddy), Colts (Foles), Eagles (Minshew), Bills (Keenum), Giants (Taylor), Saints (Dalton), Browns (Brisset), Ravens (Huntley), Chiefs (Henne), Pack (Love), Commanders (Heinicke)

Teams with untested but highly drafted backups I would take over ours: Titans (Willis), Steelers (Pickett, Falcons (Ridder), Panthers (Corral)

Take it or leave it but still better: Cards McCoy, Seahawks Lock Chargers Daniel, Jags Beathard, Bengals Allen, Jets Flacco

If I'm being truthful, about as bad as us: Bucs Gabbart, Bears Siemian, Pats Hoyer, Cowboys Rush, Rams Wolford, Lions Blough, Broncos, Johnson, Raiders Stidham

Can we argue about the impossibility of Cousins' missing time when he's not out? Thanks.
