ORIGINAL: Bill Johanesen From Feb 2024: https://www.colts.com/news/nfl-franchise-tag-explained-information-transition-exclusive-michael-pittman Non-exclusive franchise tag: The much more common tag. Players can negotiate and sign offer sheets with any team once the new league year begins, but the player's previous team retains the right to match that offer sheet. If they do not match it, that team will receive two first-round picks from the team that signed the player to an offer sheet. The last time a player who had the non-exclusive tag placed on him changed teams was 2000, when the Seattle Seahawks declined to match the Dallas Cowboys' offer sheet for wide receiver Joey Galloway and received two first-round picks in return. The salary for the non-exclusive franchise tag is lower than the exclusive tag, as it's determined by the higher figure between: the average of the top five salaries at a player's position over the last five years applied to the current salary cap, or 120 percent of the player's previous salary. So, if the article is true then it's rare. Less rare in terms of changing teams, but something that happen on average 1-2 times a year, appears to be the Exclusive Tag is applied and down the road the team ends up trading the player. Like Ngakoue. I think our situation is very rare. I think not even KOC thought Darnold would play this well. JJM was clearly going to be handed the keys next year(maybe this year) in the original plan. Darnold being 27 really makes this situation interesting. He isn't some past his prime guy holding down the fort for one year. I don't think Darnold has shown enough for a team to fork over two 1st round picks plus a big salary. If so, the non-exclusive tag is out. Turning to an exclusive tag offer, Darnold signs it (which isn't a given), $41M in cap is immediately tied up, we sit out early free agency watching the premium talent sign, then we still don't know if a team will come along and trade whatever for him. At that point we have about $36M with 20-25 open roster spots. Seems like an easy way to screw up free agency, in this the 'big' cap surplus year. With cap increases, void years and restructures, we aren't sitting out 1st week of FA if we are going all in with Darnold. That's just not the way KAM and Brez do things. If we go with Darnold on 1 yr. $41M deal, it won't be hard to put minimum base salaries in year one on new FAs and then pay more when he is gone. Cap increases apply to all teams and are absorbed by salary increases so that means nothing. But yes, Kwesi can void year and restructure the hell out of things, be a big spender in the first week of free agency, and backload contracts for 20+ new FAs. That's great. With all that we better come out of free agency with Darnold in the fold one way or the other, the best CB, a top tier CB and S, one or two upper tier DEs, the top NT, a top two G, and a decent G. Actually, take one of those out and use the 1st round pick.
