The Gophers have a better chance of losing to New Mexico State or Miami (OH) at home than they do winning at Northwestern, Purdue or Michigan.

Ed that was a great article and could be used by everyone in the walk of life

Being on oxygen and unable to do everything I want, I could feel sorry for myself but there are so many people in worse conditions like that little girl

I think they'll win 1-2 "big games" as surprises Matt. I just think Kill will have his kids up and ready to play every game, and a team or two that is better than the Gophers will sleep on them.

We shall see.

I see Nebraska and Michigan pretty much killing everyone else this year though. The conference switch/timing couldn't have worked out better for Nebraska.

No they don't.

These are the Gophers. Everyone seems to be forgetting that. We lose to borderline D-II programs all the time.

You guys are setting Kill up to fail with those types of expectations. Tell me the 4 conference games they will win.

Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois and Iowa are all very beatable. Michigan and Michigan St are not out of reach. Wisconsin and Nebraska would require hercuean upsets. I can see 4 wins in that schedule. I am still of the opinion that the Brewster Gophers had more size and speed than any lineup in 10 years. There is also a greater depth of athletes. A good coach could have taken last year's team to a midling bowl game. Kill has already transformed the culture and has his players buying into it. That's half the battle.

I pretty much agree with this. And with Wisconsin being a rivalry game, anything can happen (ala Iowa last year). Remember, we are currently on a two game conference winning streak!

I still contend two things:
1) Last years team was talented enough to win the 6 regular season games I predicted they would
2) Kill inherits a MUCH better team than the one Brewster did.

If we are only thinking to win 2 or 3 games this year, then hell....redshirt McKnight and Lair on offense, along with Kirksey, Tinsley, and Stoudermire on defense and try to win Legends in 2012.

blind homerism? i barely care about them at this point. i just think they're going to be very good this year; the talent is coming along and i think Hoke will be able to put everything together in a relatively weak year in the Big10. Especially with the inevitable Ohio State dropoff. Nebraska will be easily the class of the conference though. IMO.

Alright, I know you were a fan in the past and when you like a team, they are usually going 82-0 (lakers, duke ect...).

That being said. Their out of conference schedule read like a Glen Mason one. That's where they racked up enough wins to get a cheap bowl bid (where they were mauled by another mediocre team). They went 3-5 in the Big 10 and of those 3 wins, only one could be considered a good one (Purdue on the road).

With that sort of year you think they are going to be class of the conference this year along with Nebraska????

They start with 4 patsies again in non-con (although, ND could beat them like any year). I expect them to start off 4-0 and then 5-0 based off of this:

Minnesota TBA TBA
October 8 @ Northwestern 7:00 PM BTN
October 15 @ Michigan State TBA TBA
October 29 Purdue 12:00 PM TBA
November 5 @ Iowa TBA TBA
November 12 @ Illinois TBA TBA
November 19 Nebraska TBA TBA
November 26 Ohio State

At that point they are staring at 5 losses easily. Putting them at 3-5 in the Big 10 AGAIN~

Umm, Duke and the Lakers have been the class of their sports respectively over the last 3 years or so. I've said nothing outside of reality on both fronts.

Like I said, I barely care about Michigan or college football at this point (and do root for the Gophers, btw). But I disagree. I think Michigan will be something like a 9 win team this year. Ohio State is going to be down significantly IMO. And I think the rest of the conference is mostly weak right now. Nebraska will be the true stud team in the conference IMO and has a great shot to be undefeated this year.

I see your point, but you're being too harsh. Last year's debacle still won three games. An improvement on that isn't outrageous to expect.

Five wins seems about right, and I'd be happy with that. If you're competitive against Wisconsin, so much the better.

Anything more than that is gravy.

Skilz, I had a pretty close look at the Michigan football program for the last three years, and I'm way closer to Jeff than you on this one. Denard Robinson is a stud, and I have no doubt they will score points. But their defense was so bad last year, and the cupboard looked pretty bare (thanks Rich Rod). Plus, Rich Rod has been recruiting his type of players for the last three years, not Hoke's type of players. I think an adjustment period will be necessary. They have enough talent to snag a bowl bid, but I'd be surprised to see them win 9 games.

Oh, and the irony? I think Rich Rod probably would have won 9 games with the team this year. Hoke will just need some time to get his players and install his system.

Could be Pete. I could see either way.

My main point is that once again I don't think the Big10 will be all that good this year, and Nebraska SHOULD have little trouble going undefeated IMO.

I'm a "Big 10 fan" I guess if I have to pick a conference, but the SEC is still the dominating force in college football by far. There's just no denying it.

Looks like Max Shortell is going to be the #2 QB. Parish was #2 in spring practice and likely slides to #3. That leaves Alipate either looking at a transfer or a postion switch.

What do you mean? He weighed in a whole 5 pounds less than in Spring ball...a slim, trim 276.

Unless.....maybe he stepped on the scale BEFORE hitting McDonalds this time, I don't know.
Could be a position change. We lose both starting DT's next year. A few more supersized value meals and who knows....

The bad news of course is that...potentally....we only get Shortell as a starter for 2 years instead of 3 because he doesn't redshirt. Did it take him all of one week to win the #2 spot? I dont think he was even here in the Spring?

The Gophers fumbled at least eight times during Tuesday's scrimmage, MarQueis Gray was thrown off the field by Jerry Kill at one point, and every positive play seemed offset by a couple of bad ones.
And that's the good news.
Center Ryan Wynn rolled his ankle three plays into the scrimmage and spent the rest of the three-hour session at TCF Bank Stadium on crutches, his left leg in a boot. Troy Stoudermire took a knee to the head and appeared dazed on the sideline as he tried to clear his head. Even long-snapper Jake Filkins was shaken up after also being hit in the head.
But nobody appeared too alarmed. Annoyed? Definitely. Kill had harsh words for his players several times during the practice, at one point telling Gray, his starting quarterback, "MarQueis, you're killing us right now" for fumbling a couple of snaps. But the mistake-ridden play, particularly on offense, is standard for a first scrimmage. "If we were perfect, then I'd think something's wrong," Kill said.
A handful of highlights:
Brock Vereen intercepted a Gray pass and took it almost 60 yards, but was caught from behind by Duane Bennett at the 3-yard line.
Bennett popped outside for several big gains, at least four of double-digits, and used a spin move to get into the end zone at one point.
Walk-on Jordan Wettstein, in the competition for the place-kicking job, nailed a 50-yard field goal.
Freshman David Cobb impressed Kill with his toughness running inside, particularly near the goal line. "Give me my touchdown-maker," he said at one point when he was disappointed with another back.
Receiver Ge'Shun Harris, after being benched for a few series for lining up wrong, redeemed himself with a spectacular 37-yard catch -- he knocked the ball into the air, then came down with it -- near the goal line.

If Gray was better I think he would have replaced Weber. Brewster was over his head, but I think he would have made the move to save his job. Gray just can't pass
