I don't know how this go but I would like some opinions on how this thing is playing out. I'm moderating this thread so please let's keep it civil. I read the Fanhouse blogs all the time on this case and something has been really bugging me. Why does the African American community get so up in arms with the hatred that is coming Vick's way? Personally I wouldn't care if this was Tom Brady, I would hate it just as much. Yes if it was a nobody I would probably have moved on to the next special interest story by now, but it's not. It involves one of the NFL's icons and he just happens to be black. Short of using the N word, what slam on Vick isn't justified if you truly believe that he is involved in this? IMO the only thing that is driving the race issue is the African Americans who use something like this to promote their own prejudices. I do realize that bigots will use anything they can to put down a black person so I want to separate that form my line of thinking. Forget the color, I have issues with the person. Why can't it just be that and nothing else?

Good job by the Feds. Still a lot of questions. His cousin not charged? More charges than;conspiracy to traffic in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District in Richmond, V This is good though. Restores a little faith.

Here you go.
quote:

JULY 17--NFL star Michael Vick was indicted today on a federal conspiracy charge for his alleged role in a dog fighting venture that operated from a Virginia property owned by the Atlanta Falcons quarterback. A copy of the indictment, filed today in U.S. District Court in Richmond, can be found below. The 27-year-old Vick, whose nickname is listed as "Ookie" in the indictment, allegedly established the Bad Newz Kennels in early 2001 in Smithfield, Virginia. It was this property, for which Vick paid $34,000, that the star athlete and his codefendants used as the "main staging area for housing and training the pit bulls involved in the dog fighting venture and hosting dog fights." According to prosecutors, Vick and his cohorts began purchasing pit bull puppies in late 2001and would eventually "sponsor" individual dog fights with purses as high as $26,000. In the most harrowing parts of the indictment, federal investigators describe what happened to some Bad Newz Kennels dogs that either lost matches or did not perform well in test fights. After a March 2003 loss by a female pit bull, codefendant Purnell Peace, "after consulting with Vick," electrocuted the animal. In April, prosecutors allege, Vick, Peace, and Quanis Phillips, "executed approximately 8 dogs thatr did not perform well in 'testing' sessions." These animals, the indictment charges, were killed "by various methods, including hanging, drowning, and slamming at least one dog's body to the ground."

Here's one part: In or about March 2003, Peace, after conslting with Vick about the losing female Pit Bull's condition, executed the dog by wetting the dog down with water and eloctrocuting the animal.

Hell of a guy that Vick. I want a suspension ASAP. I want people to take a stand on national TV and say how deplorable a person he is. Nice NFLN leading off with it.

Well Jamie Dukes still basically standing by Vick. Said stuff like he's not really catching that people are really outraged by the whole dog fighting thing. That there's no reason not to still follow him as a leader because he lays it all on the line each week. Not a big Jamie Dukes fan. It's just his place and he's only been indicted by a Federal grand jury. I want to see outrage not apologists

http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/07/17/nfl-on-michael-vick-we-are-disappointed-guilt-has-not-yet/ NFL on Michael Vick: 'We Are Disappointed ... Guilt Has Not Yet Been Proven'
quote:

The NFL has issued a statement on the indictment of Falcons quarterback Michael Vick on conspiracy charges relating to a dog fighting operation that was allegedly operated on property he owns: We are disappointed that Michael Vick has put himself in a position where a federal grand jury has returned an indictment against him. We will continue to closely monitor developments in this case, and to cooperate with law enforcement authorities. The activities alleged are cruel, degrading and illegal. Michael Vick's guilt has not yet been proven, and we believe that all concerned should allow the legal process to determine the facts. The matter will be reviewed under the league's Personal Conduct Policy. The statement that Vick's guilt hasn't been proven (not to mention the curious use of the word "yet") is noteworthy because NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has indicated with his suspensions of Titans cornerback Pacman Jones, Bengals receiver Chris Henry and former Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson that he doesn't feel the need to wait until the legal system runs its course before issuing suspensions. Will he react to the Vick case differently?

I did kind of generalize that too much. Sorry. I'll be blunt. I don't understand when I read or hear black people getting up in arms when a white person takes issue with what a black person is doing. More importantly to this magnitude. They make it sound ke you're racist if you think he is a scum bag. Did you watch Jamie Dukes on NFL network? Did you not think he came accross as a total Vick apologist? When Moss fake mooned or bumped a traffic cop I don't remember the talking heads being afraid to slam him as a person and a player. Jamie Dukes only wanted to point out what good Vick has done, and how much effort he put on the field. Where's the indignation? Vick wasn't just randomly swept up in a situation like Ray Lewis was. When the story first came out I could see being cautious with ones comments but not after reading the 18 page indictment.
