Marty's stream of semi-conscious thoughts are not worth responding to. Suffice to say, JJM lost the QB battle with Murray and was then relegated to #3 QB... which when combined ushered his departure out of Minnesota. Going forward, I wish Marty luck as he holds onto the futile notion of JJM winning a SB so that he can say "I told you so".

And while it's unfortunate Marty didn't have "most people here" back up his claim, it's worth noting his repeated assertion that I roused up a "cadre" to oppose him is, well, pretty far out there.

Air Traffic Control is preventing the plane from landing and has rerouted it back to NY even though it may have to divert in Wisconsin for fuel. McCarthy may soon be a Packer.

I still find it weird when someone says only the QB is the reason the team won the SB.
Looking at history: Peyton won the SB in one of his worst seasons. Trent Dilfer won the SB. Eli Manning won 2 SB.

Back to the present: Anything is possible yet when the HC, Assistant Head Coaches, and New GM all say it is time for him to go.....well it must be.

3-0
Almost like some lost some sort of bet on JJM this year.

The 3-0 is definitely redirecting the fact that our offense is dead last in yardage per game. Getting it done with defense and ST's but won't be sustainable if we don't quit going 3 and out.

The confusing part is that it isn't redirecting anything. Who thinks the offense doesn't need work? You can't fix the offense with a 3rd string QB making 7 million on the books.

We are in really good shape even w/o the offense doing its job. Solving a problem at a time is just like winning a game at a time.
JJM gone.
Van Noy and another RB signed.

Next.

You're correct that I was wrong when I said "most people here", as during that short window we didn't get someone to support my claim, out of our very small pool of Talkvikes.

I had assumed people here had done plenty of reading, or had watched plenty of podcasts of the many that were saying the saying what I was saying with regards to McCarthy outplaying Murray, or closing the gap, and when Murray played really poorly, then he is suddenly named the starter.

But I was right, and Bill was wrong, and a simple Google search showed that many believed that McCarthy was winning the battle, or that it was back and forth and too close to call, and that Murray was named the starter right after an awful practice. There were no observers of the practices saying Murray had clearly outplayed McCarthy, that is Bill rewriting history to support the coaches decision to go with Murray.

What a weird interpretation. The QBing has not been fantastic, and it's quite possible they would also be 3-0 had McCarthy, and with wins being by a larger margin.

Yes but the elephant in the room is the QB situation, specifically finding a legit starter. Trading JJM did not move that needle one way or the other, although we rec'd some benefits. And creating a revolving door of Practice Squad RBs is swatting a gnat by comparison.

As Jandro said, relying on the D and STs is not sustainable. Related to the 3 and Outs, we are 31st in 3rd down conversion percentage.

I have a sliver of hope that a complete game with a healthy Murray and JJ together can help right the offensive ship. But the sliver is about the size of a splinter. Can't see a viable path/option from A to B.

Phil

I think you're missing what the discussion was about, as Bill is now trying to shift it away from the points I was making about the QB "battle" before the season, and into a discussion about my feelings about McCarthy not winning the battle, and getting traded.

I am not mad about him getting traded, even I thought it was too early to give up on him. I trust KOC's judgement, provided it wasn't some sort of personal issues or feud between him and McCarthy, and I support Teasley, as he has been part of successful past, where he helped a team win the SB with a somewhat mediocre QB.

I was not putting all my eggs into the McCarthy basket, I just felt that they had given up on him too soon, and wished we had seen more from Wentz and or Murray to provide more hope. I am letting go of McCarthy, I was only pointing out very specific things in regards to what we had with a QB "competition".

I have not given up on Murray, if he can improve a few things, and the run game improves, the Vikings are a contender THIS year.

The Seahawks went on a nice run with solid defense and special teams, but their run game was quite a bit better than what we have seen so far from the Vikings.

I'll let your typical false "I am right" boast go into the ether. I'm done with your wild opinions, but will refute your accusations like projecting who is rewriting history.

Your original claim: "JJM was starting to outplay Murray when Murray was named the starter."
Your feeble revisionist claim: "a simple Google search showed that many believed that McCarthy was winning the battle (etc)"

David asked if you went to the practices. Obviously you did not. You instead based your assertion on mere hearsay.

And yes I'll defer to KOC on the results. Which were JJM lost. Lost big. And I'll defer to the regime on the follow-on action. JJM was dumped. JJM is gone.

A simple Google search validated my, what Bill is calling a "wild assertion" that McCarthy had either outplayed Murray, or that it was too close to call from observers of the practices. There were no observers saying that Murray had clearly outplayed McCarthy, that is Bill rewriting history to support KOC's decision.

I don't think anyone from TalkVikes was going to the practices, so all we can go by is from people that observed it, and from people like Judd that documented some things. Those are observations and notes, not "heresay", and many observers and note takers had it as too close to call. Murray last practice before being named the starter was deemed awful by many.

I also defer to KOC, provided it wasn't some sort of personal fued with him and McCarthy, and I defer to Teasley on the trade as well, you don't want it becoming a distraction. So we are in agreement on those 2 things.

Merging literal cut and paste remarks doesn't make it so but you do what you have to do.

Moving on, my blanket response is the HC rightly demoted JJM to where he belonged (#3) and the GM rightly got rid of him while he still had some salvage value.

Just read an article that the Vikings are pursuing a trade with N.O. for Spencer Rattler. Don't know if it's really true.

I can easily show that you were wrong Bill, but this isn't a Court of Law, and there is no need to make you look any more wrong.

JJM didn't lose "big", it was a tight race, where Murray was named the starter just after one of his worst practices.

Moving McCarthy to #3 after claiming there was a "competition" for the #1 spot, seemed a little silly, maybe spiteful, but it may have just been the idea that a veteran is preferred at the #2 spot. Thankfully Wentz preformed well enough to not lose the 2 games he played, got the Ws.

And again, I am in agreement with you on trading McCarthy, it could have become a distraction, and a 5th rounder isn't bad. I don't understand the financial part, does this mean the Vikings have an extra 7 million to now spend on FAs, or to extend a current player's contract ?

Lets stop and get to the facts---not something unverified from Training Camp----we are onto game 4 now and done with Preseason. You are ignoring a couple of things happened after this that you are not using google for. JJM hurt his ankle and then refused to play in the final preseason game.

So after the last 2 things popped up:
KOC wasn't going to play him after the last 2.
Flores called him "White Tua" not because he wanted him around.
New set of eyes Teasley (who had the final vote) chose to trade him away.

Google refute any of these claims?

There are other rampant rumors that JJM camp was going to demand a trade before 2025 if Rodgers was signed. Also PFF said we were close to cutting him.

All kinds of things swirling but who knows what. To bring up what happened almost 6 weeks ago as any reason for keeping him....just a total cluster of chaos.

Not going to refute anything you just posted Phil, and I stand by the things I said about the QB "competition" before the season.

I have moved on, but will defend my earlier points, if you want to challenge them.

I said I was wrong about the board supporting the points I was making, as it appears that people on the board either didn't do a whole lot of reading on the QB "competition", or didn't tune into what many podcasts were saying about it, and it may have led some to a biased view, and then an incorrect assumption as Bill had made that Murray had blown McCarthy away during the competition, as Murray was named the starter right after he had a horrible practice.

Lost big as in the impact on his career from losing was big. Career defining big. Talk about incorrect assumptions.

You could say the Vikings have a competition for #1 QB right NOW, if Murray doesn't show improvement.

I think the Bears will be a playoff team, so Wentz led the team to victory on the road against a team that made the playoffs. IF TB makes the playoffs, then Murray equaled that, or surpassed it, if the Bucs make the playoffs, and the Bears do NOT make the playoffs.

Wentz has the advantage of a year in the system, and the advantage of height. But Murray has passed for more yards in his career, and has the advantage of mobility.

Did trading McCarthy give the Vikings an extra 7 million to use on a FA, or to use for contract extensions, or isn't that how it works?

Agreed, McCarthy lost big career wise, unless he got himself out of a bad situation with a HC that disliked him, and into a more favorable situation, we will see.

Crazy how the stories are now coming out about the behind the scenes stuff that doomed JJM in purple. It wasn't about talent, it was about the way he handled the "CEO" position, on the field. The reports (that ppl are reporting):

1. KOC loved JJM
2. Realized he wasn't quite ready so wanted "insurance"
3. KOC wanted Jones because he was afraid that JJM wasn't ready
4. KAM brought in Howell who KOC was not in agreement with. This was after the failed attempt to resign Jones (who took less money to go to Indy)
5. After his knee injury, the team had a rehab strategy to get him back and he ignored it and did his own thing that led to the year out
_______

That was the tipping point, and after:

1. He challenged KOC in closed door meetings over the offense
2. He did his version of the "griddy" when told not too
3. Was scheduled to play in the preseason and took himself out

Apparently, they were going to cut him but Teas stepped in and said "wait".
