Whoa

Iowa?

Do they know Ferenz is 97?
Talk about polar opposite atmospheres.
I respect Ferenz, esp his longevity. Just sayin. that's pretty impressive for him to pull that off.

Green is a defensive back who has been asked to cover a lot of ground at the high school level, from lining up in the box to playing man coverage over the slot receiver. He has acquitted himself well in each role, showing the tackling and physicality needed to be effective in run support and the ability to diagnose plays quickly in coverage and jump routes. And Green ran a 6.49 in the 60 and 10.62 in the 100-meter dash, per 247 Sports. As always seem to be the case, his technique could use some work, but his I.Q. and instincts will serve him well in making the leap to college.

That number would've won the 2019 Minnesota State Championship.

When doing the rankings, they only count 3, 4 and 5 star recruits.

For example, we have Zero 5*, Four 4* and Eleven 3* right now, for 15 Commits.

Ohio State, by comparison has Three 5*, Eleven 4* and Three 3*, for 17 Commits.

Illinois has Two 3*, for 2 Commits...

10.62 100 meter is basically a 10.0 Hundred yard dash. Not as meaningful as it used to be, but still pretty damned fast.

And the 4 star parade continues. Mar'Keise "Bucky" Irving, a 5'10" RB from Illinois is the latest 4 star recruit to commit to the Gophers.

I bet that moves us back ahead of Iowa. Take that Ferenz, you dick.

Nice. These kind of classes can lead to big 10 contention and annual top 20 finishes or much better.

Hope this group of kids is ready to help when they play in 2021.

Emmert/NCAA is saying no classes on campus, no sports in the fall.

Claims he has all conferences on same page.

Nope
Big 12 says online classes are good enough.

The Gophers now have five four-star recruits committed, and Irving is the fifth player out of Illinois to pledge to play for Minnesota. Fleck and co. also have verbal commitments from three of the Top 10 ranked recruits in the state Illinois this recruiting cycle.

247 Sports Scouting Report:
Compact back who does have some natural bulk to him but still needs to add more weight for the next level. A very good athlete who has excellent short-area elusiveness. Does a nice job of breaking tackles and staying on his feet through contact. Runs through arm tackles, has a nice stiff-arm and also runs with determination. Finds his way through traffic. Good burst and despite no record of verified times, can break long runs although he may not have elite top-end speed. Solid as a pass catcher but can still improve in that department. Can play in any scheme and has a skill set that projects well to college. Likely to be a lead back at the Power 5 level and has the tools to end up having his name called in the middle part of the NFL Draft.

We're still 7th (199.28), but Iowa dropped to 8th (192.85).

According to 247 Sports, Minnesota has never signed more than four blue-chip players (5-star or 4-star players) in one class (per their 247 Composite rating). It has already reached five bluechips in this class, with (I believe) 8-10 more scholarships available.

Added ‘leg work’ helped Gophers’ Fleck land four-star running back

By ANDY GREDER | agreder@pioneerpress.com | Pioneer Press
PUBLISHED: May 13, 2020 at 12:33 p.m. | UPDATED: May 13, 2020 at 3:14 p.m.

Hillcrest High School football announcer Don Houston has a simple touchdown call for when Mar’Keise “Bucky” Irving scores during home games in suburban Chicago.

“BUCKY FOR THE TOUCHDOWN!”

For how concise and traditional Houston describes it on Friday nights, his words somehow have been used against him in his English classroom on Monday mornings. His students — the fans, cheerleaders and players hearing him on the loudspeaker — say the call has become a bit of a broken record.

“Some of my students would tease me,” Houston said. “A lot of students … say all they would hear me say is ‘Bucky this’ and ‘Bucky that.’ ”

“Well, someone else has to do something!” Houston said in an interview with the Pioneer Press. “Eventually those guys did step up and the rest of the teammates played really well, also.”

But Irving wore out Houston’s touchdown call last season. In 12 games, Irving scored 28 touchdowns — 22 rushing, four receiving, one passing and one on a punt return. That prolific total helped make Irving one of the top prospects in Illinois and receive scholarship offers from 10 Big Ten programs.

With that stiff competition, Irving pledged to the Gophers on Saturday, becoming the U’s fifth prospect in the 2021 class with a four-star rating, according to 247sports.com. His final four college choices were Minnesota, Purdue, Utah and Texas Christian.

“Purdue really recruited him hard,” Hillcrest football coach Morgan Weaver said. “I would say that Minnesota was harder on him early on, so I think the difference is (Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck) put in a lot more leg work.”

Fleck and Purdue coach Jeff Brohm have established a rivalry that includes an icy and brisk postgame handshake between them after Minnesota’s 38-31 win in West Lafayette, Ind., last September. Irving could serve as an added layer to that feud for years to come.

While Irving, who couldn’t be reached for this story, kept details about his recruiting process under wraps, Weaver said he often heard how much he liked Fleck.

“He had nothing but great things to say about him,” Weaver said. “You could see that the Minnesota program is projecting upward. It’s a special place up there, and P.J. has things going in the right direction. I’m sure that is what helped attract him to Minnesota.”

As a high school sophomore, Irving beat out a senior for the starting running back role at Hillcrest, a Class 5A school within Illinois’ eight-class system. In a homecoming matchup against rival Lemont, he rushed for a stunning 303 yards and scored all of the Hawks’ touchdowns in a 27-7 win.

“After that game is when I really, really knew that this kid is going to be special,” Weaver said.

As a junior, the 5-foot-10 and 185-pound back rushed for 302 yards against Lemont, running for two touchdowns and passing for another in a 32-26 win.

But it was Irving’s interception while covering Lemont’s 6-foot-2 star receiver Anthony Sambucci that most impressed Houston in the press box. Sambucci, now a player at Western Michigan, had beat Irving on a double move, but the pass was slightly underthrown.

“(Irving) had just made a spectacular play on offense, then he comes and guards Lemont’s best player on defense and he got a pick,” Houston recalled. “He was dead tired but he almost ran it in. … That was one of the bigger plays that I’ve seen him make.”

Bucky this, Bucky that.

“I’ve had the pleasure of seeing a lot of good players come through Hillcrest and he is probably the most electric player I’ve ever seen,” said Houston, who has been at Hillcrest for 20 years. “Some of the things he’s done is insane.”

Houston also is Hillcrest’s boys basketball coach, and Irving led the team in scoring with 16 points a game as a junior. Four players, including Irving, have received recruiting interest from mid-major programs. They have state championship aspirations this winter.

“He brings the football mentality to the basketball court, and a lot of kids can’t deal with that mentality and that toughness,” Houston said.

Irving was a basketball player first, transferring from powerhouse Morgan Park during his freshman year. When Irving was a sophomore, Hillcrest’s football team went 12-1 and advanced to the Class 5A semifinals in 2018; in his junior year, the team finished 10-2 after a trip to the state quarterfinals.

Central Michigan was the first school to offer Irving a scholarship, and Wisconsin was his first Big Ten offer, Weaver said.

“Then everything just skyrocketed from there for him, which I expected,” Weaver said. “He didn’t really believe me when I told him it was going to happen. He didn’t really know too much.”

Michigan, Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska, Indiana, Maryland and Illinois also offered scholarships. The Gophers had an added boost with Naperville, Ill., four-star athlete Sam Jackson, a childhood friend with Irving, already in the U’s class for next year.

As for origins of the “Bucky” nickname, Irving has had since before he came to Hillcrest. Weaver heard a story about how it might have been because Irving had buck teeth as a kid, which, if true, would fit seamlessly with Goldy’s toothy smile.

Fleck picks up another 4 star. Cameron James, a 6'8" 280 lb OT from Illinois picked the Gophers over Michigan State, Purdue, Indiana, Missouri and a few other power 5 schools. James is the 8th ranked player in Illinois.

The Gophers also got 3 star OT Austin Barber of Jacksonville, Florida. He goes 6'7" / 315

Fleck really getting a head of steam in recruiting.

Appears the recruits really pay attention as to where other good recruits are signing and it is beginning to snow ball.

talk about a coach dragging a program out of the ashes from 50 years of mediocrity. Pretty amazing.

Looks like James is a 3-star on the composite, but a 4-star on 247’s own rating. Really nice to start seeing O-Linemen added.

Get to know Cameron James

Height: 6’8”
Weight: 280

Power 5 Scholarship Offers:
Arizona, Indiana, Iowa State, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan State, Missouri, Purdue, and West Virginia

247 Sports Composite Rating: .8748

247 Sports Scouting Report:

Massive frame with long arms. Developing in the lower body still but has grown into a Power 5 offensive tackle prospect. Former basketball player who moves around the field easily for someone of his size. Runs very well when asked to pull and make blocks on the move. Has become more of a finisher and naturally overwhelms defenders with size and strength. Can bend, but needs to work on being more consistent with his pad level. Further along as a run blocker than pass blocker right now. He has great tools for pass pro, just needs more live reps there. Generally raw after not playing offensive tackle early in his high school career but upside is there for him to start at the Power 5 level and his tools are that of a prospect that eventually could play in the pros.

https://www.thedailygopher.com/2020/5/24/21268745/minnesota-football-recruiting-2021-cameron-james-offensive-line

Get to know Austin Barber

Height: 6’7”
Weight: 315

Power 5 Scholarship Offers:
Duke, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Utah, and Vanderbilt

247 Sports Composite Rating: .8519

Scouting Report:
With his 6’7”, 315-lb. frame, Barber brings power and physicality to the Gophers’ offensive line. On film, he has consistently finished blocks and shown that he is adept at locating targets in the second level. Barber can clear huge holes or seal the edge to allow the running back to pick up chunks of yards on the outside. He is certainly a road grader in the ground game, but he also has the ability to adequately move and get out in front of a play, like a tunnel screen, to open up lanes for the ball carrier. Barber’s highlight reel might even be better than Cameron James’.

Being Memorial Day I don't think the sites have updated for the additions of James and Barber. I could be wrong. Everybody shows us with 18 commits. 247 has us 9th with 5 4*and Rivals has us 8 in the country but only 2 4* recruits and a 3.11 average. Want to look at this again tomorrow see if it's updated.

I feel like I keep seeing stuff like this. Do youngsters these days even know what the word "committed" means? It happens often enough that I just wonder if they all need to take a step back and not "commit" until they're ready to, you know, commit.

Losing Regis still keeps us 3rd/9th.

Michigan moved up to 6th overall (218.27), they signed a 4* OLB that jumped them 8 points.

We're at 202.54 now. Iowa is just behind us at 198.31

Its refreshing to not have to make up an excuse not to attend my wife's co-workers second-cousins third wedding of the decade.
I could stay like this (some of the rules) … forever. Please. Lets.
But back to Gopher Football

As we said awhile back. Just like us, get legit, and now we get blindsided by a pandemic.
Good thing is, A guy like Fleck can probably outlast a virus like this.
So damn excited to see where this team can go with its new look and its new attitude.
