Martz Set to Leave Lions
Wed Dec 26, 2007

Mlive.com reports no one is sure how it's actually going to happen, but it appears Detroit Lions OC Mike Martz will not return next season. While it isn't a done deal yet and there's always the chance for 11th-hour developments, the most likely scenario is that Martz will resign or retire once the season is over. Martz had high expectations when he took the job two years ago, but things didn't pan out like he had envisioned. Martz believed he could install another version of the "Greatest Show on Turf'' in Detroit, but it didn't happen for a variety of reasons and Martz now realizes it was the wrong time and wrong place to try it.

4 WRs picked in the top ten, 2 first round RBs on the roster. When and where is the right time and right place?

The Rams were the dregs of the NFL in the 1990's, and by 1999 had stockpiled all the talent needed for a SB run thanx in large part to a decade of drafting top 5-10 year in and year out.

Similarly the Lions have been the dregs of the NFL for about the last decade, but thanx in large part to a decade of drafting top 5-10 year in and year out... Oh that's right, they still suck. Can you say Matt Millen...

Jon Kitna thinks the Lions can get to 10 wins? Bet the house against it
DREW SHARP
March 16, 2008

Jon Kitna is at it again.

The Lions' quarterback once again set the standard for their 2008 season as 10 wins or bust.
Here's a tip: Bet your mortgage on "bust."

Kitna didn't make a prediction, referring to it rather as a statement of fact. He would be disappointed if the Lions don't win 10 games with the -- ahem -- improvements they've made in coaching and player personnel.
Is the man a masochist?

Kitna must be counting on divine intervention because it's impossible realistically suggesting the Lions are improved, especially following a tumultuous two weeks.

They axed Kevin Jones because he couldn't stay healthy and Kalimba Edwards because he couldn't play.
But these moves only reinforced the Lions' flawed basic operating strategy -- more reactive than proactive, creating more holes without having any clue as to how to fill them.

If you're keeping score, the departure of Jones and Edwards means there are now only four players remaining from the 12 Matt Millen drafted in the first two rounds in his first five drafts from 2001-05 -- Jeff Backus, Dominic Raiola, Roy Williams and Shaun Cody.

How can Kitna honestly spin such nonsense and maintain a straight face?

Tatum Bell is only an improvement over Jones because he has two fully functioning lower limbs. He's not a game-changer.

The Lions are in worse shape now because any chance at success next season is predicated on Millen striking gold with each of his draft picks next month.

The Lions are so badly depleted from the standpoint of quality veterans because of blown high draft picks that they would need comparable contributions from every rookie merely to have a chance at 8-8.

Do you need another reminder of Millen's draft record?

If he has difficulty culling two guys capable of a decent NFL career from any one draft, then how can anybody logically believe that he could find six or seven next month?

Keep dreaming, Kitna.

I love Kimmell's show.  "It jukes the fat"

Did you see the joke that his girl played on him about Matt Damon?  That is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Calvin Johnson Took Meds to Get Through Last Season
    Sun Apr 20, 2008

Mlive.com reports Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson never got healthy after suffering a deep bone bruise in his lower back in the third game of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles. Johnson continued to play most of the games, but was nowhere near full strength. "I was on meds the rest of the season. I was taking Vicodin twice a game just to get through the game," Johnson said. "I stayed hurt the whole season, probably because I was trying to come back too soon. But I'm not going to be the kind of guy who's going to say, 'I can't do this or this because I'm hurt.' " Johnson said he still feels some discomfort from the injury, but Bellamy said Johnson will be 100 percent by training camp. "I had almost 800 yards last year and I'm not saying I could double that, but I can put up 1,200 yards." Johnson said. "I did that in college in 14 games. I expect the highest out of myself, and I put big numbers in front of myself as goals. I'll get 1,000 yards, no doubt."

Someone just sent me this video today and it reminded me how much I enjoyed watching Barry play.  He is the one divisional opponent that I do miss watching from a talent appreciation standpoint.

Man, It's like he KNEW which way the players were gonna lean, what angle they were trying to take and what foot all thier weight was on, then he would juke or fake just enough to get therm off balance and break the attempted tackle like it was a pee wee player trying to bring down a car..

His ability to change direction on a dime and a toe plant was phenominal..

I hated watching the Vikes try to tackle him.. he made fools of everyone.

Emmitt Smith is a hack compared to Barry Sanders, considering the Lion's teams Barry had to play on.

Agreed, what a waste of talent and a career to be stuck in Detroit.

So what is the over/under on wins for Detroit in 2008? Jon Kitna aside, I will go with 5. The won't win a division game, that is 0-6, that leaves them with 5-5 for the their other 10, maybe the number is 4. As much as I don't respect the Bears playoff chances, Bears have improved by virtue of health, Vikings with additions,Packers won't fall off the map enough to keep the kitties in a game. I don't see Detroit beating anybody. They simply have not improved and everyone else has.

Lions Mum on Culpepper
Thu Oct 30, 2008

The Detroit Free Press reports the Lions were quiet Wednesday concerning free-agent QB Daunte Culpepper. HC Rod Marinelli said Culpepper "moved around good" during his workout Tuesday. But he would not discuss how Culpepper might fit and was vague about the Lions' reasons for looking at him. "We don't know where we're at with it right now," Marinelli said. "But it's a very good, veteran football player that's been a very good player in this league, and he's young."

So he blew off Kansas City before he even signed a contract with the Lions?   This could end up bad for Daunte.

Daunte is just plain stupid.

Any career issues are self-inflicted.

I don't blame him one bit for dissing KC. Unless he's desperate for money, why in the hell would he want to play there?

Because if you get a reputation for bad-mouthing teams, your chances of getting hired by ANY teams slips just a bit.

Say he doesn't end up with a contract in Detroit.   That KC job might appear a little more attractive - at least as a way to get back into the league.   One job can lead to another, but if you burn the bridge, it leads nowhere.

Is Culpepper’s agent (himself) messing things up?

The Lions didn’t reveal much today about their plans with Daunte Culpepper. That’s probably because Daunte insists on representing himself, which means he’s probably in the process of asking for a lot more than he should, which in turn could end up meaning he won’t be back where he belongs — in the NFL.
That’s a shame, too. Lions coach Rod Marinelli said Culpepper looked good in his workout on Tuesday.
Sounds to me like Daunte The Player needs deserves better than Daunte The Agent.
