Hmmm
Its almost like we all should have waited for that Spring schedule they proposed
Especially HS
Many who screamed about losing their senior season, got it started, and then wound up with 2 or 3 games.
Good call.

All seniors have been given an extra year of eligibility.

I agree on waiting until spring though. The Ohio State University had to have its season now though. And what Ohio State wants, Ohio State gets.

was referring to HS seniors

Mea culpa

A wide receiver who once ranked as a top-70 national recruit transferred to the Gophers from Texas A&M on Wednesday.

Dylan Wright announced his commitment to the Gophers on Twitter. The 6-4, 210-pound freshman still has four years of eligibility remaining.

Wright was a consensus four-star recruit and an Under Armour All-America coming out of West Mesquite (Texas) High School in 2019. Ranked as the nation's No. 70 recruit and No. 12 receiver in the 247Sports composite index, he had offers from such schools as Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State — and the Gophers.

At Texas A&M, Wright played sparingly the past two seasons without catching a pass. He redshirted in 2019 after playing in four games and played four games this season on the fifth-ranked Aggies' kick return unit.

The Gophers need to replace former All-America receiver Rashod Bateman, who left for the NFL draft. Their top returning receivers are junior Chris Autman-Bell, freshman Daniel Jackson, freshman Mike Brown-Stephens and seniors Seth Green and Clay Geary.

Also Wednesday, Val Martin, a defensive tackle from North Carolina State, announced he has committed to the Gophers as a graduate transfer.

The 6-2, 297-pound Martin has one year of eligibility remaining and made 29 tackles over his career for NC State.

Double-posting because I put it in the wrong thread...

A few weeks after he was honored was the 2020 Big Ten Running Back of the Year, the accolades keep coming in for Minnesota junior Mohamed Ibrahim. On Monday Ibrahim was named to the Associated Press All-American Team on the third team. He becomes the third Gopher to be named an AP All-American in the past two seasons after Antoine Winfield, Jr was named to the first team and Rashod Bateman was named to the third team in 2019. He is the first Minnesota running back to be named an AP All-American since Laurence Maroney in 2005.

Ibrahim had a great 2020 season putting up near record stats despite playing in just seven games. Mo led the Big Ten in rushing attempts (201), rushing yards (1,076), rushing yards per game (153.7), rushing touchdowns (15), scoring (90), points per game (12.9) and all-purpose yards per game (168.4), despite playing two less games than the majority of those below him in the statistical rankings. In just seven games Mo ranked amongst the best in the nation in several statistical categories— third in rushing yards per game, fourth in points per game, fifth in rushing touchdowns, sixth in all-purpose yards per game and eighth in total rushing yards.

Ibrahim broke or nearly broke several Minnesota rushing records in 2020. His rushing average of 153.7 yards per game is now tops all time in Gopher history and he tied the Minnesota record with four rushing touchdowns in a one game—and HE DID IT TWICE IN BACK TO BACK GAMES at Maryland and at Illinois. He has run for 100 yards or more in eight consecutive games dating back to the Outback Bowl vs Auburn on January 1st which is a school record. His 15 rushing touchdowns places him fourth in a single season behind Gary Russell’s 18 in 2005, Marion Barber III’s 17 in 2003 and Rodney Smith’s 16 in 2016, all in 12 or 13 games, not seven like Mo.

Took in a bit Tiki and Tierney during lunch. One topic they discussed was Fleck going pro. Both thought it was a year or 2 away but agreed. He'll get a shot.

No kidding?

He seems like the last guy they'd think would work. making the transition
Just something about his M.O. imo, just doesn't give off Pro vibe.
Oh well. So we either lose him, or give him a billion dollar extension. Argh.
We just can't have nice things.

They did wonder that he might be too 'rah-rah' to succeed but both said his energy is what GM's are looking for nowadays.

Former Gophers football coach Tracy Claeys announced Wednesday that he is leaving his post as linebackers coach at Virginia Tech and retiring from coaching.

But Claeys, who said he has lost 125 pounds, left himself an opening to return if a defensive coordinator opportunity arises.

Claeys, who turned 52 on Christmas Day, came to Minnesota as Jerry Kill's defensive coordinator in 2011 and took over as head coach when Kill resigned because of health reasons in 2015. Claeys went 11-8 as Gophers head coach but was fired in December 2016, following a sexual assault scandal involving several players.

Claeys went on to become the defensive coordinator at Washington State and spent last season as the linebackers coach at Virginia Tech.

"On behalf of our entire football program, I want to thank Tracy Claeys for his contributions to our team," Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said in a statement. "Even though he was only with us for a short time, Tracy made a lasting impact on our players and coaches. Tracy is not only an outstanding football coach, but he's also one of the finest people I've had the pleasure of working with in this profession."

Claeys thanked Fuente in the news release and said he'll always have a place in his heart for Virginia Tech.

In his Twitter announcement Claeys added: "I want to be clear that this announcement has nothing to do with health problems. Over the last 18 months I have lost 125 pounds and feel great. I still have the love and passion to coach the game and be involved in helping kids become young adults. I love the evaluation process in recruiting and building relationships with prospects, families and coaches. However, I want to spend some time with my family and friends back in KS and decide what is next.

Minnesota Football Recruiting: Three-star OL Saia Mapakaitolo commits to the Gophers

Ahead of the February Signing Day, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are not quite finished with their 2021 recruiting class. As they await a final decision from top-ranked commit Avante Dickerson, Arizona offensive tackle Saia Mapakaitolo has grabbed an oar.

Mapakaitolo played one season at Mission Hills (Calif.) Bishop Alemany as a high school junior to get more college football recruiting exposure. When he landed a scholarship offer from USC in January of last year, he committed to the Trojans in May and then opted to return to his home state of Arizona to spend his senior year at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, where most of his family resides. He decommitted and re-opened his recruitment in December.

Get to know Saia Mapakaitolo
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 280

Power 5 Scholarship Offers: Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State, UCLA, USC, Utah, and Washington State

247 Sports Composite Rating: .8763

247 Sports Scouting Report
Mapakaitolo is one of the region’s top offensive line prospects, capable of playing right or left tackle at the next level. He shows the athleticism and lateral mobility to play as a left tackle in college and has a lot of untapped potential.

Mapakaitolo has a prototype tackle frame and at 6-5, 280 pounds, looks lean and should have no problem filling out and adding good weight. He’s equally talented as a run blocker and pass protector and shows the physicality and toughness to be a multi-year starter at the college level.

Just when we thought things could not get any worse... Pj Fleck is reported to possibly going to Tennessee. (the U) The buyout is only 4 million and change.

Read one angle is that it could lessen the NCAA penalty on Tennessee, cuz Fleck's college coach is on the NCAA Infractions Committee.

If the call is there...go

Row that boat to Knoxville. They won't be happy with a good team every 3 or 4 years.

no rowing to Knoxville

New Tennessee athletic director Danny White didn't have to look far to land his head football coach. White named UCF's Josh Heupel as the Vols' next head coach on Wednesday.

White previously hired Heupel when White was the UCF athletic director.

"We looked at a number of potential candidates," White said in a statement. "Josh Heupel, who I had the privilege of working with for three years, is everything we were looking for: winning with integrity, a history of championships and the architect of explosive offenses. He is a players' coach and the kind of person the student-athletes go the extra mile for. I saw that first-hand, and you can see it in his coaching record."

It would be interesting to see what they would do with the image, since Goldy Gopher is actually a chipmunk.

Frankly I'd be surprised if it actually ended up being the mascot, but you never know.

The Gophers football program on Sunday received commitments from a trio of cornerbacks, a defensive end and a wide receiver in the recruiting Class of 2022.

The flurry of action began Sunday morning when cornerbacks are Aidan Gousby of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; Rhyland Kelly, a Winnipeg, Manitoba, native who played at Clearwater (Fla.) Academy International; and Tariq Watson, from Helen Cox High School in Harvey, La., announced via Twitter that they will join the Gophers football program.

Jack Pyburn, a three-star defensive end from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., announced his decision to commit to the Gophers at around noon. That was followed by Minnetonka wide receiver Cade Conzemius, whose father, Justin, was a Gophers linebacker from 1992-95, announced he was accepting a preferred walk-on offer from Minnesota.

All five made their official visits to coach P.J. Fleck and Minnesota this weekend.

Gousby (6-2, 185 pounds), Watson (5-10, 170) and Rhyland (6-2, 185) are rated as three-star recruits by 247Sports. In the 247Sports composite rankings of major recruiting services, Watson is the 72nd-ranked cornerback nationally, Gousby is 75th and Rhyland 108th.
