USA Today

NFC North
Packers 12-4 (2): Healthy Aaron Rodgers means another healthy shot at Super Bowl. Defense looks markedly improved.
*Bears 11-5 (5): If defense was slightly better in 2013, this is a playoff team — and D seems signficantly better now.
Lions 4-12: So much talent but so much to prove. Tough to find a lot of wins given lack of improvement on defense.
Vikings 3-13: If the 2008 or 2010 version of Matt Cassel shows up, this might be playoff team. That's a big if.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2014/06/02/2014-season-record-projections-playoffs-seahawks-colts/9767615/

Sometimes these guys crack me up... Completely taking the Vikings out of the conversation, where could this guy get any impression that the Bears "D seems significantly better now"? They look clearly like one of the WORST defenses in the NFL at least in Preseason play..... Maybe there are monsters in practice?

Everything after that loses all credibility for me.

The Bears added some big names so I guess they expect that to translate into big production

Bears I believe were 30th on defense. They replace Peppers with Allen.

If they are still playing the Cover2 they wont improve that ranking much.

Not to diminish the work to be done over the next few weeks, but Chicago's activity up to this point should make things easier moving forward. Headed into the offseason, the Bears needed to address a defensive line that played a major role in 2013 in the defense allowing 5.34 yards per rushing attempt (the league average was 4.10), and did so by signing Jared Allen, Lamarr Houston, Willie Young, and Israel Idonije, in addition to bringing back Jeremiah Ratliff and Nate Collins.

The club also re-signed starting corners Tim Jennings and Charles Tillman, while adding to the safety position by acquiring M.D. Jennings, Danny McCray and Ryan Mundy.

So is the defense better now than it was in 2013?

"The obvious answer to that would be we're healthier [than in 2013] because nobody's hurt," Emery said. "Also, I think we've added some guys at key points in their career. Jared adds experience, production, leadership. Somebody like Lamarr and Willie add some youth, speed and [physicality]. Really excited about Jeremiah Ratliff this year. He's excited about playing. He wants to finish here. He added so much the last few weeks [of 2013] in terms of leadership; unbelievably mentally tough player. So yeah, I think the collective group, we've gotten stronger and we're headed in the right direction as far as we want to establish as a defensive football team."

Booyay

Allen will be trying to sack the qb so he most likely will not even be in the same zip code

Every year a couple of players surprise us with unexpected good play

Also, a couple players disappoint us with bad play

Who are the candidates this year?

I say Wright surprises people

I am thinking Griiffen starts off great but fades late in the year

I hope your right, or, I should say we need this guy to be a good cover S
He has exp playing next to Smith in college plus he has played some CB.
Zim liked what he has seen in OTA's but can he tackle?

Exum is going to that guy that just comes out of nowhere.

I don't really think anybody flat out disappoints, but it will be clear that we have one weak spot left on our roster after the season (CB or LB).

The Panthers look like a huge steal, at 75-1. The Pats and 49ers are overrated.

I don't know how Houston manages to get to 63-1 without a QB.

agreed.

I thought Exum could be the guy we needed at Safety when we drafted him, then he sort of disappeared during the first part of TC, but came on at the end and looked like a beast in game 4!

sure hope that you are right here!

I predict that after beating the Patriots, the national media will write it off as a fluke, as an "any given Sunday" type thing...

but when we going into the Superdome and beat up Brees and the Ain'ts, the media will fall all over themselves to say how they saw Zimmer as the next great coach and how much talent was in Minnesota that was underutilized by previous coaches and that they had really liked Minnesota from the beginning but couldn't bring themselves to pick them to do much because there were too many "unknowns"

But I am really looking forward to 5-0 to start with a major beat down of Green Bay!

Without Bradford at QB, I don't think the passing game is a major threat. Their stated goal is "smashmouth" football, which is probably what the Vikes can handle best.

I'll go with a FG fest: Vikes win 23-9.

I think we could be a 10+ win season, however, I think we need the following.

1. Our D line needs to be as athletic as I think they can be. I've felt Jared Allen was overrated for years. I think our guys can creates a lot of havoc up front, and either no, our back 7 is improved, and Zimmer seems to be intent on adding more speed. But I think we are a couple players away.

Playcalling will help, our guys won't just be sitting back anymore. We may get burnt at times, but I also think we'll have more big plays.

2. Barr needs to be as good as advertised. He is far and away our most athletic player in the back 7. Lavar Arrington predicts he will be rookie of the year. We need him to make plays right now.

3. Oline/Cassel. With a guy like Cassel the Oline needs to pick it's level up a couple notches. We need our Oline to play stellar all year. If they are average, Cassel will struggle, and we will likely see Bridgewater sooner rather than later.

Cassel looked great in the preseason against vanilla schemes, and starters going through the motions for the most part.
