How many star BBall players go to college their senior HS year? Pretty damn impressive. Can you imagine what his HS Coach is feeling.

Jarvis Thomas commits to Minnesota Basketball
The composite 4-star from Orono is the second local commit in the 2018 class.
by GopherNation Jul 18, 2017, 4:05pm PDT

Minnesota Basketball has landed the second commitment to their 2018 class with the addition of Jarvis Thomas, a power forward from Long Lake, MN. He is also the second local player from the 2018 class who is choosing to stay home and be a Gopher.

What the Gophers are getting is a physical, active athletic and strong forward. He has been turning heads and gaining attention throughout the summer with his play against other highly ranked seniors with high-major offers in the EYBL circuit as well as his play at various camps.

The Gophers were not the first to offer Thomas but they finally extended an offer in mid-June. Ryan James with the story on the offer with quotes from his Orono coach, Barry Wohler.

quote:

“Jarvis is really a freak athlete,” said Wohler. “He is a 6-foot-8 athlete that moves like a six footer. In football Jarvis runs about a 4.7 40 time. He is kind of like a gazelle. Jarvis is so explosive, when he dunks he dunks with power. He can dunk off two feet, he can dunk off one leg.

“Jarvis can guard every position on the floor. Very versatile and very explosive. Maybe, I had one coach quoted as saying, he may be the most athletic player on the national circuit this summer.”
Thomas has also spent considerable time with former Gopher big man, Jonathan Williams. Williams has been working with Thomas since his 8th grade year and it has really helped him to grow in the player he’s become.

quote:

“I thought he had a lot of potential,” Williams said. “Over time, he’s developed into a hell of a basketball player. It’s all deserving of him. He’s a rebounder, shot blocker and a junkyard dog. With his athleticism running the floor and being that work horse – you can get endless things out of him.”

What We Know...

Jarvis Thomas

Ht: 6’8”
Wt: 220
High School: Orono
Scholarship Offers: Oregon State, Marquette, Wake Forest, Arizona St, Iowa St,

A 3-star recruit according to Rivals, Scout and 247 and appears to be on the fringe of a top 150 ranking. After an impressive summer on the AAU circuit, that ranking may improve in the coming weeks.

He has teamed up this summer with future Gopher teammate Daniel Orturu, Tre Jones and Gabe Kalscheur on Howard Pulley. This crew made the EYBL Peach Jam quarterfinals before falling last week. Now Thomas has his college plans wrapped up and will focus on leading his Orono squad with aspirations of a state AAA title.

Recruiting Impact

The Gophers now have a Center and a Power Forward wrapped up in this 2018 class. Both positions were very much needed and the Gophers filled those positions with two very good local recruits. So what is next?

They seem to be prioritizing a guard who can score, whether that be a combo guard or a pure shooting guard. And then potentially adding a point guard. But the addition of Thomas gives the Gophers 2 of the top 5 local recruits in the 2018 class (and one of those top 5 just reclassified to 2017).

The turnaround by the Gopher program over the last year is having an impact on local recruiting. Adding Orturu and Thomas only strengthens the tie between the Gophers and the local high school basketball community. They will pair to be a strong frontcourt on both ends of the floor, with a local flavor.

Two scholarships remain for the 2018 class. More to come on remaining targets and needs in the coming days.

If they could somehow get both Tre Jones and Gabe Kalscheur, they would have a top 5 class in the nation. Looks like Jones is unlikely as he'll probably follow big brother's footsteps to Duke.

Minnesota HS basketball has some incredible talent right now. We can really get some elite talent just by keeping guys at home. The following year Matthew Hurt is a top 10 player in the nation. Hopefully having his big brother here will sway him to be a Gopher, but he (like Jones) can go anywhere he wants.

Its super cool we've locked up the #2 and #3 guys. Getting Jones (#1) would be amazing.

I'm sure you know a lot more than I do about his recruitment. It would be awesome to get Jones, but at least we have Washington at PG. Pitino is bringing in some pretty impressive talent.

I know its a longshot, but playing his summer ball with two Gopher commits can't hurt our chances.

You know they're constantly in his ear about it.

Gabe Kalscheur set to announce tomorrow night. The Gophers are supposedly the heavy favorite. Looks like a great recruiting class in the making.

Gabe Kalscheur
6-4, 180 | SG
De La Salle (MN)

Kalscheur is yet another Pulley product the Gophers are after, and indications continue to be that he’s leaning towards the Gophers. He’s been lights out in AAU ball this summer and has found a groove with Jones, Oturu and Thomas. He’s a major threat from three-point range, knocking down over 40% from behind the arc in this summer’s EYBL.

Man the chance to continue playing with his 3 AAU buddies and be in town where his brother plays NBA basketball, makes it hard to think that Duke is a lock. Come on Gophers.

This from the same article as the above on Kalscheur.
Jones is a national name and checks in at #19 nationwide for the 2018 class. That’s because he can do just about everything. He’s got offers from Duke, UCLA, Oregon and Arizona, among others, but the Gophers are in the mix.

What happens with the remaining two scholarships begins with what Tre Jones decides to do. The younger brother of Tyus is considered a virtual lock to follow in his brother’s footsteps and attend Duke. Should Duke land another point, and Tre decides he doesn’t want a 2-guard system, then things get interesting for Minnesota. Does the allure of playing with his AAU teammates for the local club that is possibly turning a corner while his brother is playing for the Wolves just down the road make sense? Maybe. Not holding my breath, but it’s slightly more possible than it was with the elder Jones.

Gabe Kalscheur Commits to Minnesota Basketball
The 4-star SG from De La Salle is the third local commit in the 2018 class.
by GopherNation Jul 25, 2017, 4:32pm PDT

The Minnesota Gophers, after landing two highly ranked local big men, landed a much needed shooter. Gabe Kalscheur announced tonight that he is going to stay in Minnesota and brings his elite shooting stroke to Williams Arena.

Kalscheur is a sweet-stroking shooter, who ranks just outside the national top 150 according to 247sports, that brings a dimension the Gophers not only need in its 2018 class but could sorely use on the current roster right now heading into the 2017-2018 season. Kalshceur has also been touted as a above average defender capable of containing the opposing team’s best guard on the defensive side of the ball, reducing the load of work on some of his other Howard Pulley teammates.

quote:

“If he can do one thing, he can shoot,” said Rene Pulley, the founder and owner of Howard Pulley. “Everybody does need somebody every now and then that can put that ball in the hole, and he was so instrumental for us this year. When you can shoot, that’s one asset that he has and one thing he’s going to be able to start with and build on to be able to be an impact player.”

From Gopher Illustrated story on Kalscheur and how well he played in the early weeks of the EYBL.

quote:

Gabe Kalscheur earned his four stars at Scout.com because he was one of the elite shooters of the EYBL. “Elite shooters of the EYBL” is a statement that holds some serious weight and through 21 games the numbers back it up. In truth Gabe Kalscheur had some tough outings at the Peach Jam after his game one explosion but those tough days have been replaced by more of the 40 percent three-point shooting that we are used to.

What We Know...

Gabe Kalscheur

Ht: 6’4”
Wt: 180
High School: DeLaSalle
Scholarship Offers: Pitt, mid-majors

Kalscheur joins his AAU teammates Daniel Oturu and Jarvis Thomas as the latest in-state talent to stay at home and play for Richard Pitino in Dinkytown. He performed well as a supporting piece on the Howard Pulley that just finished up play at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam and along with Oturu and Thomas, also includes another local Gopher target point guard Tre Jones, brother of current Minnesota Timberwolf Tyus Jones.

Recruiting Impact

The Gophers are down to one available scholarship for this class. If Tre Jones wants it and wants to bring his Howard Pulley core to Williams Arena, it is his. That much is pretty clear, if Tre Jones wants to be a Gopher then the scholarship is his. But we all know that landing Jones is a longshot (though I’d argue not as much as it was with his brother). So if not him then who?

They’ll be seeking a combo guard. One who is capable of playing the point and playing off the ball as well.

Now if Pitino can pull the upset of upsets and sign Tre Jones, he will build on what is already the greatest homegrown class in Gopher history.

Would it be unprecedented that 4 players from the same AAU team sign with the same major college the same year?

After what Jelly Fam Washington has shown already....not sure if he isn't right up there with Tre. Going to be a fun few years....keep Rick happy is my motto. He is getting recruits.

Should we now be considered a NCAA and upper division Big 10 Lock?

Tre Jones will announce his decision on Sunday. Will he mindlessly follow in big brother Tyus's footsteps and go to Puke or be his own man and join his Howard Pulley buds with the Gophers.

When you can't beat out the Duke pedigree when recruiting a Minnesota born and Raised player who had the chance to join three of his teammates and stay in town where your brother plays NBA basketball something is really wrong. Yes I know Duke is where that said brother played and won a national title.
