Typical knock-down-drag-out brawl in the DECC
Got it done.
One more to go.
This team is starting to get it, starting to realize how much work it takes to be a Gopher hockey player.
Its like being a Laker or a Yankee. You better bring it every night, because your opponent hates you.
Some of these young guys don't get that for a long time.

What an addition Jacob Cepis has been. I really hope we get another year of Cepis-Schroeder-Budish.

He is a hoot to watch.
Love how he competes, we need more of that, not less.
Such a great compliment to anyone he plays with.
That constant motor is so important in today's game.
Great pick-up Pete.

And, as usual, follow up a good Friday night by taking one on the chin Saturday night.
Nothing but a .500 club.

Why did they even bother to show up? Pee Wee teams have better passing and discpline, for crying out loud I saw four players chasing the puck in the corner on a penalty kill. A power play is supposed to be an advantage, this group runs into one another and has zero concept of spreading out and breaking down the box. They completely lack flow, timing or simple fundamentals such as making or recieving a pass, shot accuracy or simply executing a shot without fanning.

Team has talent, they can skate with anyone, have a tough schedule, but simply put dont do the little things well to be a elite team. 3 more wins this year against top teams, lets say 1 out of 4 from DU, a split with SCSU and the ability to protect one of the 2 goal leads at home aginst UMD and they would control their destiny into the NCAAs, and be fighting for 3rd place this weekend.

They are still alive believe it or not without having to win the WCHA playoffs, super long shot but if they can sweep this weekend, advance to the final five and take no less than third, they still could squeeze in. Most likely they will have to win the playoffs but you never know.

However, too many times they have had efforts like they did Saturday which will be there downfall this season, the inability to score and win a clutch game. Lucia is a very good coach but It is time to go in a different direction after three years of very medicore Gopher hockey.

For sure.  This Gophers team is foreign to me.  We use to blow the roof off of teams with our offense.  Quick strike, long range breakout passes, dominating with odd man rushes..you name it.  Now?  Like you said Jason, we have no flow at all.  We also lack a true sniper.  In the past we had not only one, but multiple guys that could kill you.  Lucia won Nats on a core of solid fundamental guys but also had guys that could bury it.  He seems to have gotten gun shy with the wave of early NHL declaring guys:

Vanek
Okposo
Kessel
Johnson
ect.

I also think this team has been snake bitten by our "stars".  They don't perform like it at all.  Who on this team really has shown the talent to play at the next level?

Schroeder?  Not likely.  To light in the breezers but was supposed to be a big time recruit.
Leddy?  Possible but only shows glimpses of dependable play.  Has never shown the ability to dominate like past U defenders (Leo, Ballard, Martin, Johnson).
Ness?  Please, don't even get me started there and he was also our bigtime recruit a couple years ago.
Buddish?  Probably the best chance based on his size and skill.

It's pretty telling when your most dependable guy is the coaches son, grinder (3rd line guy at best).  Good for Tony.  He works extremely hard.  Bad for the program

Can you imagine how bad this roster would get taken apart by the 2001-2002 team?

Nick Anthony
Ballard
DeMarchi (who would chop your head off given the opportunity)
Erickson
Flemming
Leo
Koalska
O'Leary
Martin
Johnny P
Potulny
Riddle (who at 5-10/170 ~~ that may be generous on the inches~~ had more grit than anyone on this team)
Smaagaard
Judd Stevens
Taffe
Tallackson
Weible
Mr. Wendell
Welch

Wow.  Then the next year he added Vanek who is a legitimate star in the NHL.  That was an era I miss

Breezers now that is old time hockey!!!

Schroeder is a good player, just isnt dominant. Leddy, hard to say, still real green, but also hasnt lit it up. Ness might be a forward, why wasnt the Guentzel kid recruited?????? Buddish is forced into action as they have no scoring from the upperclassmen. Flynn is disturbing, Carmen is a moron on skates with his stupid penalties combined with wild shot. Barribal would have helped slightly. Fairchild drives me crazy. Fischer has actually been solid the last couple of weeks, however, prior to that he has benn a nightmare to watch. Lucia is what he is, lots of heart but is a role player with good PK skills.

Wehrs concerns me every time he steps on the ice, Helgeson looks like he cant skate at all. Birkholz has moments, Sachetti is inconsistent, Hanson hard to say, Hoeffel has disappeared, White has been decent.

I would like the lines to be...

Lucia-Schroeder-Cepis...they might just find a way to light the lamp 4 times a weekend.

Budish-White-Hoeffel...get Hoeffel back on track. I think they would improve the O Zone pressure from the 2nd line.

Birkholz-Larson-Sachetti....Super sophs+ a frosh might just net a couple per weekend, will they play D?

Hanson-Carmen-Flynn...Limited minutes for a couple of disappointing seniors, less time Carmen is out there the less chance for a stupid penalty. Hanson is 10th forward who moves into a third line role if any of them are loafing.

Hopefully we'll get to see it.  Fingers crossed.  Directv has some random FSN channel I've never seen before showing it.  That's usually not a good thing.

Call of the night from Burt and Burt.  Play was just stopped in the middle of game, obviously a penalty coming of some sort.

Burt:  "Whoa nelly.  There was too many men on the ice for the Sioux.  Do you think the refs call it or put the whistle away?".

Burt:  "they may, they are letting them play".

Did the Sioux go out and celebrate and drink too much after Friday night's victory?  They looked like they were trying to handle a magnetic puck with magnetic sticks and the poles of the magnets were the same.

The Sioux must have taken a play out of Childress playbook last night for  too many skaters on the ice.

Dead in the water.
Embarassed Fri, don't quit Sat, what happens Sun?
THAT was the first gritty win for this program in years.
Would have been pretty easy to fold tents and go home.
(and yeah, its sad that is what we are playing for at this point)

FSN isn't actually gonna air a Wild postgame show instead of the Gophers game, are they?

TIE GAME! Beating the Sioux would make a crappy season an OK season.

Any chance a Sioux loss would keep them out of the NCAA tourney?

Dubay must not be there tonight....cuz we'd see him on the ice in the ref's face right now. Woog really POed that the Sioux cheapshot artist hasn't been kicked out of the game.

Understatement of the year "This is not a smooth running power play." 5 minutes of bobbling the puck around. The Sioux had the only scoring chance in the entire 5 minutes.

I hope between periods Lucia is filing a grievance with the head of the refs.

It would be SO sweet to come back and beat them in the third period and shut up those fans. Can you tell I'm bitter?

People in Grand Forks have nothing better to do than go to hockey games and take obnoxious to historically high levels.

I must not understand what a penalty is because the only thing that looked like a penalty on that one was the acting job flop by the Sioux player.

Who was the dummy in charge at FSN that decided it was more important to broadcast a women's hockey game instead of the most important Gopher men's hockey game of the season? Seriously. What are they thinking!?!?
