I am excited about Dobb's (and Hall's) potential in this offense, but realize that Dobbs will need to pass more on 3rd downs, if he replies on running too much (especially 3rd and 8 or more), defenses will focus on stopping him from running for the first down.

I like that a mobile QB gives defenses more to worry about.

I think this is the most I have ever enjoyed an ugly game of football.

Both of our QBs showed me enough that I want to see more. I liked the little I saw of Hall. The kid was poised and not at all overwhelmed by the moment. Once he got a chance to operate outside of his own 10 yard line, he had no problem moving the offense to the 1 yard line. Really sorry to see the day end for him at that point. I had visions of Hall being the story today. Not to be.

Dobbs, like Hall, was not afraid of the moment. Especially not the last two minutes. His intelligence and ability to process and utilize a ton of information in real time is as advertized. There were some early hiccups that gave Atlanta's offense some short fields. Thanks to the defense, Atlanta was only able to parlay two fumbles deep in our end and a safety into 8 points. A better team would have done a better job capitalizing on those mistakes. I think the mistakes can easily be attributed to Dobbs being unfamiliar with the playbook and personnel. The offense continued to sputter at times, but that was due to an unwaivering commitment to a totally ineffective running game. Dobbs even broke the curse of the Vikings getting a first down inside the 5. Usually the sequence that follows is a handoff to Mattison that loses 3 yards, usually followed by a second run to get back to the 5 and then an incomplete pass. Dobbs has both touch on the short passes and the legs to be a serious threat on the ground. His running ability alone makes red zone defense a much bigger challenge.

So, where does it go from here? Is Dobbs a QB just coming into his own and the Vikings are the right time and the right situation for him? On one hand I can envision it just getting better as he comes to know the playbook and his teammates. On the other hand, we don't know if he is consistent. We don't what happens as teams gameplan for him in the Vikings system. We know Dobbs has a losing record with a terrible team. We know the Vikings are his 4th team in 4 years. The late bloomer who gets a fresh start in the right place scenario does happen. I really hope this is one of those cases.

Mattison's running style of going in a straight line as fast as he can until someone knocks him down doesn't do well in the starting role. I was really hoping for more Akers and less Mattison as the season went on.

Time blurred, and before he knew it, he was on the field, shrugging off tacklers, escaping pockets and listening to Kevin Oā€™Connell map out plays in his ear. Through the crackling microphones, Oā€™Connell described how Dobbs needed to drop back, where the primary reads were going to be, which routes would be happening on the left and which routes receivers would be running on the right. In fact, Dobbs said, the coach was using language that Dobbs had become accustomed to in previous systems to translate into what was necessary Sunday.

This is huge. I can't imagine having a better coach to guide an emergency QB through a game. Zimmer would be like "I don't know, just hand off a lot. Do some QB stuff and don't bother me"

They literally did this for each play and not once do I remember feeling panic that the clock was going to run out.

Says a ton...

Now that I think of it I was never thinking "HURRY UP!" because it seemed like they were moving with pace. Very nice to see.

Right?

And not one wasted time out or penalty for procedure.

Yesterday you mentioned the term "stray voltage" re Cousins. It's so spot on but can't define it. Lost energy, a staleness... I don't know. Regardless, the team had a jolt of energy with Dobbs.

Not just the team but the fans too ... it created win euphoria for everybody without being tainted by pro or anti Cousins bickering.

That is so far below my spiritual plane.

Wait, are you saying there is a, gasp, consensus? Those are mighty tall words.

A brief fleeting nanosecond of unsoiled agreement.

Next week, let the soiling begin.

Next week is a freebie/playing with house money. Expectations are low yet weā€™ll happily take any good results.

What???

If we have JJ and Darrisaw back and Dobbs having a full week of practice, I expect a great game against a team that is also battling for a playoff spot.

We have won 4 in a row because we are a good team. Defense playing at a level we haven't seen since we beat NO in playoffs. OLine jelling. Unsung guys coming through.

I fully expect a raucous crowd expecting and getting a win.

I understand the optimism but Iā€™m not there yet.

We still donā€™t know what we have with either Hall Dobbs. A long way from it.

Aside from beating some chumps, yes we beat the big bad SF wolf but clearly they are not playing their best.

Thatā€™s the playing the devilā€™s advocate side of it.

I definitely like where we are at compared to our first 4 games. Ingram / Bradbury and the defense, the usual suspects, have elevated their games.

We are in a good place ā€¦ its very possible our coaches are a big step up from the Cardā€™s Gannon and Petzing who I know absolutely nothing about.

We are trending up, thats for dam sure. Which is fun.

Just not ready to say by how much. I know nobody is predicting greatness etc ā€¦ but I still think we have a lot more to prove to be considered a good team (which in my book = a legitimate playoff contender.).

Echoing what you say about Hall and Dobbs. Who knows about Dobbs, but it's dang fun!

No reason to fear QB changes. Most veteran QBs go to a new team and say the system and language is very similar to where they left. And drafted QBs do not need a couple of years to learn the system. Time and again they are out there successfully running offenses.

Agree. The Saints are technically battling for a playoff spot. They have had the easiest schedule in the league BY FAR ( https://www.tankathon.com/nfl ) and they haven't beaten a winning team. Are we a good team? IMO the jury is out. As long as we are still in the parity-driven "hunt" for a playoff spot, the NFL is happy.

My expectations for this season have upticked a little..

Our running game sux.. I agree that mattison is not very good, run blocking is horrible, third and short are less a problem, now, with a Truely run capable QB.

The mobility and escapability of Dobbs can not be a bigger contrast with our ā€œ13-5ā€ Quarterback.

Some of the plays Dobbs made, would have been impossible for KFC to make.

Some of the plays Dobbs made by moving and maneuvering in the pocket or behind the LOS, while keeping his eyes Deep down field, were and are impossible for KFC to emulate.

I say impossible, because I have seen ā€œ the ceilingā€ of KFCā€™s ability to move and throw with determination, competitive fire and accuracy, down field, under pressure while moving away from pressure.

Years of it..

The FACT is the Dobbs is more suited to the modern NFL scheme of offense against fluid defenses that are focused on forcing a QB to read and react quickly.

I realize Dobbs is not a long term answer at this point, but I am WAY more optimistic with Hall and Dobbs, than I have ever been since Culpepper.

I have to admit, as much as I would have liked to take on of the QBā€™s that weā€™re available at out pick, on draft day,ā€¦ Addison has panned out extremely well and those of you bitching about KAMā€™s drafting based on Cine and others.. need to wait a bit to see if his other pick can offset the misses..

Depending on how Hall does after he gets his chances, we still need to draft ā€œthe next Tom Brady, or Patrick Mahomes..ā€
One QB per draft, until we find a 10-15 year franchise type.. and with KOC coaching a talented player up.. that day is closer than some will admit.

I guess we'll be going quite a ways down the list of prospects to find our rookie QB next draft. I hope our scouts are up to the task.

We just need to find a Kwesi type to trade with:

The Vikings traded the 12th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft within the division on Thursday night. Minnesota sent the selection to the Detroit Lions, along with the 46th overall pick in the second round, in exchange for the 32nd, 34th and 66th overall selections this year.

I think we need to line dobbs up under center...he seems okay there, and mattison is more of a downhill runner - run him between the tackles with a head of steam...also, chandler should play more....

handing the ball to a flatfooted mattison from the shotgun is not his game...he needs to pound the ball - explode into the creases....

I don't know anything about him outside of what we/I saw on Sunday. One thing he needs to learn (if it's a habit and not an anomaly from that game) is to secure the ball better when he takes off. He had really lose ball security from what I could tell.

I'm not saying it's a real issue. He must have had the world spinning in his head but it's something to keep an eye on.

While I don't disagree with your overall statement, i would advise some caution here. I'm one of those guys (or, at least, starting to become one). There are several stories that point out that KOC was begging him to put the phone down and make the pick. He was trying to get too cute again.
