If Detroit loses next week it doesn’t hurt them. We can only lose if they lose.

Let’s just take care of business at home and let week 18 be for all the marbles.

I guess this rebuilding year is going fine. So far.

For those interested, Chris Kluwe is in Bluesky, doing critiques of special team play (among other stuff).

Insta-critique of Myers 60 yard miss: "Lunged on his second step instead of driving through the ball"
https://bsky.app/profile/chriswarcraft.bsky.social/post/3ldwn23v3xs2o

"Vikings punter needs to get his ass into the kick. No follow through which is why his hangtime is struggling."
https://bsky.app/profile/chriswarcraft.bsky.social/post/3ldwlkp6ngk2o

Very detailed analysis of the blocked punt last week: "This block is on the left tackle (54). Chicago’s been showing jammers coming down the whole game, which necessitates a recount (54 has the L2), but they time it up right where everyone thinks it’s a seven man front except for 54, who chases wide because he thinks the motion guy is rushing. He compounds his error by taking his steps wide instead of straight back, which opens a hole for the inside rusher he’s supposed to be blocking (you should always drop straight back to let twists and loops play out in front of you). The personal protector *should have* been in position to clean up the missed block, since he sent the long snapper to the right (which means the PP has the left A gap), but he’s not looking for someone to come through free like that from what should be an easily blocked side. This is why communication on the line and taking your proper steps in the proper alignment are so important!"
https://bsky.app/profile/chriswarcraft.bsky.social/post/3ldhxq34wig2f (video & thread)

From earlier in the last game: "Vikings punter needs more followthrough. Gotta get your ass into the kick"
https://bsky.app/profile/chriswarcraft.bsky.social/post/3ldhth7orvr2v

"Have I mentioned I really like the Vikings’ kicker’s motion? [Yes he has] Because he’s got a real good motion."
https://bsky.app/profile/chriswarcraft.bsky.social/post/3ldhnpo7uxp2x

He got frustrated during the UCLA/Washington game:
"I DO NOT LIKE THE UCLA KICKER’S MOTION NO I DO NOT"
"DON’T LIKE THE WASHINGTON KICKER’S STANCE EITHER NOPE I DO NOT"
"STOP USING YOUR HIPS TO GENERATE POWER COLLEGE KICKER CHALLENGE GRADE IMPOASIBLE"
https://bsky.app/profile/chriswarcraft.bsky.social/post/3lb237dzgvn2o (***diagram on foot motion when using hips vs. not)

Or way back with Reichard was injured:
"Vikings kicker’s plant foot is too far forward, that’s why he’s pushing it right."
Later in thread: "Sounds like he has some kind of injury, so he’s probably overcompensating with his step in trying to get enough power"
https://bsky.app/profile/chriswarcraft.bsky.social/post/3la3oflfheq2g

One of the responses was amusing:
Q: A plausible theory. But have you considered the Vikings have offended the Gods?
A: Also plausible

Occasionally he'll do a quick analysis of a kick video from various teams. I didn't pull out any examples.

Anyway, IIRC he thinks the Eagles kicker uses his hips too much, which makes him less consistent. Something to keep in mind during the playoffs. Kickers who use their hips tend to have short careers, maybe 2-3 years, because if their timing is ever off, they're finished.

Don't care about Kluwe any more...

By Jim Souhan

The Minnesota Star Tribune
December 22, 2024 at 10:48PM

SEATTLE – Sam Darnold was a man besieged. Surrounded by large, screaming men, his arms pinned to his sides, he couldn’t move, and breathing was becoming a problem.

He had played impeccably all afternoon despite defenders enveloping him like the perpetual Seattle mist, scrambling and spinning in the pocket, firing passes that defied geometry, if not physics. And now, in the gloaming, he was taking a beating.

“I think I slobbered on him,” Dalton Risner said.

Risner plays guard for the Vikings, and he was among those slapping Darnold on the helmet and back, because Darnold had just made the play of the season, if not Darnold’s entire life.

The Vikings trailed the Seattle Seahawks by four points late in the fourth quarter. They took the ball on their 30, then Darnold went to work. Twelve yards to Justin Jefferson. A scramble for 9. A facemask penalty led to a first down at the Seattle 39 with 3:58 remaining.

Darnold dropped back, felt pressure and rushed forward. Jefferson spun and went deep. Darnold, without breaking stride, hit him with the winning touchdown pass in the Vikings’ 27-24 victory, and then his offensive linemen surrounded him, looking like bears ripping bark off a tree.

“I mean, dear gosh, I’ve been a part of a lot of football teams, and it’s just unbelievable, whether it’s Justin Jefferson or him, just for us to be able to make plays like that in crunch time in an environment like that,” Risner said. “Doesn’t surprise me, but it’s just freaking fun to be a part of. We were just saying, ‘Dude, way to make a freaking play.’”

The numbers justified the emotions. Against a quality defense in a roaring stadium in the rain, with the first seed in the NFC playoffs within reach, Darnold completed 22 of 35 passes for 246 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 112.3 passer rating.

Vikings wash away bad memories, win 27-24 for first victory at Seattle since 2006

Earlier Sunday, the Eagles lost at Washington and Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts left the game because of a concussion. With the Packers coming to U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, and the season finale scheduled for Detroit, Darnold and the Vikings can earn the first seed and division title with two victories.

With that last touchdown pass and this game, Darnold has positioned the team, and himself, for big things. This wasn’t Darnold playing point guard; this was Darnold making the big shot with the game on the line.

In the locker room after the game, Jefferson was comparing this team not to the 13-win team of 2022 but to his LSU national champions. “This is the same type of vibe,” he said.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell called this “Sam’s offense,” and noted that Darnold dealt well with O’Connell’s headset failing, forcing Darnold to call a play without help as the play clock ran down.

Veteran running back Aaron Jones described Darnold in the huddle before the winning drive as “poised, very poised. No flinch. He came into the huddle and said, ‘Hey, guys, it’s gonna be loud in here. … He gives you confidence, so there’s never a doubt in our mind that we’re gonna get this done."

Darnold’s best throw of the day might have been the first touchdown to Jefferson, who was barely open yet found the ball in his arms at the back of the end zone. That throw required as much confidence and trust as it did accuracy. “Lots of practice,” Darnold said.

Since Darnold’s three-interception performance at Jacksonville, he has thrown 15 touchdown passes and one interception — and the interception was a what-the-heck fourth-down toss against Chicago.

The Vikings have a succession plan. That’s why they signed Darnold to a one-year deal and planned to replace him with J.J. McCarthy.

Darnold is threatening to erase that plan, if he can survive the celebrations.

“I saw the touchdown, and I saw Sam, and I just grabbed ahold, slobbering, and I don’t even know what I told him,” Risner said. “I think I just kept saying, ‘You did it, Sammy.’”

So happy we got that monkey off our back of not winning in Seattle! Fun to watch Jefferson go off and show that he is the best WR in the NFL. A little worried about Cam Robinson who at times looked very slow and lacked effort at times in my opinion. Guess I might be just being nitpicky. Let's defend the homefield next week and on to Detroit for the showdown.

Get the #1 seed or set an unbeatable record as the highest win total #5 seed.

Really seems like a Detroit honor.

With O’Neil playing poorly as well it’s really something that we were able to overcome it.

I loved the post game locker room speech.

Not hard to see how together this team is. Oh and how much they love Darnold as their leader.

If Sam keeps making plays like that last throw i don't see how you can let him walk.

I can see how some fans are sold. Absolutely playing like a franchise QB.

I need to see 2 playoff wins where Sam plays well to be fine changing course and locking in Darnold.

Of course one has to wonder what the coaches and owners are thinking. Maybe he’s already done enough?

I think they have to Transition or Franchise tag him. His mobility hides the current IOL pass blocking deficiencies.

Cam is just an average LT....I have never heard so much background noise during a game in my life. The can't even cancel the noise in the telecast.

One can hope but average Tackle play on a good team will make him more. I think Rouse or someone like that already on the roster.

I guess I'm on the Sammy train!

Somehow it makes a difference to me that the winning TD throw was not the play called...

Jefferson seeing the opening, Darnold being on the same sheet of music as Jefferson...

That just make me feel excitement going forward knowing how connected they are as QB and WR and that they can make stuff happen in the clutch

I have felt on board with what we have suspected the front office planned: let Darnold get his big contract elsewhere, have Daniel Jones as the Darnold like vet if JJ isn't ready yet or fails...

But, damn, how can we let him walk? Unless he throws 5 or more picks next 2 weeks and are one and done, I can't imagine we don't make him the guy to receive the next $250 mil contract

You do know as well as Sam has played....there are QBs on at least the same or better plane in the playoffs.....Hurts, Daniels, Mahomes, Allen, etc. The team will have to play well also and make plays.....the defense dropped 3 INTS yesterday and the coach's time management cost the team a TD at the end of the 1st Half. Those are things Sam can't overcome in the playoffs.

Sam also had another over 100 rating yesterday....extending his record.

I know…best laid plans and all but this was a franchise move they made bc they wanted out of the big QB contract for a few years.

One interesting thing is how close to a contract extension KOC is. How would going from SB contender with Sam to a large regression with your inexperienced top pick and Daniel Jones?

I think that it’s a real possibility that the decision makers have their minds made up already. They love Sam and want to park a truck full of money in front of him. And if they have I wouldn’t blame them.

I’m willing to trust KOC. Ride with JJM. If JJM can carry the torch and open up 40+ over the next few years we’ll be better for it.

I think you are most likely to see a franchise tag for a year. No way they give a kid that has never thrown a completed pass in the NFL coming off a knee injury the keys to a Mercedes.

Also there is another person with a possible key.....matters what they see in Daniel Jones. I prefer the Sam option for another year of course but they have been the true chess masters since last offseason.....

Sam gives you a chip and a chance as he is playing at that highest level almost weekly.....The whole team has to play at that level though to get thru.

Could this be a more Vikings Viking kind of thing?

Finally draft a QB top 10 for the first time in history. Cast away project comes good and gives you a real question mark going in to the season where you would have a bag of cash to really pick up some real talent at positions of need

Look at the contracts given out last year with many including signing bonuses, void years, etc.

It really wouldn't hamper them and with as much money they have they could work around it.

They resigned Kirk when they had less cap space to work with.

Sam Darnold joined Peyton Manning (2012 Broncos) and Steve McNair (2006 Ravens) as the only veteran QBs in NFL history to win 13 games in their first seasons with a new team. Respect.
