Nothing like starting the Big 10 season with a loss at home.

Yep.  Well played game by the Gophs for the most part (missed FTs were ugly) until a couple poor efforts in the last few seconds.  That's a shame.

Tubby loses that game by 10.

Unimpressive effort (shocker) by Souhan on the game last night.  Basically saying that if Pitino hasn't already started breaking out excuses, he will.

Whatever.  The game was well played and well coached.  The shots just didn't go in: it's that simple.

I thought they played well defensively at times, but without McGary and GR3 (2nd half) I think that's a game we should win.

I'm interested to see how much we improve over the course of the season. I think we will be very competitive in most games.

Walker doesn't seem to be real comfortable with his new body.

I thought that they were too easy to attack and dish off for easy layins. Some guys were too eager to jump in and help. Other times players w/real quicks(Dre Hollins) got beat off the dribble to easy.

Those drives and junk/turnover dishes at the end by Mathieu were painful to watch.

We sure haven't learned how to close out a game.

Good thing we shot well from the line.

Survived.

Got a lead on 3's, shot/missed too many 3's too quickly down the stretch.

I only had 1 e eyon the game most of the way, but we sure did make that look way more difficult than we should've. Nice that we fought back for the win, but boy are we inconsistent.

Indeed. Saturday at Michigan St. will be a rude wake-up call.

Firmly believe that if Tubby was coach, the Gophs would be 1-2 at best, likely 0-3. That was a game they lose in the past.

I expect Ellenson to leave. Tubby got him here, and he's pulling major slivers on the pine.

The problem we face in the short term is that like Kill, Pitino is going to need a couple of years to recruit the players that really fit his system. And unfortunately the big 3 for 2014 were already too far gone by the time Pitino got here to hope to real them in.

Agree. This team isn't talentless, but it's not exactly loaded, either -- at least, not to expect them to run with the likes of MSU.  Man, that team is good.  It will be an accomplishment not to be embarrassed by them.

Also agree that if Tubby were here, we're probably 0-3.  To me, these guys look like they know what they're doing most of the time -- it's the execution (talent) that seems to fail more than anything.  From what I've seen, Pitino is wringing the most out of these guys.  We've seen more improvement in Eliason form last year to this than any player improved in the entire Monson/Smith era -- I can't think of a single player who improved as much as he has from last year.

Yet again agree on Ellenson.  No way he's getting any run this year.  That's fine if he goes; opens up a scholarship that could be more wisely used.  Will be curious about Buggs as well.

What a great effort at Sparty today. Disappointing we didn't win, but man do these guys play hard. I thought we'd get destroyed inside, but it wasn't exploited as much as I figured(Payne being out probably helped a lot). Now the murderer's row continues: what a four game stretch.

Missed it. Saw William hit a 3 pointer for Hope Lutheran HS. Shocked most everyone..including William.

Glad to see the Gophs forced OT. They need to play that hard EVERY game. Would have made the Penn St. game easier.

Happy you got to watch your son make that shot and his reaction! I was watching my son play this morning too, got home just in time to see most of the Gophers game.

Yes, William!
Was happy with most of the Sparty game, but at no point did I think it would result in a win.
Yes, I'm tiring of always being the David in these David and Goliath scenarios.
They do seem to play hard for the little dude, which is a good start I guess.

Ha - David wins in the David and Goliath scenarios. We're more like the best friend of the cool guy who never quite achieves the same status of his friend, although sometimes the pretty girls will give him a once over look.

I wasn't running it out to the conclusion of the tale ...
It's like we are supposed to be satisfied with being the underdog
Tired of that

I totally agree with that and actually said it after the game. I am so sick of having to settle for being happy to have "hung in" with the big guys. Michigan State fans don't have to feel that way. They expect to win and never feel as if just being close is good enough.

Thing is, I feel like we actually have a coach now who can get us to that sort of status.  Tubby brought hope for a couple years, but it quickly became apparent he couldn't coach guys up.

Pitino has already done that, the kids are playing hard, and his schemes make sense (and he seems pretty good at adjusting during a game).

Most positive the program has looked since Clem.

I need to see a lot more then we have. It looks like we get the 3pt or nothing. There is a saying live by the jumper, die by the jumper.
