Since Daunte blew up his knee and later his career here, how many good QBs have we missed out on and what would have been the price to sign them?

First off, let me preface by saying that if Bard made better QB decisions his first year here we probably are not drafting #7 to get Peterson his second year.

Drew Brees - was considered an injury risk coming off shoulder surgery but was a free agent
Jay Cutler - may have needed to give up 2 #1s to get the job done
Brady Quinn - decent start but they had the training wheels on him; Peterson or Quinn?
Colt Brennan - unproven and appears to be too small?
Kurt Warner - would AZ have traded him to us in 2006?  I am shocked, I didn't think he had anything left in the tank.
Matt Schaub - we were outbid; not a favorite of mine
Byron Leftwich - this is an easy call; we were NUTS not to bring him in (wouldn't have cost us Peterson either)
Jeff Garcia - we missed out and now is probably too old
Joe Flacco - has yet to prove he is more worthy and Jared Allen
MAtt Ryan - would have had to have given up a Herschel at least to get him

Who am I missing?

********************************
Leftwich stands out to me.  I'm not a fan of his slow release, but he wouldn't be our second best QB, he'd be our best QB.

All we judge Spielman by is the things he did, somehow we ignore the things he should/could have done.

Pete, did you miss the article I posted awhile back that stated Spielman tried to bring in other QB's after Frerotte was signed but Childress wouldn't let him?

I wonder what Tom Brady will be like after he returns.  McNabb is about 90-95% of what he was.  Carson Palmer appears to be much less and Daunte much less than Carson.  Major knee surgeries appear to really limit QBs going forward.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3658987

Is it possible he never returns?

*****************************
McNabb's mobility was a big part of his game.  IMO, Palmer's injury isn't even an issue anymore, he just looked bad throwing the ball.

My guess is that Brady will come back pretty close to the same player that he was.  He was never quick, but he did move well IN the pocket.  I expect he'll be okay.

The past stud that makes me wonder is Big Ben.  He has become the stone statue.  He just refuses to get rid of the ball quickly.  His days are numbered IMO.
He reminds me a lot of Daunte.

Big, strong QB that throws a nice ball but takes way too many hits.  Both need to lose weight.

Brady is having a lot of problems in recovery.  His injury could end up being much more serious than first thought.

These fines for defensive players are ridiculous. I apologize if this has been covered, I have been away from the site, it just seems like every week, or day, some guy is getting fined huge dollars. $50,000 Allan? I was at the game, I did not notice the low hits, or see replays. The Tuck play on Bollinger is the lamest call for a fine and the fact that it was even a penalty is a joke to the highest ruin the game level.

Now Woodley gets fined 10K for Campbell hitting his head.

Is this all recoil from the Brady out for the season? Add the fact that there are only about 12 starting caliber quarterbacks for 32 teams and I think this is why you can't tackle them at all anymore.

Just found this:
Sat, Nov 8 ESPN.com reports the NFL has rescinded a $7,500 fine levied against New York Giants DL Justin Tuck for a hit on Dallas Cowboys QB Brooks Bollinger in Week 9. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell saw the play for the first time Friday, Nov. 7, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. Goodell then told Ray Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, that the fine was too high. "Not every penalty deserves a fine, and this is one of them," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

I don't like either, but I'd be okay with the fines rather than the stupid penalties, like the one on Tuck.

The owners are going to have a hard time getting a good contract with the Players association if they keep these stupid fines up. I hear a lot of retired QB's saying the flags that are thrown for hits on them are crazy

Matt Cassel is brutal.  He can't throw over 20 yards without the ball floating.  Moss was wide open for an easy 6 and had to stop and wait for the ball which was knocked away!

NFL Fines Randy Moss $20K
Mon Nov 10, 2008

The Boston Globe reports the NFL has fined New England Patriots WR Randy Moss $20,000 for comments he made regarding the officiating following the Patriots' 18-15 loss to the Colts last Sunday night. Moss wasn't talking after yesterday's win over the Bills, but chances are he's not too happy, considering his comments were fairly innocuous. In fact, Moss started his comments last week by saying, "This is one of those funny games where you really got to watch what you say because fines will be out on Wednesday, so I'll leave it at that." But he didn't leave it at that, answering another question with a response that included saying there were some "real iffy calls out there." "I think a lot of guys are really down just for the fact that you let a game like this slip," said Moss. "Like I said earlier, when things happen you got to watch what you say. Guys don't want to get fined. There were some real iffy calls out there, and it's just some of the things that you wished wouldn't have happened. Good calls and bad calls are part of the game, so you got to live and die with them." NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed it was the "iffy calls" characterization that drew the league's attention - and apparently ire.

Culpepper In & Out of Lions Game
Mon Nov 10, 2008

The Detroit Free Press reports Lions QB Daunte Culpepper, who came out of retirement for Sunday's game, began the first quarter with an incompletion and an interception. He ended the second quarter by banging into his running back. He got three snaps in the third quarter. And he sat for the fourth. Now, let's admit that Culpepper was, at times, impressive. For a man who hasn't taken an NFL snap, or an NFL hit, since last November, he not only looked in shape, he didn't fumble, he didn't take too long, and he uncorked one long bomb to Calvin Johnson that actually got your heart beating. Especially since I figure his huddle conversation consisted of three sentences: “What's your name again?” “OK, you be the bottle cap...” “Johnson, go long.” With QB Dan Orlovsky out, we also got our first look at backup QB Drew Stanton, once of Michigan State. Drew came in briefly and threw a one-yard touchdown. He also handled the fourth quarter. He finished with six completions and five sacks,

What bull

Who died and appointed them grand pubah?

They are so good that a player can't even say a call was "iffy".

Please

The double standards in this league are amazing

I still think Stanton needs to start for the Lions for the rest of the season so they can see what they have.

Unless they think Culpepper can do well for the rest of the season and then they can flip him in the offseason or something, I see no upside to having Culpepper start over Stanton for that team.

I disagree

I would give each 3 games to see what they can do.  Stanton is no more guaranteed than Culpepper.

But Stanton's your young, developed guy.  I don't see Culpepper as a longterm answer, personally.  So you may as well see if you have an longterm answer on the roster.

JMO.

That's where I stand too. I don't see the Lions mattering any time soon, so I'm not sure what a QB on the wrong side of 30 provides.

I would use Culpepper as my "relief pitcher" in games Stanton struggles, but they need to play Drew enough to see if he's the guy or if they need to still find him.

Jeff George Still Looking for NFL Gig
Mon Nov 10, 2008

SI.com's Peter King reports former Oakland Raiders QB Jeff George is still hoping to catch on with an NFL team this season. "I find it hard to believe there isn't a place in the game for me. My arm feels like I'm 25," said George. "I'm not asking to be a starter, I just want a spot on a team." George turns 42 in December.

God help us ....
Theres another one coming.
John Maddens bus was seen heading that direction.

Bay Saint Louis (Miss.) St. Stanislaus quarterback Dylan Favre, as he usually does on game day, received a text message from his famous uncle - superstar NFL signal-caller Brett Favre - the afternoon of his team's Oct. 31 regular-season finale.
"Good luck and do what you do," it read.
A few hours later, Dylan Favre etched his name into the record books by completing 23 of 35 passes for 358 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-27 Rock-A-Chaws win over Poplarville.
A 31-yard, fourth-quarter scoring strike to James Abraham gave Favre 43 TD passes this fall, which set the state's single-season record, surpassing the mark of 42 by North Panola's Clifton Davis III in 1990.
Many quarterbacks would have been thrilled by the achievement. While Favre, a two-year starter, was happy, his focus last week was not on the record but on an opening-round playoff game against Brookhaven.
"You know," the easy-going Favre said in his Southern drawl, "I haven't really thought about it that much. I told my dad the other day I'm not as excited about it as I thought I'd be."
Perhaps Favre feels that way because he knows bigger things may be in store down the road. According to most accounts, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound junior has the game to go along with the name.
"He's a pretty special athlete," St. Stanislaus coach Forrest Williams said.
Several colleges already have taken notice.
Williams does not believe Favre has any scholarship offers yet, but he said major college programs such as Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Southern Miss (where Brett and his father, Jeff Favre, played) and UCLA are among the schools that have written letters of interest.
"Somebody is going to get a heck of a quarterback," Williams said. "He definitely has touch. He's very mobile in the pocket. We can move the pocket or he can sit in the pocket and make any of the throws he wants to. He has a great arm, a good release, a lot of touch and good vision."
Sound familiar?
Much like his uncle, Favre is the type of player who can hurt an opponent with either his arm or his legs. And he also has tremendous improvisational skills. In last week's 42-27 first-round Class 4A playoff loss to Brookhaven, Favre passed for two touchdowns (giving him 45 for the season and 81 for his career) and ran for another - his eighth rushing score in 2008.

Dylan Favre is only a junior, but he is already hearing from several of the top programs in the country."He's athletic, and he's a competitor," Rivals.com Southeast Recruiting Analyst Barton Simmons said. "You can see a lot of his uncle in him in the way he improvises and the confidence he has in his arm."
For the record, Favre is no prima donna quarterback. When he's not taking snaps and completing passes, he's making hits as the Rock-A-Chaws' starting free safety.
"He just has a nose for the ball," Williams said. "On offense or defense, he wants to be around it. He takes a licking and keeps on ticking. And he'll stick you."
Favre also is an intelligent player, Williams said. The coach routinely allows him to change plays on his own at the line of scrimmage.
"He's probably the top player I've been around that understands the game," Williams said. "He's very game-savvy. (Dylan and Brett) are similar-type players, in terms of toughness and personality."
Because of his last name, comparisons to his uncle follow Favre around the clock. Few newspaper articles are written without mentioning Favre's bloodlines (his father, like Brett, played quarterback at Hancock North Central under their father, the late Irvin Favre). And the opposition usually is hungry to "knock me out," the low-key Favre said.
"Expectations," he said, "are high."
Thus far, though, Favre seems to have managed them rather well. And to his credit, he has remained modest and team-oriented.
"He knows where he comes from, and he's not affected by that," Williams said. "He's a pretty fun guy with a great sense of humor. He's always good with a joke, and his teammates like being around him. We don't treat him any differently than the other players. We get on him just like everyone else."
For that matter, so do Brett and his father.
"Be humble and work hard ... my dad and uncle are always on me about that," Favre said.
